Paizo has put their pre-painted miniatures set up for pre-order @ 12.99USD.

There are four plastic pre-painted miniatures representing the iconic cleric, rogue, fighter, and wizard. (All on 1" bases.)

The detail on these things looks great to me.

Kyra, the human cleric of Sarenrae

Paizo wrote:Q: Are these prepainted plastic miniatures included in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Beginner Box?
A: The Beginner Box includes more than 80 full-color pawns, but it does not include any prepainted plastic miniatures. This set is a separate product designed to complement the Beginner Box or stand on its own.

Q: Are the miniatures in this set randomized?
A: It's a fixed set of miniatures. The exact list of minis will be announced soon.

Q: How much will this set cost?
A: The exact price will be announced soon. Expect the price to be comparable to similar WizKids miniatures boxed sets.

Q: Will this set be part of Paizo's Pathfinder Roleplaying Game subscription?
A: This set is produced by WizKids under license from Paizo, and is not part of any Paizo subscription.

Q: How does this affect the Pathfinder Miniatures line from Reaper Miniatures?
A: Reaper Miniatures has been producing unpainted metal Pathfinder Miniatures since Fall 2009, and they will continue to do so.

Q: Do these miniatures use Reaper's sculpts?
A: These miniatures use all-new sculpts by WizKids.

A 50/50 black/sepia wash = win

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

They're bloody amazing, if you put yourself into the shoes of a RPGer not familiar with a brush. And, I agree -- a little wash for those of who have painted miniatures and maybe some drybrushing here and there . . . these are very cool for the price.

They look quite nice (although I agree that a wash would benefit them and get rid of that WoW look they kind of have currently). One thing to be careful of is that the D&D non-randomized minis also looked quite nice in the promo pics months before they came out and then were released with maybe half the paint steps and colors in those pics. Granted, that was WOTC and not Paizo but its definitely a lesson to keep in mind in general.

That's photoshop coloring, isn't it? I mean, the black on that cleric can't be real.

It could be really harsh lighting. It looks like, perhaps, they're intentionally going for a sort of 'cell shaded' paint job instead of a more traditional look.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

We hardcore wargame fans might look down on pre-painted, however there are probably tons of RPG players who want to play the game and aren't interested in painting figures to go with it.

Personally I'm fine with pre-painted. It's unpainted I can't be doing with.

Wow. In this day and age, would it be too much to wash those things if you prepaint them? Don't get me wrong, they could look good. If you'd wash them.

The 'paint' does look a little over-saturated, which makes me think photoshop rather than physical paintjob.

And either way, these would be just the studio prototypes. I would be very, very surprised if the actual product has a paintjob that neat, for that price.

There's big money in PPMs. RPGrs don't necessarily know how to paint, but like minis just the same.

I literally know 2 RPGrs with tons of prepainted minis. One of the two has an entire bankers box full of them. That's a huge investment, and they want certain minis so they buy solo off of the web or ebay alot. I'd say between the two guys I know they've spent at least $4,000 USD.

I personally don't like them or like painting them, but there's no denying that there's a market for them, and it's bigger than a niche.

I wouldn't. The newest Heroclix figures(especially the Blackest Night and GL movie Target singles) are miles ahead of the stuff PPP used to look like.

New Wizkids has kinda set the bar others need to meet, IMO.

I was about to say 'Pshaw!' or 'Malarky' or some such, but after a quick google I have to admit they do appear to have improved significantly over the older sets.

Doesn't change the fact that these particular pictures look photoshopped, but they may not be too far from the actual product.

I don't know. I've never seen a prepaint that actually lived up to the hype of the advertisements.

At $3.25 per model, these things aren't worth it to me.

You mean in the sense of having had the colours enhanced?

I don't see why it would be necessary. There are bright coloured paints.

The amount of detail on the first one looks a bit too good for bulk hand-painting.

It's something about the way the colours look. Yes, there are bright paints, but these look over-saturated, and the edges of the colours (the elf's right hand, and the wizard's pouches, for example) and the shading in places (the fighter's loincloth and the elf's raised blade) just doesn't look right.

That may just be a result of taking pics of the painted minis into photoshop and boosting the colour... or it may be a sign that they've been painted digitally.

What do you gents make of the gleam and reflections on the bases?
Ahtman wrote:Can't wait for the iconic Inquisitor.
You and me both, but she'd be rather "down the line." First things first: have you heard that there will be a "Set 2" in this line? As I understand it, these are a "starter set." (I guess that could mean they go with but are sold separately from the upcoming Pathfinder starter box -- and maybe the premade characters, if there are any, in that product will be a cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard?)

That they were painted, photo'd, then placed into photoshop to exaggerate or fix the colors to their more natural shade.

I should think it was that. Why paint digitally when it's cheaper to paint normally.

Take a look at the fighter's hair in that regard. OTOH, the cleric's loin cloth is about right.

These look like masters and 3ups to me, maybe even photoshopped. Still a good thing after the D&D miniature range died.

If only the PPP we receive in the packaging looked like these.

Unfortunately, I do not trust PPP, I would much rather paint them myself to ensure everything is within the lines and of my choosing.

I'm pretty sure these are 3D digital renders, looks quite similar to what wizkids uses for their promos. I would expect the same differance in quality from digital prototype to actual figure as you get with any of the heroclix models.
