Hello Dakka

I have an old 2nd edition Squat army that I would like to start using again, probably as IG. I have never really played IG before, so I'm not sure if I have enough Squats to make up all the infantry numbers required.

At the moment I have about 30 Squat troops with lasguns and a few special/heavy weapons to work with (not counting command units). I also have three Super Heavy tanks which could count-as something big. And I could certainly add more tanks (I like making tanks). I also wouldn't mind adding human Commissars.

Is it possible to make a decent 1750-2000 point IG army with fewer than 30 IG troops, and the rest as tanks? What would be a good sample list?

And is there a superheavy that I could take more than one of in a normal sized game, that wouldn't be considered annoying and cheating?

30 Troops could be 3 vet squads, now all you need is an HQ and then you can add a slew of tanks. (for three vet squads you may want chimeras for them)

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......

But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS!

If you'll be playing seriously, consider rebasing the squats to give them raised bases (standing on rocks etc) and thus close to normal human height overall, it will save a million arguments re LoS and 'cheating'.

30 troops does seem awfully low for IG, you'll probably want more to keep the squat theme throughout (as opposed to being an IG army which just happens to have some abhuman troops). Definitely worth checking out the WFHB Dwarves - they have a rather different look, but might be fine to use as officers and HQ. Or start digging around on Ebay etc for the ancient GW metal squats.

As portugus says, a tank army will probably suit you best, with just enough support infantry (probably in Chimeras) to help out with stuff tanks don't do well.

Sorry, the Leman Russ is the biggest tank in the standard IG codex - you may need to save your superheavies for Apocalypse games.

Thunderers/quarelers from whfb would be an easy conversion into squats.

Run them as ig melta vets in transports. Won't be a cheap army because of the transports, but it would be a top tier competitive army with cool conversions.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Yeah, Mech Vet IG is pretty darn lethal. If you grab some WHFB dwarves, you could make some blob squads and flesh out your numbers. Conventional Mech Vet lists are made a lot stronger by dumping 200 points in a blob squad.

I believe ArbitorIan has a really sweet Squat IG army. I think it caps at 1500 points, but it'll give you ideas. His list is really unconventional, mind, but it looks to be a whole lot of fun.
