Rebecca Black forced to leave school

Viral video star Rebecca Black, known for her amateur music video “Friday,” was forced to drop out of school due to constant harassment, she told ABC News' Nightline. The 14-year-old is being home-schooled by her mother, a former teacher.

“Friday,” a video Black’s parents paid $4,000 to produce, went viral after it was posted on YouTube this spring.

"After seeing it go from 4,000 views to 70,000 views in one night, and then waking up and it was at 200,000 views, that was when I realized this is going to be big," Black said of her unintentionally funny video.

Along with newfound fame, the wannabe singer began experiencing bullying about her earnest, albeit cheesy, song. Black saw cruel comments posted online, and was constantly harassed at school.

"When I walk by they'll start singing 'Friday' in a really nasally voice,” she explained of her teen tormentors. “Or, you know, they'll be like, 'Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?'"

Rebecca’s spokesman, John Vlautin, had this to say about whether his client was pulled out of school due to harassment over her “Friday” video: “That was certainly part of it, but in Orange County a student can't get credit for school if they miss class for work. So her mom enrolled her in a special program that [Orange County] offers for athletes, performers, etc....”

Black's mother, Georgina Marquez, told ABC that home schooling will help the 14-year-old focus on her career.

And her career seems to be skyrocketing: “Friday” was featured on “Glee,” and Black appeared in Katy Perry's video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." She also won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Web Star at Sunday's show, and has released another single, “My Moment.”

So far, Black says that the proceeds from “Friday” will be enough to cover college tuition.

ROFLMAO. Wow, what a wuss, chick needs to ranger up... and 'focus on her career'? Excuse me, career as what? Pro laughing stock?

Pretty much, but, that's the price of fame, no matter how miniscule, or the reason.

If I was in Highschool and I released a single that could pay for my college tuition. I could put up with kids making fun of me. Or I would just punch them.

Whichever.

Agreed with you Dreadwinter. Personally, I would simply respond with 'I'll think about what you think of me and how this affects my life while I'm rolling around in a pool full of money."

Ineptus, I also know how dumb kids can be in high school... BUT, she's made a pile of money, she should be able to get over it, and I'm sure she still has friends...

Dogma - far from it, I was an outcast and pariah between the 5th grade and the senior year of high school (when I somehow became popular). I was picked on by pretty much everyone, ate lunch by myself 90% of the time, was beat up by bullies on a regular basis, and could count the number of people I could consider to be a friend on one hand, even if two of the fingers on that hand were blown up in some sort of freak accident. The difference is, I had absolutely nothing going for me (read: I didn't make a pile of money).

She is 14.

14.

And how do you know she has made a pile of money?

How do I know? The fact that she stated she has made enough money to cover college tuition. Last I checked, if you took the average cost to attend a four year college (roughly 100k USD depending on the school: http://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2010/08/24/the-average-cost-of-a-us-college-education) and put that into single bill terms, you would quite literally have a pile of money, in fact it would be 35.8 feet high if you stacked them all on top of eachother http://www.ehd.org/science_technology_largenumbers.php)

I am beginning to be glad I have never heard this song...

and yeah, I was jumped behind the school once, me and a friend.

If I recall correctly, we were going to head over to his house for a game of 40k (the day was, ironically, friday, so no real homework) and there is his cliff area that you walk past to get from the 5th grade portable rooms to the parking lot. anyways, these guys (wont say their names) leaped off the cliff and attacked. it ended up not going their way when one of them tripped over a rock and knocked out a tooth, but Ii decided to be homeschooled instead of going to junior high the next year.

I have been homeschooled for...lost count of how many years I have been homeschooled acualy

It sucks, I know that feeling ineptus, I used to get beaten up too. it really sucked, especially when I discovering who I was, the guys would beat me up, spit on me, and tell me I'm a freak.

I'm glad you got out of there, nobody deserves that, it's like they say, kids can be cruel. You don't have much more to go, college is different though, since being there is an option, you'll find the significant decrease in bullies.

When I started beauty school, since it's at a college, there were a lot of douchebag frat guys who like to pick on people, so, when one of the students who was there for something I can't remember, who always saw fit to point out that I was different, and kept bothering me, until I told him "what of it?", at that point, he never bothered me again.

Then I say to you this: get bent. You don't know me, you don't know what I went through, you don't know the torture that I was put through, the number of times I stayed up all night crying because of how much I hated my life. I have the scars, a visibly broken nose, and plenty of witnesses to prove it. And speaking to someone who was apparently a bully, I hope you one day run into the guys you used to pick on, and realize how much your life sucks in comparison to theirs. Forgive me if I don't take pity on a girl who only has to deal with people singing her song in a funny voice or being asked what day of the week it is, I would have been ecstatic if thats all I had to deal with on a given day. Try having vicious rumors spread about you through the school that you shagged your dog (I didn't even have a dog...) and your (male) cousin. Try being choked out by the kid who sits behind you in class (in the middle of class no less). Try being the kid picked last in gym class, and then being targeted by the other kids on your team for physical abuse (being tackled by your teammates when you're not carrying a ball, having dodgeballs thrown at you by your team mates, having soccer balls and basketballs kicked/thrown at your face, etc.). Try sitting a table filled with other kids, and all of them start playing card games, etc. or decide to have a party/hang out after classes or go to a concert and be the only one sitting there at the table not invited. Worse, have them invite people sitting at the other tables around you and still not be invited. Worse still have them finally invite you to do something, and then when you show up at the movie theater to meet them, nobody shows up at all. Yeah, get bent.

At least she is getting some monies out of it and can afford to go to college without building debt.

By the time she is there this will have been forgotten about or people will have suitably matured...

You know I found a weakness in bullies.... they can't handle wit. Depending on who you are dealing with and how witty you are, you can practically run circles round their taunts.

But then again if verbal warfare doesn't work bullies usually move onto physical attacks. Ouch.

Agreed. That just sounds like the typical stuff that happens to the unpopular kids in high school.
