I was interested in starting a second army and have finally settled on Chaos Space Marines.

I was wondering what the general builds and tactics were?

Is it generally better to mix gods or to be monotheistic? I could see benefits to both, but I wanted to know the general consensus. Any help is appreciated.

Well, generally the two most "competitive" lists for CSMs are Dual Lash and Twin Nurgle DPs. Both have pros and cons.

Dual lash is devastating against foot armies. Usually backed up by 9 obliterators, it can be a very powerful list. However, in 5th Edition this list has taken a huge blow from the mech-dominated enviroment and is probably not a list many armies have to tailor against.

Dual Nurgle DP's is basically what it says on the tin. 2 Dp's of Nurgle with wings with either 4-5 squads of Plague Marines with Plas/melta or 3 Squads of Plagues and 2 Squads of Khorne Berzerkers in Rhinos. This can be quite a hard-hitting list if your opponent is caught off guard or you play it well.

Regarding Thousand Sons and Noise Marine, the general consensus is that they are far too expensive for what they actually do and isn't the most competitive way to build up a list.

So generally Nurgle dominates the scene in CSMs with some support from Khorne.

as a chaos space marine player the only real advice i can give you is try to have fun.

also that no matter what anyone says you get a squad of 20 basic chaos marines you deserve a medal cause they are pretty dam good in close combat.

the only real thing you have to watch out for if you run a dual DP plauge list is dont get your demon pricnes stuck out of combat otherwise any half decant player will just shoot them to death with bolters.
that is their real weakness small arms...and power weapons.

also for all deamon princes may i suggest warptime. with warp time you can usually kill about 3-4 models a turn just dont get pulled under by hordes.

otherwise just try to have fun

as for tactics i would suggest my all time favorite... what tactic?

basically this is how to win

groups of 5 nurgle marines in rhinos (give it extra armor) with either meltas or plasmas and just drive up and kill stuff

use the demon prince to get into close combat asap and bog down and destroy units...........give your DP's wings helps

that and just wreck face cause you still can

Do not give anything Extra Armor. That adds up to a huge waste of points really quickly. For almost 50% of the tank's price you mitigate a 16% result.

Mixing the gods is better than mono-god. Basically put dudes in Rhinos, and throw them at the enemy. Everyone in your army is better in close combat than their equal from your opponent's army. Bring lots of close ranged weapons and prepare to get stuck in. As you develop you'll understand the need for long ranged shooting, where best to get it, and how to apply it; however, so long as your opponents are only as skilled as you, you'll be fine without it.
