Only 40K I'd have to say my IG army, ive probably used it twice in the 2/3 years I've had it and have had no inclination to do anything with it since I stuck half of it together and got bored

Buying 2,500 pts. of marines at once. I think it took me twice as long as it should have to paint them due solely to long periods of burn out.

2. Painting said Space Wolves in my own colour scheme which I now don't like.

I'm still deciding what to do with them.

Buying Kommandos as my first ork unit (which is now lost in the warp somewhere in Illinois.) gluing and painting a metal model is a pain and i just shouldn't have tried it as one of my first units. of course the case i had them in didn't help matters. his arm kept falling off so id have to glue it back on.

Seconded!

I just over filled a bookshelf unit with all the stuff that needs finishing/repairing.

I must have 6000 point worth of warhammer to fix\paint. And 150 points of Warmachine/hordes to do. They look at me mornfully as if to say "Please, please paint us? You were so excited when you clicked add to basket, what happend?"

And i just bought an entire tomb kings army. I can't stop myself

My worst mistake was that I wanted to start vanilla marines. I bought the battleforce, assembled it, and then a couple of tactical squads, and assembled them...

Then I decided BA were the way to go and I only like using assault squads >.< Not very big mistake though

Another mistake was thinking Tau were insanely good, and so I started playing them... I still love how they play, despite my hopes and dreams not being fulfilled.

I decided I was getting out of IG and let one of the guys at my FLGS "borrow" ~2,500 points of painted Steel Legion, including chimeras, basilisks, and Leman Russes. Then, for some reason, I stopped seeing the guy around. I wasn't really playing 40K that much, and the few times I'd stop into that store, he wasn't in. No malfeasance or anything, we just never really hooked up. Then I moved to a different part of the state, and only visited the store once in a blue moon, and never caught up with him. Now I can't even remember his NAME.

That was probably 8 years ago now. Woulda liked to have used that IG in an army swap, but can only blame myself for not keeping track.

The other would be misplacing my Talisman and Space Hulk boxes from the day. Mint condition and I have no idea where they are. I have a sneaking suspicion my mom sold them at a garage sale when they moved.

The worst mistake I made was a constellation of mistakes all under the heading of "eldar"

- I started by buying a viper, and making my army pain scheme based on a vehicle rather than an infantry model

- I bought my codex AFTER collecting at least a couple of miniatures.

- I purchased and painted models from 3 different force org slots before I even bought my first troop models.

- For troops, I chose rangers...

- My army was comprised of units that I thought looked cool, without any regard to what they could accomplish on the field. With an eldar army...

I'll take them off your hands for you.

I painted up 1500 points of marines as Salamanders, then decided that Imperial Fists best suited my play style. Hard repainting from dark green to bright yellow.

Christ where to start.

Buying three chaos dreads and converting/painting them up for my thousands sons army about a week before the forgeworld one came out.

Painting up a squad of 10 necro enforcers as arbites for my sisters, 1pt less a model than a sister for a shotgun and carapace armour doh.

Buying lots of cities of death terrain and rarely using it.

Painting every type of unit in my old eldar army in a completely different scheme so they look a complete mess on the table.

Still having a 1000pts of dark elves some still in blisters in my cupboard from the release of the old armies book.

Thinking that the old warhammer chaos books would still be wonderfully interchangeable in the later edition, so several units of beasts and daemons would be a really cool addition to my warriors.... I miss screamers

I think mine so far is starting Space Marines as my first army and having little idea what kind of army I wanted them to be I have around 2000pts now with some unmodelled and they really suck as an army lol I need £150 ish more stuff just to make it useful, and I'm really bored of them already

While not 40k buying almost 1500pts of Warriors of Chaos, painting the marauders horribly and now not wanting any of it any more. EBay will soon fix my problems as I only painted the marauders and two sorcerers leaving me with loads of bear plastic. I’ve also got Daemons, Chaos and Eldar to finish

Tau battleforce. Was getting back into the game, and despite already having a decent amount of CSM to start from, I thought I'd get back in with Tau. Played with the CSM just as filler, and before I knew it, the CSM army had grown by about 200%, while the Tau battleforce remained half-assembled and forgotten on an end-table. Money I coulda used to get 3 more rhinos!

I read somewhere that 40k's recognition in America really took off when Tau were released. I think something about the mecha appeals to our exposure to anime. They were what I wanted to start as, but fortunately my friends persuaded me to start as marines so as to better learn the game first.

Using a spray coat made for model cars (metalic purple flake) to base coat a unit of my Dark Eldar back in 3rd ed..

Back then I had no idea of how to strip paint off of minis...so I just kept trying to "fix" the squad by painting areas black...the acrylic paints kept pooling on the enamel paint and made a bigger mess...

I finally ended up using some testors enamel paints to "fix" the squad, designated them Haemonculi guard and painted every thing else in the army using a scheme from the codex ( Black Heart) and citadel paints...

A year later a buddy of mine did the exact same thing with his Tyranid army...only he used silver spray enamel...fixing that mess took weeks.

Oh, and selling the two ROC books.

While buying a codex to see if I want to start an army (Which I might have done anyways to check out fluff and things to prepare against.) but then buy less than 500 points of units. Feels like I wasted money since I have so many small armies.
Also I wish I would have bought a box at a time paint them then buy more, I doubt I'll ever paint all my minis.
