2. the film was terrible. Chaplins with Psychic powers and Chaos Marines who die in one shot. There is little personalty in the characters and no real story.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.
It was probably the worst movie I had seen In a long time. The characters were all the same. They were badly introduced, and the names were all so similar that I barely remebered anyones name. All I can remember was the apothicary was pythos, and there was a guy named prothius. I never got to know the characters, so when one of them died, I didn't really care. At all. It was just like, "Oh that guy died. I think his name was... uhh.. i don't remember."
There was way too much of them walking around aimlessly. Really, I think there should have been a scene at the beggining of the imperial fists desperatly fighting off an unseen enemy, while sending a destress call. That would have drawn people in. The walking around should have been used for character development. Instead it was squandered. If they used it to let me know the characters, I would have cared when they died. Instead I didn't give a feth. The only interesting characters were The two imperial fist guys and pythos. The captain was just the "Slightly more pious marine with chainsword."
There was little attempt at adding some humour and the couple of times they did it fell flat. I only realized they had been trying to be funny a minute later, and it made it even worse to realize how unnoticed their "Jokes" went. I Also hated how they just left the landspeeder behind. I kinda think that If all you had was a tactical squad and a land speeder, you would sacrifice a couple guys shooting boltguns in the place of a landspeeder firing a heavy bolter or flamer or something.
The fight scences were sub-par. The one where the captain came back should of had a more desperate air to it. They shot almost everything that came within ten feet, and the one guy that actually almost made it got his face seared off by the crouzios. The berzerkers should have gotten in to close-combat, and the marines should have had to do some elbow bashes and gun beat-downs, as well as some close-range bolter ownage. That way, when the possesed captain came back to save them, I would have felt releived that they were saved.
The demon scenes were totally lack-luster. They could've been a whole lot better. Also, when they were getting ready to face off the demon, they weere in the armoury. Someone tell me why they didn't decide to suit up in terminator armour with whirlwind missile launchers and thunder hammers and storm sheilds, while duct-taping heavy bolters to their arms or something? That would have made the fight a lot more epic and awesome. Instead they just walked past the rows of super-special-awesome wargear and decided to take on a demon prince with bolters.. All and all, I give it a half a star..
Sorry about the hater rant, I just had to let that out.

For this small of a budget. Its pretty good, 6 out of 10. But apart from that the characters bland and looked way way too old. Space Marines do not age like that.
I agree with alot of other posters. They were in the armory.... And they only took bolters against a daemon........ only bolters.... BOLTERS! What are they idiots?
Apparently the Chaplain can cast spells now.

Awful movie, it was just rushed out there with the brand 40k as its only hope. Boring plot/characters, too much walking, and Chaos Space Marines acted like Hormagaunts and had the toughness of them to boot.

"Someone tell me why they didn't decide to suit up in terminator armour with whirlwind missile launchers and thunder hammers and storm sheilds, while duct-taping heavy bolters to their arms or something?"
They had recently been Scouts. They had not yet been awarded the Crux Terminatus. To attempt to wear Terminator armor before such time would be offensive to the war-spirits within such a hallowed suit, and at least painful, if not fatal, to the Marine with the temerity to attempt such a sacrilege.
It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
I gave it an 8. I enjoyed the story, the graphics etc. weren't as dire as people were making them out to be, and it was one interpretation of how marines should behave on the battlefield (which I think is always difficult, you will always alienate some viewers). I enjoyed watching it, which I think is what it comes down to in the end. After so many years waiting for a 40k movie it was great to finally get one, and I was realistic in terms of what to expect in terms of budget and the narrative.

Yep fluff is the biggest enemy of something like this, I personally thought the movie was watchable as far as animated movies go but I didn't enjoy it when i focussed on the actual story and how it lined up with what we have learnt about 40k over the past 30 years (or so) Tactical squads do not behave like that, hell modern soldiers don't behave like that, not even cowboys and indians just walked around a desert waiting to get shot whilst bickering with each other! and of course the obvious chaplain with the crozius and the power! puh-lease!
however, despite all it's obvious flaws and discrepancies it's still the first 40k movie we have got! and hopefully if we pull back on the hate or are constructive in our critisism, they may, just may, listen to us and make an extremely better movie for the 2nd one!

