Hey all,
I am feeling the itch to start another army. I currently play Ultramarines, but have been intrigued by the two mentioned armies above and just can't decide. I really like both army's models and fluff. So here is what I am curious about:

1.) Are the Eldar that hard to play? I have heard a few stories, but no one really plays them in my LGS.
2.) Do the Space Wolves pretty much play exactly like the regular Space Marines or is there enough variance in them that it feels like a totally distinct group?

Thanks all!

Eldar are still quite powerful considering how old there dex is. One of my good friends plays them and usually places 1st or top 3 in tournies he goes to.

Space wolves are a strong army as well in tournament play but there are certain units you are pretty much required to play to do so.

I would go for eldar considering that they are-

-still quite good

-have a new dex coming and will probably be better

-beautiful models

-multiple competitive play styles

I have always saw Eldar as more of a finesse army, but then again their are proven internet builds that totally kick that opinion in the face. In your case I would go Eldar as it is a completely different army than what you have, and therefore you might find it more interesting.

As someone who went from Dark Angels to Space Wolves quite some time ago, I can give some advice on that matter. Space Wolves do play differently than codex Marines, but over time you'll see the similarities, and probably get bored with the army before you would get bored with something more exotic. They are fun to play though, and they do have their own bevvy of special rules and equipment to make them distinct.

Eldar, however, are a much different army and I think would be more rewarding to you, as someone who already has a Marine army. I played nothing but Marine armies for years and years and years, but when I finally started a xenos army it was a breath of fresh air. Eldar are a bit hard to play, and some of their units are a bit overcosted, but if you're smart, utilize each unit in the role it's suited for and use your farseer powers well, you can do very well with them. You said yourself there aren't many in the area, so playing them will also inject some variety into your local gaming group.

+1 for Eldar.

Space wolves arent a "new" army if you already play vanilla's, they are the same army with the word "wolf" in front of all their wargear

Try something different, after 7 years of just playing with CSM's I moved on to Eldar, now I have 4 non-MEQ armies and (with the exception of IG) I like all of them more than my marines.

Fetish BDSM Elves IN SPAAAAACE! or Twilight fangirl wish fulfillment army part 2. It's a tough one. Depends on whether you want a generally balanced army, like the Dark Eldar, or an over-powered to hell army like Space Wolves.
Dark Eldar are the typical Glass Cannon. They hit hard but can't take the same amount of punishment as Space Marines, for example. They use a lot of transports, and most units fufill a purpose, and most are viable choices. The book is probably to most balanced codex this edition, and produces a stupid number of lists, both fluffy and competitive.

Space Wolves are stupidly overpowered. Most of their units are undercosted, their fluff has been ruined this edition.

I'm pretty sure the OP means normal (Craftword) Eldar, not Dark Eldar.

Doi . Well, the description about Glass Cannon stands. They require quite a lot of tactical maneuvering and fore-thought to pull off., but they work extremely well if this is done successfully. They don't forgive mistakes. One wrong movement and that could be the game finished for you. Their codex is old so it's lacking in flexibility as many units have become redundant, meaning there is a lot less viable lists you can put together.

Space Wolves play just like vanilla Marines, only better. There are a few differences, but anybody claiming it's a whole new experience is trying to sell you something.

I'd say Eldar. They're rare. People will like you for playing a rare army, far more so than for being individualistic Space Wolves player #1034576.

+1 to Eldar, if you really want to play SW, use your ultramarines, and say theyre in a different company and "fights a little different" from the standard codex... i made the initial mistake of trying to get 2 power armored armies on the same side of the imperium. I got extremely bored painting the armor, and ended up stripping the paint, and painted up my Iron Snakes force. Either way, the Space Wolves are just MORE power armor.

I'd say go with the more exotic, not painted as much before Eldar. I think that the artistic elements alone could be great fun to model and paint before you get too many games in.
