Subject: Re:cyborks & flyboyz : now with chipped armour
No work done over the weekend, and probably not a lot getting done this week. We're re-laying parts of the warehouse at work and that means I get to come in for some weird long-a$$ night-shift thing for this week. Yay And dakka seems to be a bit dead during these hours, not good enough people, I need input. More input Stephanie. Guess if I do get any stuff done I could put pics on a memory stick and upload from work, that'll kill a little time. (I'm not doing much, more of a supervisory role, and the contractors know what they're doing so....)
Sage - guess that means I may need a new addy from you.
Nice, throw the film back at me with a quote that could relate to my last post Top marks for Ben's second name too, until I saw it I probably wouldn't have remembered the Ben part (it has been a long time)
I'll tell you my Brooklyn addie instead, just let me know when you are ready to send it. yours is ready to go, will send it at end of week when i get home and finals are done!

Subject: Re:cyborks & flyboyz : now with chipped armour
So as I was fairly happy with the weathering on the buggy I decided to try it on one of the cyboar-boyz. Messy as buggery due to being up for 24h now (was on night-shift Thursday, doing day on Saturday, still not sure when I'm working next week - nothing like messing the old body-clock about ) so it'll get re-done when there's a chance I'll paint straight. Then I realised I'd already started sponging the actual boar, and I'm wondering if I'm going to have to re-do one or the other, or if I can get away with differing techniques on 2 parts of the same model.
SO, ignoring the fact that I'm going to have to re-do the red armour anyway (I realised it was a bit sloppy but not as bad as the pics show ), what do you reckon? Re-do the boar with the highlight/granite, re-do the boy with sponging, leave the 2 different styles, or some mix of the above?
And can I get away with both methods on various parts of the force, for example the 'speeder based 'kopta has been fairly heavily sponged, be a pain to re-do that, opposite applies to the piranha-buggy. I don't see this as too big a problem, but that might just be my bias towards not wanting to re-do models that took long enough to get some of that painty-type stuff on them
Also - Sage's 'Ardboy finally finished, again. With a slight colour change as I wasn't real happy with the blue, although as I was reworking it, that was a bit of a moot point...
If I'm doing a couple of nights next week should get it out then, but if it's all days I probably won't get a chance to get to the post office till at least christmas eve
I say redo the red, leave the different styles. It doesn't really strike me as a horrible mismatch. I'd add a bit more detail to the tail part though, seems your lack of sleep has caused you to miss some details

I really like the paint job on the boars armour and its rider. I like it a lot. The colours you've used complement each other really well (that is the armour colours with the boar hair).

'tis lovely! So Orky! I could make an 40k Ork army just for the availability to go nuts with converting.

CK - thanks, that's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if I was just being biased towards laziness One of the things I'm finding with this project is that I'm trying lots of different techniques that I've picked up over the years but haven't actually practised much/at all.
This is the first 'serious' painting (yeah I know, don't expect to see me and serious in the same sentence very often) I've done in a fair few years, it's all been a little bit of 'main colour on here, a highlight over there' on a variety of minis, none of them getting done.
Coming onto dakka really spurred me to get into it properly again, and it's really interesting to find myself trying out all these things I've read about/seen/played about with previously. At the same time I get worried that it won't all gel due to me constantly changing techniques.
As to the missing details, I really wish I could blame that on the lack of sleep, however the sponging was done a couple of weeks ago whilst doing the same to the 'kopta. I have no idea why I decided I should start on the weathering before finishing the main painting, especially using a sponge
PDH - cheers, I really appreciate that coming from you. Bright colours are something I haven't really played with since the original chaos marines, I tend to keep dark or earthy palletes, or fall back onto good ol' red/black (a little of which has been working it's way onto these guys) so felt it would be cool to push myself that way, and I'm really enjoying it.
Saintspirit - Good ol' Herbork West? He's a favourite of mine too, thanks man. Go for it, grab some orks and just run wild I still find myself wondering at why I ignored orks all these years when my primary love is converting, especially outlandish conversions, but hey, I've found them now and I'm making up for lost time - in a slow, sloth-like manner
weety - why thank you kind lady Like I alluded to above, although there's been little practice in the last few years, I still seem to have absorbed stuff and find I've improved. And obviously there's all the great help and advice to be found on these forums.
neil - well you know, I'm only re-doing the bits I did badly I just think that chips and their respective highlights look a little better when they're actually in contact with each other And you seem to be on a bit of a bad pun kick today. Keep it up. Umm, that lovely silver is a coat of boltgun, followed by a coat of liquitex iridescent silver, from an old stash of paints I re-discovered whilst moving gak out of the workroom/wetroom.
Rose - Sounds like a line from some hideous reality vet TV programme - 'Sponge the boar and earn your team mates some food'
In the grim darkness of the future there is only boar. You can all blame neil's influence for that.
Dang, wall-o-text. Now I'm going to feel onbliged to try and paint something else in a sleep-deprived state (found out I'm doing nights next week so want to try and re-re-adjust my body clock ) just to break up the wordy stuff. I'd much rather be konstruktin' stuff, but still not really viable with various bits boxes in various rooms/nooks/crannies/secret locations/areas of serious scientific interest.
It's a bit hard to tell from the picture, but from what I can tell I believe that the cyboar-boy turned out great! I don't see any problem mixing two techniques. But, if I were you, since you are the one with the privileged of seeing it IRL, I would go with my gut feelings.
Always outnumbered, never outgunned.

