I haven't seen one of these threads in a while, but they're fantastic to get some inspiration from. I love hearing about people's crazy ideas for themed, counts-as or those ideal armies they would like to one day build but haven't got the time/energy/money for. I'll start off with some of mine:

- Entire footslogging Imperial Guard regiment of Praetorians, kitbashing Cadians with these
- Or, for that matter, a footslogging IG army with Beastmen militia like the old Rogue Trader days. Using a healthy mix of Cadians, Gors and Catachans. Minotaurs as Ogryns! Ungors as Conscripts! Lots of horde blobs, with Priests and Commissars overseeing the cannon fodder.
- Adeptus Arbites mechanised force, using SM Scout legs and Cadians. Penal legion squads to support, convert Chimeras into modern-style APC's.

- Kroot Mercenary army using Codex: Dark Eldar. It actually fits pretty well with a limited unit selection. Kabalite Warriors, Scourges, Grotesques, Khymerae, Raiders and Haemonculi are Kroot Carnivores, Vultures, Krootox, Kroot Hounds, War Skiffs (think: Jabba the Hut barge) and Kroot Shamans respectively, etc. Poison splinter weapons explain themselves ("Kroot Rifles, Kroot Carbines"?), plus Kroot Mercs are known for using other races wargear so a few Blasters can be justified. The Kroot habit of feasting from the dead to harvest new genetic code explains Power Through Pain.

- Heresy-era Night Lords army using Codex: Blood Angels, full DoA jump-pack force.

So, what about the rest of you?

I've always wanted to do an Imperial Guard army made up of Blood Axes orks trying to emulate the Imperial ways of war. It would be pretty easy to ork up any IG armor or artillery with the application of plastic plating and rivets all over it. I'd also include some boar boy rough riders. Maybe some grot snipers. Kans could stand in for sentinels. Or sentinels could be modelled with grots inside and hanging all over the outside. I can just imagine how cool an orky baneblade would look.

Well I've been considering the kroot idea that you mentioned, I have all the models, I just don't know whether people would be ok with it.

Another idea i've had for a long time is an elite non imperial human army counting as SM. Thinking about adding armoured heads and elbow and knee pads to IG to make them more armoured. Also adding in lots of bionics and stimulant injects. Main problem with this is finding the right bits.

I've actually almost finished my Traitor Guard Army! Full of plenty of nasty stuff and spikey bits (just like any self respecting chaos force should be!). All i need now is another Punisher, Chimera and a Stormlord Super Heavy Tank! oh so pretty!!! ^_^

I always liked the idea of an imperial army (Steel Legion or Valhalla) with tooooons of footslogging soldiers and a most importantly a ****load of recruits with send the next wave
Assaulting an enemy squad with 50 soldiers and then next turn just sending in another wave of 50 must be fun :3

An Elysian Air Cav army could also be awesome, just valks/vens with veterans that look awesome :p... or an imperial tank company with max LR... IG is just so awesome^^

I'm musing on Pre heresy Imperial robots, based around the Ork codex.

I'm casting a few of my own robots for other projects (bit steam punkish) and think I can scratch-build some others to give be a nice variant army.

I'm going to do Chaos Kroot with the dark eldar codex too. That's my next plan. Lots of voodoo, savagery, sacrifice, with cut down unit choice you could make a great counts as.

I think a guerilla stealth force of elite light infantry would be cool. It would have loads of sniper rifles, demo charges and assasin style characters. Shame Imperial guard codex doesn't quite work atm.

yeah every Army i have ever done has been themed,
I made a all infantry airborne Guard force back in 4th ed days that was modeled after the British Red Devils from WW2
Also made a german styled Steel legion army, along with a Armor Co. to match.

A Roman legion styled spacemarine army in reds/whites and golds, with termi's in black purple and gold, kinda like pretorian guard, even had assault squads with Scutums ( roman Shields)

A Huge ork army with a overall WW2 theme american/british/german/russian etc, very blood axe.

Now my Modern military inspired Tau

and my next one is likely to be a very modern IG army to act as a Tau Auxillary equiped with wheeled vehicles and a large airmobile force, possibly with a modern Russian look to them.

But Yeah theme for me is everything, its what gets me inspired to build/paint and play this game.

I'd like to make an army full of Japanese models. I don't care which faction or what models (old Mishima sound good), just so long as they are obviously Japanese. I also need tanks and one "secret weapon" type of device. It has to be HUGE and b movie-like.

I don't want to play with this army. I just want to stomp on them. In urban terrain, naturally. Then beat up Godzilla...

lets see...

I did some work converting terminators into thousand sons terminators to run as my obliterators, so thats just thousand sons pushed to limits.

Another I'd like to do is something between praetorian guard and mordian iron guard... Old hungarian stye hussars.

when wargames factory gets its crap together, it might be tempting to pick up some more of their scifi infantry and build an Ironclad Traitor guard army, it'd actually be really easy.

I have an idea for a "Sweet Tooth's Carnival of Carnage" marine (or Ork) all biker/vehicle mounted army, or a Marine army based almost exactly around the Hells Angels.

really those would be my more fleshed out ideas lately.

a few others but I can't think of them right now

Still tempted to do a bretonian themed O&G army

Core units - Wolf riders with full barding sculped.
Special - Boar boyz with full barding sculpted.
You see where this is going right?

Idea was simply to mimic the bretonian style through an army that could pull it off.

Warriors of chaos was my 2nd choice for doing this.
However, marauder horsemen suck balls, so no.

Soviet IG....have always wanted to do it, and I will eventually. I am just torn over whether to do Codex Steel Legion, or start on my Soviet IG using them.

Exactly. Especially given how the DA sprue is still (relatively) cheap for what you get out of it. The CSM battle force isnt too shabby either, and support can come in the form of a Ravenwing squadron. However I dont have the time, money, or attention span to do it =x.

I've been thinking of making a CSM force dedicated to Malal, using lots of berserker skull heads minus bunny ears, and using Daemonhunters rules. Also thinking of doing an all Gue'vesa Tau army.

I thought the same thing (time, money, attention), but after I finished my intial SW army, it was too bad. I think the 1000 Pts. Vanilla/Chaos Fallen Angels army ran me about $100 to make. Not too shabby, even though there were some AoBR bits, but all robed marines!

I had a discussion a while back concerning how to incorporate Cypher into the force, as he is pretty much manditory for any fallen army (if memory serves, he attracts alot of fallen to his side for some reason).

Er...can I post if I have started but not finished?

I've got a Napoleonic IG army on the boil and doing well.
I've got some Napoleonic Arbites for Necromunda

I've been failing to produce spectacular work for my 40k SM Sigmar Army...
I've have, but have lost, 2 squads of RT Beastmen which I would have included....
I've ordered 3 boxes of Wargames Factory British Line to make into Praetorian (but they may never show up) and I've used all my spare lasguns up for the Napoleonics...

I have a halfling army failing to be painted.

Um. When I am done with everything?

I'd like to do a Confederate IG army (based on Starbuck Chronicles) and a Black Company Mercenary Army for WFB (aka Empire army based on the Black Company).....

I'd also like to have some Jokearo knocking around...and I have a cunning plan of how to do it cheaply!

Saw your avatar, did a double take since I used to rock my Boreale all around the place.

I had an idea a while ago for a Squat army using scout Marine rules. Lots of scout bikers and average scouts for the Squat bikers and infantry, then exo-suit Squats as Sternguard with Pedro Kantor counts-as. Would be a pretty standard drop pod Sternguard list using termites instead of drop pod models. Thudd guns (Thunderfire cannons) in the heavy support slots, naturally.
