Alright, here's the scenario: I kill a unit that is comprised of an Independent Character and a squad that he has joined. Do I gain a pain token for both the Independent Character AND the squad that he joined, or just one for the whole blob?

One for the whole blob. Covered in the "share the pain" area. If your IC leaves the unit, you have to choose who gets the token.

I would say you get 2 pain tokens, as when resolving attacks the IC is treated as a separate unit.

I think it was covered in the FAQ, as nos said, its 2 tokens

It just makes sense for it to be two tokens - granted the uint is joined, but they are seperate codex units, so they are surely 1 KP each anyway.

Note that this reads as though characters in retinues would not give up a token unless their retinue was already dead.
