On the battlefield, in that dark corner you forgot to check.

Greetings! I am just taking my first steps towards raising my first army (40K Imperial Guard, in this case) and thought that this would be a good place to drop in and introduce myself and announce this fact.

Suggestions, hints, tips, and general advice for this slightly intimidated newcomer would be welcome.

You're new? Steer clear of the OT forums, and anything related to sisters of battle.

Welcome.

Welcome aboard! And try not to be intimidated, not everyone here bites (Tyranid brood lords aside). What sort of guard army you heading for? Mechanised, infantry swarm...or a balance?

welcome! If I were you, I would build up a nice swarm of guardsmen before the tanks and vehicles, but obviously include
some form of HQ, a command squad is a good choice for its mixed roles and variations of use in certain scenarios. after you have a large infantry force, I would suggest a leman russ tank or a squad of sentinels depending on your tactics. after you have your core force, your ready for specialists like ratlings or ogryns, which make good offensive and defensive units.

well I hope this helps, and again welcome to the forums and hope to see you in many discussions in the future!

Thanks for the welcomes!

I think I'm eventually heading in the direction of a mechanised force, but I obviously wouldn't want to miss out on having a swarm of guardsmen. (As I told someone at the local GW store, I'm in this for "large amounts of troops and large amounts of tanks.")

I'm thinking I'll start with enough to field a platoon or two plus the CCS and maybe a Sentinel or two. Once I get a feel for things, I will start rolling out the Leman Russes.

Incidentally, I have a slightly absurd colour scheme in mind. I'll be sure to show it all to you once I have a few representative models at the ready.

Hi,