I liked it
I mean i had to skip past the excessive walking, but the bits that were there i enjoyed
Except for the *spoilers* the Daemon prince acting like a bug every time he jumped around
Well, it had some 40k in it so I guess that counts for something, but aside from that, the Ultramarines movie was pretty awful.
Had it been an internet fan project, it might have been..."ok" as a 15 minute YouTube flick, even if a little derpy in terms of story and dialogue and dated in visuals, but pretty much what one would expect of an internet fan project.
As a multimillion dollar hour long DVD feature, it's abysmal. Too much "for the glorious honor of the gloriously honorable glory, and macragges honorably glorious honor!" and braindead human wave attacking Chaos Marines, AP2 bolters everywhere, and generally just awful tripe.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights! The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.
When I first saw it, I thought it was good when I got in my head the idea that it was a (relatively) low budget film done by an Independent production company as their FIRST movie. So, with that in mind, I enjoyed it.
There is a LOT of things I would have prefered, but as a first try? It's not a bad start, though some of the ideas were...meh at best. Of course, I'm a softie, I avoid the haterade. XD
All in all, would give them a second try in a heartbeat, willing to see what they do after learning from this.

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?
My hatred for space marines which burns like the passion of a thousand sons aside; I surprisingly found the film tolerable. I went in expecting to a film about a handful of ultramarines kicking chaos but like they were skipping through a meadow while they stroked their bolters and talked about how awesome they are...a lot of that did happen, granted.
The sight of seeing ultramarines dying withing ten minutes of the movies start brought a tear of sheer joy to my eyes.
I feared that when the captain returned, that was more ultramarine superiority rubbish, but the little turn at the end did actually pleasantly surprise me- although I might have just been to busy raging over thinking that a mere capt took down a greater daemon.
Do I wish the graphics looked better? Yes. But I got over it.
Was seeing marines in full power armour doing flips a bit much? Yes. Did that rickety wooden bridge look completely wrong holding up a squad of 2 tonne marines? Heck yes.
But there were little things i liked. Such as the loading bay at the start of the film- hearing the techpriests chanting their little chants in the background; i felt that was a nice touch.
Really, it was the music that did it for me. I cannot deny that the music in this movie is wonderful- I even watched it a second time right after the first just so i could listen to it again.
Overall, I found it tolerable. Could it have been better? maybe. But it also could have been a lot worse.
Good story, reasonable development, and for an INDY company with NO MONEY FROM GW (seriously, so many people get that wrong. 40k does not necessarily mean GW did it people!) for their *first film* and on a very, very low budget (seriously - who said it was multimillion dollar? You're kidding, right? Or just pulling numbers out of your ass?)
Yes, the graphics needed more work. However to leap over this to the next level requires serious ££££ - the FF maya plugin alone costs you 10s of thousands, never mind renting space on the render FARM you would need to actually process the images.
Chaos marines were supposed to die in droves. That was the point.
The movie was awful. Bland characters, lacklustre setting, boring action, unsurprising twist etc etc.
The complete departure from any kind of established fluff would be fine, were this movie aimed at a target audience that hadn't got the slightest clue about the 40k universe. It wasn't. It was aimed at hobbyists who have a deep, rich understanding of the universe, who hoped that attributing a major BL name such as Dan Abnett would ensure that, despite the (lack of) animation/graphical quality, at least the storyline would be up to scratch. I think most felt incredibly let-down.
So yeah, a terrible movie by modern standards mixed with sub-par animation and an almost complete disregard for the established fluff within the universe it presides in. I hope they never do another; 40K is much, much cooler in my head.
It was refreshing to see The chainsword being a big deal, and the thunder hammer(could be a daemon hammer, but I don't think so) being a sacred relic rather than just the powerfist you get on assault terminators together with the storm shield.
Gives you a different perspective on marines from when you build an army.
The movie itself was too long, and had too much walking, and seemed like it would fit better as an episode in a series.
GENERATION 14: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig and add 1 to the generation. social experiment.
The main problem with the film for me was that I had no idea who anyone was. I recognised the Captain and the Apothecary but nobody else. When everyone is dressed the same you really need to make the characters different and easily identifiable or you end up with no attachment to any of them.
Another thing that bothered me was that the power armour didn't seem to do anything to defend the space marines or CSM. If your armour can't defend against the basic weapon of your biggest enemy, whats the point of it in the first place? Also, if these CSM could kill that many Imperial Fists, who probably weren't on their first mission, wouldn't they slaughter the Ultramarines? They are bolstered by the warp and also more experienced, yet they all just seem to charge and die. I would have liked to have seen a more balanced fight, that made the whole evil counterpart aspect of the CSMs more obvious.
Overall, I thought the film could have been much, much better but it wasn't terrible. Just needed to stick more closely to the source material.