Thats what you get with new projects: the chance to push your limits. As for dakka: I feel the same! The encouragement and feedback make you up your game where I'd otherwise tend to say 'Meh, good enough"..., I want to do better now, which really makes me improve.

No worries, happens to us all at times. lack of patience, a small oversight,... Is it doable to fix it, or will that involve messing up the spongework?

c0un7 - Thanks, I just like to get feedback from you guys to make sure I'm not just being lazy like I said to CK.
Yggs - merci, mon ami
Hadouken - long time buddy! Ah well, I never did feel like copying what the 'cool kids' were doing You caught those thieving grots yet?
Sage - Cheers. No problem, PM me your addy and I'll get it out next week sometime, probably Friday.
Hadouken - You don't know Monkey What heresy is this ? I thought it was well known in Oz (However not sure why I thought that, so maybe not ). You need to go immerse yourself in some real culture, you'll love it.
CK - Absolutley. As to the details, should be no issue, and even if it was I think one layer of spongework is easy to repair.
And as you've all been good boys and girls this year a little christmas bonus -
Squig-hound Bit of tidying still, and taken using flash, so a bit more vivid than rl.
I must say, I'm liking this new development, the squig hound, especially with the leg in his mouth (fetch the leg, boy!), but... what exactly is it?

Monkey was a weird hong=kong series back in the 80s I think. It was a hodge podge of buddism, chinese magic and demons set in medieval times. With slapstick and the english dubbing definatly played for laughs - really silly voices.

Lord Kaesar - Glad you like As to what it is exactly, is that 1- what is a squig-hound? or 2 - what's it made from?
1 - Squig-hounds are used by the runt-herds to keep da grotz in line (And I'm currently re-thinking runtherds) 2 - Old Slaan cold one warhound body and head from Inquisitor scale cyber-mastiff
neil - surprisingly easy actually, although it still took me ages, I was hoping the limited palette and small size would mean I actually finished a fast mini, but alas, it doesn't appear to be my lot in life. Galley's dry . Just the bathroom and workroom that aren't They'll be damp into the new year, it took about 3 weeks to dry the bathroom when I had a leak a few years back, and that was in June/July time (apologies if I've mentioned that before)
Hadouken - no, not a flash game. It was a Japanese series made in the late 70's based on a classic Chinese story (A Journey to the West) then dubbed into English. If that doesn't sound bizzare enough for you, well...
And if you've caught those grots there's a pressing matter of some certain missing updates I believe....
weety - Yeah, close enough. The original novel (15th-16th century) was about a monk sent to India to obtain some Buddhist sutras(based on real events). The monk was accompanied by a dragon who assumed the shape of a horse and three members of the heavenly host, who had been exiled and were atoning for past disgressions. Kung-fu, demons, enlightenment - a pretty heady mixture, and then to have a Japanese version made, then dubbed to English, well it was just asking to become a cult hit Added bonuses include the male monk Tripitakka being played by a female and Guan Yin, the female bodhisattva, being played by a male. I'll leave lecturer mode now before I start searching for references Still need to finish getting the DVD's at some point.
Hadouken - YES! That!
CK - Cheers!
weety - 'Demons!'
neil - The nature of Monkeytroll was irrepressible.
