Hello all, this is my frst post (not including Introduction) and I thought you fellow Warhammer 40k players could help me with a certain thing.
When I first started getting into Warhammer, I immediately thought, "These Chaos guys are pretty awesome" , but then after some time, I stumbled onto DE. Both were insanely cool-looking. Both were evil. Both were spiky!
Now, why I would chose DE is because of their fast mobility, their stealth-kind-of background (I'm addicted to steath) and their co-ordination and tactiics.
Chaos, however, has a muuch bigger storyline, the whole demon--summoning is awesome, they are more satisfying on the board, and they are a bit more popular, making them more common in the PC and console games.
If someone can contradict, and add some cool points to both of them I would greatly appreciiate it!
Thanks

P.S. Added the poll, so I can see properly for how many people go for what.

Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong Dakka section of the forums.

Better models and newer codex.

Chaos ftw!! So much choice of units, gods, everything! Even if they do have an older codex and models, it means they'll get re-done sooner!

I collect both, this desicion is killing me D:

Seriously both are pretty cool, when you get past the "in-your-face-evil 'n' spikes" and get down to the hypocrisy and self-loathing layered into the fluff.

DE are probably the most evil and depraved, but Chaos has something hoary, mystical, and otherworldy to it. Probably has something to do with commanding reality shattering ruinous powers...

Chaos has more variety, at least in the fluff. Try to compare the close combat oriented marines like the World Eaters with the Iron Warriors who are almost obsessed with long range firepower. The background is awesome and you have nice options for creating the fluff for your own warband and for customising your models. As for the rules, a new codex is bound to appear at some point. I'm not the best person to give that kind of advice since I don't play table top.

I voted Chaos, purely because they are more forgiving as a first army. I play both and really llike my DE, but I think I'd have had a hard time getting into the game as much as I am now if I'd started off with an army where a single mistake can ruin your game.

I voted CSM, I've always liked their back story and their own legions devoted to the different chaos gods.
The CSM minis are very fun to convert and the spurs are very interchangeable (at least zerkers CSM and possessed)
Another thing about CSM you can make many differnet army backgrounds from Alpha Legion who are still loyal to the Emperor or 1k Sons the ones that tried to help the Emperor but where betrayed, or being space pirates.

I voted chaos but then that's just me.

DE - the models and codex are newer and will therefore last longer before they need an update. They are also (in theory) more competative due to their new-ness. the fact that they are new also means the base models look nice than the current chaos models.

Chaos - tougher models (in game stat terms), near-infinite conversion possibilities, more options for god-specific armies if you're into that thing. Summoned Deamons (even though they blow). more fluff to work with.

I would also think that DE will be harder to paint what with the figures being a lot more petite than chunky marines. Theres also the risk with Chaos that if you start an army now, they might get an update in a couple of years rendering you oh-so-carefully crafted army obsolete.

I think that Chaos will be an easier starter army due to ease of painting and also plenty of other players to draw advice and tactics from, but DE will probably be better in the long term (plsu with them being more rare you will stand out more on the table).

It also depend son what tactics you migth prefer to use. As someone above stated, with DE you coudl field an army full of jetbikes and sky-boarders, chaos would struggle to keep up with an army like that.......but chaos is generally speaking a tougher army which will be able to absorb more damage as they work their way across the table.

Sorry about the rambling reply.

If you;

1) Don't care about the learning curve.

2) Like both armies because they are Spiky.

Then you need to just pick the army that just appeals to your better in terms of fluff/feel.

CSM are my most recent project and I choose them for the conversion possibilities (especially given outdated models like the Dreadnaught). Something to consider, if you're looking for a fast army then you can always come up with a bike and raptor heavy force. According to the fluff (if I recall correctly), the Night Lords fielded a lot of both.

DE. Same amount of conversion possibilties as Chaos (Wracks basically fills the mutant side of CSM conversions, so does Grotesques, and they have basically the same styled trophy racks), and the army list is so much more together than CSM, plus it's also alot fluffier than CSM (I dont care what people say, Khorne Havocs DO NOT EXIST! Neither does a Thousand Son who isnt a Sorc or a handful of dust).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

DE. I play both actually, but DE, by a hair.

Better codex, better models, better balance overall.

Chaos has a boring codex, ugly models (sorry chaos, I <3 you) and total over reliance on like three units (Princes, Plague Marines and Obliterators). I love chaos, I really do, but it's just horrible. Fun to play though.

IMO, the basic CSM only look good on the box. I really don't like the models at all. It's a good kit though. Unfortunatelt, I can't imagine GW changing them any time in the next twenty years or so
