Hello all. I posted this awhile back on the official forums, but I thought I'd copy & paste it here. Sharing is caring, right?
This is a table I made for my FLGS, Art of War Gaming and Miniatures in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Below you will find FARRRRR too many pictures with some added commentary.
So, without further ado: Welcome to the Acme Semiconductor Testing Facility!
The line for the tour starts here:
--------------------------------------------------------
Tour guide: Greetings everyone and welcome to the Acme Semiconductor Testing Facility. You all have the necessary security clearance to view the construction images of this facility, but I must remind you that any reproductions of any of this material or the sharing of any information contained within by any other means is strictly prohibited by Acme Semiconductor Inc.
Tour guide: Here we see the main floor under construction:
Tour guide: As you can see below, construction of the mainframe is well under way and running smoothly.
(the levers on the left were made from straight pins.)
(the raised domes are rolled greenstuff, cut in half)
(the toggles on the right are small slices of wood dowel rod with the ends of straight pins stuck in them)
Tour guide: As is the "Ultra-Dubious Secret Weapon™".
Tour guide: Here is the "Ultra-Dubious Secret Weapon™" and the mainframe console in place, but not yet operational.
Tour guide: Here are just a few of the machines that will occupy the main floor of the lab. These machines will be perform a myriad of duties, from the mundane to the highly complex. Everything that is being built in and for this facility is highly secret. Everything is built on site by the top Acme Semiconductor Inc. scientists.
Tour guide: Any construction tasks that Acme Semiconductor Inc. is not equipped to do are outsourced to expendable contractors. Upon completion of their specific task(s), the contractors are memory scrubbed.
Tour guide: Every machine on the main floor is powered in part by a large electro-magnet. The details are classified so I cannot discuss them with you at this time.
(every one of the machines on this table, with the exception of the mainframe, secret weapon, and scaffolding are magnetized so they can be thrown by supremes.)
Tour guide: These next two images were taken from balconies high above the main floor to demonstrate the magnitude of this facility.
Tour guide: Here you can see the fully-operational mainframe console.
(every dial on every machine was made by slicing a thin disk off of a 3-16th inch dowel rod and gluing a tiny posterboard triangle to it.)
Tour guide: As well as the "Ultra-Dubious Secret Weapon™". For obvious reasons, it is currently powered down.
Tour guide: More shots of the various proprietary electro-magnets.
(in these pics, you can see some of the wiring that is "connected" to the machines. The wiring is positioned and super-glued to the floor so that the ends touch the machines and appear to be connected.)
Tour guide: Fully-operational testing Acme Semiconductor Testing Facility main floor laboratory. To protect the anonymity of our scientists and other lab personnel, the floor is empty for these photos.
(these four are to show the walls of this table. The first two are one wall, the second two, the other.)
There you go. Hope you enjoy. If you happen to be in southwestern Ohio and can get to Cincinnati, I'd love to meet up for a game!
Any questions or comments would be lovely!

there is so much of all the things i want...i will need to refer to this thread a lot in the next time as i think your project here is somewhat like a ground work for doing interior designs for tabletop games...whoa i am deeply impressed!
one minor point to discuss for me would be the riveting of the floor... you only did it in very small amount... as i am currently designing a base for indoor characters i would greatly like to hear your thoughts as to why you only did a fiew of them on your floor...
best regards and be very proud of this tremendoulsy beatiful work!

My reasons are very simple. This table is so busy, so much detail everywhere, I wanted the floor to just be a 'behind the scenes' enhancement. I wanted the viewer/player to think, "This is a metal floor made up of huge sheets of metal" but I wanted it to be in the back of their minds while they are really looking at the machines. I felt that if I added more riveted points, it was make the floor more of a distraction.
What I really wanted people to focus on is the detail of the machines and the overall 'feel' of the table. I want people to look at it and, ESPECIALLY the people gaming on it, to sort feel like they're submerged in a campy, cliche comic book.

Nice guided tour, too!
Fortunately, they do. I've been hanging with this crew of owners and patrons for over a decade, though 2 different stores, and 4 different locations. I've been making them terrain this whole time. The thing I really love now is that there are a couple of really talented terrain makers who make stuff for the store, too. The Thurs. night Malifaux crew have been ridiculously cranking out nice terrain for their leagues. I feel really lucky to be a part of this group of people, this store and it's history.
You should see our Apocalypse tables...

Fantastic job Gidorah. All the little details like dials and wires are amazing. Do you have more work to do on it? I kinda like the ink outlines on the walls and floors as they are to keep the comic book feel.
Ever play Champions Online? It seems like a good match with the campy "super-computer that goes bleep-bloop" setup you've created.
Any chance of you posting pics of the Malifaux terrain? I'm just starting the game and would love to see what you guys do for terrain.

I did have a few more things I wanted to do to it. For example, the circular pattern on the floor that has 2 machines and a small control panel was meant to have a large, clear cylinder that was like a stasis chamber for a test subject. You know, the stereotypical vat of green liquid with a naked(ish) humanoid floating in stasis with small tubes/cables stick out. Thing is, by the time I got to what you see now, I was pretty ready for the project to be just plain over with. I scratch-built the entire thing, so I was pretty burnt on it.
"Super-computer that goes bleep-bloop" is a brilliant description of this table. I laughed like hell at that comment. It fits PERFECTLY with what I was going for.
As for the Malifaux terrain, it was made by the Malifaux league players. The organizers built a mechanic into the rules that awarded bonuses to players for every terrain piece of 6"x6" that they made and donated to the store. It was truly awesome to see so many people who had never made terrain step up and make things. Most of them are REALLY nice. The majority of the players came from the Star Wars Miniatures crew, which was a pre-painted game. Most had never owned any other sort of mini in their lives, let alone make terrain. I'll get pics the next time I'm at the store.

Here are the first 3 tables I did for the store. They are all 3' x 2' (like the lab) and I made them with more of a realistic feel. If you want to play bigger battles, they all fit together to form a coherent scene. Here's a far shorter WIP of all three tables:
Table #1 - the beachfront w/ Boardwalk (loosely based on my previous South Jersey home):
scratch-built balsa wood canoe
On the boardwalk, you can see the store front of Acme Golf (the next table in the series)
Table #2 - Acme Mini Golf table:
Table #3 - Acme Golf parking lot:
Later today, I'll post some pics of the combined tables to show the whole continuous scene. I'm at work right now and they aren't online yet.

wow. This is the best example of game table pr0n I've ever seen. Those tables are absolutely amazing. Every detail is clean, sharp and perfectly executed. That beach is brilliant.
I just keep finding new things to squeal at like a school girl; the phone and drink machine, the foam in the water, the canoe....
Y'know, I used to think all you had going for you was a seething hatred of Godzilla and great taste in signature animated gifs. I may have to reconsider my opinion.
