In fairness, most of the after the first hit the Space Marines on either side seemed to move to grab fallen weapons and like. The problem was that most of them got shot multiple times in rapid succession.
Personally, I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. Quite liked it overall.

Even if they love/adore the 40k universe and knew every piece of fluff inside and out, they still would not have done it for gratis, would you? Also, people like them would most likely have agents whou would also want a piece of the pie..
As good as the actors were who they drew into doing the voice acting, I can't imagine that their payment was any significant amount of the rumoured $5 million it cost to make, especially when you consider it was probably just a couple of afternoons work speaking into a mike and then doing some promotional material.
Also, they are not the kinds of 'big names' who would command mega bucks for appearances - note that 3 other thesps who do rake in the cash for big Hollywood releases, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart and Derek Jacoby, were not part of the cast.
Also, it was definitely worthwhile hearing John Hurt reading the opening 40k spiel, the movie got an extra point just on the basis of that
Regardless of the U.S audience and who they consider to be big name 'Thesp's', believe me when I say that Terence Stamp and Shuan Pertwee ARE actors of the highest quality. Check them out on IMDB. But you are right about the serious money I guess, but then that begs the question, where did the budget go?!. Although I actually enjoyed it as a one off film, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew absoloutly nothing about the 40k history and fluff therein......

The main problems I had was that it just looks like a game trailer instead of a film. I am sure there would be many big film companies who would love to make a film using the 40k fluff

Exactly! Which would be far, far worse than a small indy company doing it on a low budget. Much worse. And it's exactly the same reason Terry Pratchett's books don't get made into movies by Hollywood.
"We like the story of Mort and would love to make it into a movie. But can we leave Death out of it? It's a bit morbid".
For those that aren't familiar with Pratchett, Death is the main character in Mort.
If I see a Marine on the main screen with a love interest, I may just throw up into my popcorn.

I agree, better to get so-so quality indie movies then have 40k get the Hollywood treatment.
Hollywood would probably do an ok job with a Inquisitor or IG theamed movie though. Love interest would be permissable there.

Yes sarpedons-right-hand, I am fully aware of the acting credentials of the voice actors in Ultramarines
I genuinely believe the acting school -> theatre -> big screen transition is the best way to produce some truly amazing acting talent, and is one of the main reason British actors feature so prominently in Hollywood. On the stage, it doesn't matter how pretty you are, if you can't act then you won't survive for long.

But I see the Judge Dredd movie, one of my other favorite sci-fi universes, and I shake with fear at the prospect of what Hollywood might unleash on 40k.
Although perhaps that is being a little unfair on Hollywood. The key would be to get someone who has enough muscle, and cash, within the industry who can make the movie without too much studio interference. Perhaps someone like Ridley Scott, who has his own production company, and can easily get finance for whatever project he is working on. Or James Cameron, although then the marines would probably be fighting under water.
In whatever case, I'm sure there is a majority consensus that we don't want another Judge Dredd, or another I, Robot.

I've thought about that quite a lot. Especially being an IG player right down to my bone marrow. But seriously, I'd want to see a series of movies of other armies first, other marine chapters, eldar, tau, whatever cos else a Guard movie would be lost in amongst the bucketloads of movies with Imperial Guard-like forces. Emperor knows if I needed to get into the mood before a Rogue Trader session when I was playing my archmilitant I'd just watch Starship Troopers. TBH now i'm playing a pilot, I still do.
Though I still reckon 15 Hours would make a killer movie. And Ork-like creatures haven't been done as far as I know but you put IG against Nids or Necrons and people will just say "seen that done already".
I still loved the Ultramarine movie but then I watched it for what it was, rather than what it wasn't, and the voice actors....omg, well, you can't get better voice actors than those guys - not by throwing all the money in the world into the budget. I was kinda amazed at the names they got. Heh, the interviews with them are pretty good, too.
I don't know who it was that said the different Marines blended into each other and you couldn't tell who was who, but I found their personalities and nuances in their armour made it really easy to tell the battle brothers apart. And that's me with low observation skills and a craptastic memory!

Well I think is good, considering the budget they had, though one problem was that their power armour designated them 2nd Company, of which I don't think that they would send a captain only with a newly trained squad of SMs, and also I think there should have been a dreadnought in which IMO would have been awesome

First time I saw it I gave it a 2 because I rated as I would a normal movie. The second time I watched it I had it in my mind that it was a movie based on a board game with a low budget and I gave it a 6.
To better represent 40k,I think there should have been less shooting deaths between the marines. The chaplain was just plain wrong.
I liked the apothecary, he reminded a lot of the apothecary from Helsreach. The Demonprince was also pretty well done.
