Subject: Highlighting Black - Pants/cloaks/etc [Video]
Here is another table top tutorial on how I highlight black pants and things. I know there are other ways to do it, this is just my way. It's quick, easy and effective.
Comments here or on youtube is appreciated!

Really liking your tutorials... the highlighting trousers will work very well on my Templar neophyites....
Haven't mastered the hammer one you did a while back but I'm working on it....
Great job.

I've been doing it this way for years. One thing you guys might want to experiment with is instead of greys, use blues. I'm not saying "don't use grey, use blue", I'm saying experiment with blues because the end result is a little different and will look good on certain models. Some models will look better with greys. For example, using the technique in the video using a medium blue and going easy on the highlighting you can get a 'black leather' effect by substituting black ink for Badab Black wash.
The Emperor loves me,
This I know,
For the Codex
Tells me so....
To echo the "use blues" comment, I sort of paint my blacks like that, but instead of the Codex Gray layer, I use Shadow Gray, which is bluish.
"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

However for a more "natural" highlight I would suggest using less extreme colors. Vallejo has an awesome color called "black grey" that is just perfect for the first HL color.
Ofc you could also try mixing something similar yourself.
Nice tutorial, but I have a question that is... not exactly on topic that you might be able to answer for me.
Why do people that post on YouTube always whore out that "don't forget to subscribe" plea? I mean. not saying YOU'RE whoring it out, per se, but so many people push the crap out that. What's the point? Is it a pissing contest like the most friends on Facebook?
I've always wondered why it matters. If you want to see examples of 'subscribe whoring' (again NOT THE OP), just watch any of the "FAIL TOY" videos.
Sorry for offending you by asking people to subscribe.
There are a few reasons that I personally post it, I am not answering for anyone else but me.
1.) It takes a TON of time to record, edit, render and upload a video that is done somewhat half decent. If no-one sees it, what is the point? Why would I waste my effort in trying to share the techniques that I have learned if only 3 people actually know it's on youtube. If they are subbed, you will see it right away and have the option to watch it or not. But at least if you are into wargaming, and the channel remains true to content, you will see more of the same.
2.) Many times I have been contacted either on forums or on youtube for me to show a certain technique. Most often a technique that I have already put a tutorial or video out there on. If the person is subbed, I have found that people actually surf through the vids and avoid the whole waste of time of contacting me for a technique already covered.
3.) A ton of effort is put into many videos. It is kinda rewarding when people watch them, more rewarding when people comment thanking me for taking the effort, and lastly, again rewarding when they sub. It means that they appreciate the video they just watched and would like to see more.
4.) Some people online have enough subscribers and vids that they are paid by youtube through their advertisement program. I am NOT in that program, but I heard the money you actually recieve from you tube is miniscule. However, any money recieved could help buy paint, a model or two? That doesn't apply to me, but 99% of all wargaming youtubers do it for free and have no financial backing, so what is wrong if they get a couple bucks for their efforts?

Oh, good grief. Please don't do that. I specifically said that I was not referring to you two different times. The fact that you put that in your video gave me a reason to FINALLY be able to ask why people do that. I've never knowingly spoken to somebody that uploads to YouTube on a regular basis, let alone ask for subscribers, so this seemed like a golden opportunity to search for knowledge.
As for your reply, I can fully see #2 and #4. Those two make perfect sense to ask people to subscribe. I see what your saying with the other two, but the same thing can happen with no subscription. The end of #4 though (again, NOT SAYING YOU), is exactly what I think a lot of people do it for. "Subscribe so that I know you love me and validate me" (once more, NOT SAYING YOU).
Thanks so much for answering my question about this even though it was off topic. You're aces.
To the point, awesome tutorial. The wash at the end really brought it back around.
It seems to me that with some more pinpoint application of the highlights, you could use this technique to make some pretty convincing stockings or patent leather/vinyl boots or clothing. This is going to certainly be filed away and tried out. Ironically enough, I'm subscribing to this thread.
I think this might help with my DE wyches I'm getting set to do. A question for you cattafish, what type of brushes do you use , not the drybrush but the regular kind. My brushes seem to be getting worn out and going limp quickly. I can't figure out if its me being too rough (kinda noobish still) or if they are just poor quality (army painter brushes fyi).
"The uniforms of the Imperial guard are camouflaged in order to protect their wearers by hiding them from sight. the principle is that what the enemy cannot see, he cannot kill. This is not the way of the Adeptus Astartes. A Space Marine's armour is bright with heraldry that proclaims his devotion to his Chapter and the beloved Emperor of Mankind. Our principle is that what the enemy can see, he will soon learn to fear." -The codex Astartes
armies:
I have been using Kolinsky series 7 brushes for about 7 months now and they are finally getting tired. The problem you most likely are running into is brushes that use synthetic fibres don't last at all.
I was using fairly cheap brushes from Michaels (Canada) and found that they would curl in no time. Once I invested in real fibre (hair) brushes it truly made a difference. You MUST take more care of your brushes however because you are out of pocket so much more. If ya screw up a cheap brush, who cares? ya buy a new one. But if you invest in expensive brushes, it kinda hurts more if you get paint in the furrel (sp).
I believe Les - Awesomepaintjob has a fantastic set of videos on brush selection and he is WAY more qualified than me to comment on the subject.
Good quality brushes for details like 10/0 ones and lower quality brushes when it comes to drybrushing or applying pva and the lot, in which case you can use an older worn out one
And here I just started doing some Ravenwing! This will be great. I've been loving your tutorials so far, I'm sure this one will be just as awesome once I start using them!
(I would love to subscribe but I do not have a YT account since they did the merge which forced everyone to use a Google account.)

Nice vid, thanks. Was needing a way to make black look more realistic.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Just subscribed to your YouTube page. I think this will help me with my SM army I'm creating, it uses a lot of black in the color scheme.
