Subject: You broke my model!!!!!!!!

One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm
|
This question popped into my head when i was playing my friend for the first few times. He played sm and had s t army.
None of his minis were painted, he carried them in a laptop bag, his dad had brought all of them and just to prove his utter dissrespect and care for his models when packing away he would leave his bag open and litrally throw his minis from the table to the floor and if he missed he would go "opps oh well" and carry on!
Amazingly he also has a dissrespect for other people's models for example if i turbo-boosted my destroyers to the other end of the table he would offer to move them for me if I accepted he would pick them up awkwardly and with a too tight grip and slam them down onto the table and them look confused when i give him evil looks.
So then i thought if he broke my models what would i do.
I woud pbrobourly fix it myself if it's a minor wound.
If it's unrepairable e.g. he throws it out a window and someone runs over it in his car it would depend on the model if it was something like a warrior i would probourly just get annoyed and leave it there but if it was somethong more expensive e.g. a Monolith i may want him to pay for it lukily i've never been in a possition to have to make that decision but that leads on to my question.
If someone broke your model what would you do?
If someone oblitorated a expensive model what would you do?
If you broke someone els's model?
If you oblitorated someone els's model?

First thing, no one touches my models unless I tell them they can. Second of all, you break it, you buy me a new one.
Also, I wouldn't even play with this kid you mentioned. He has no respect for the game or other people's hard work, and I can't deal with that.

I've been in the situation where my models have gotten broken. I don't make a big fuss about it, because most of the time the model has broken along a joint which is easy to repair - i.e. an arm or backpack falls off, and all I have to do is glue it back on and maybe touch up the paint job. By the way, Saint Celestine's sword arm just LOVES to fall off, as does the occasional Battle Sister's backpack. I even had a Hammerhead break apart, and it broke along the parts where it would normally be glued anyways - although one of the engine pods broke off with the little tab that holds it on, so I had to fix that pod in place by gluing it to the hull.
Admittedly, I only play at home with my mom these days, and she's quite respectful of my models, so it's always been an accident. I've seen her do weird things, though - like recently I had a unit of Howling Banshees on the ground level of of a ruined building, and she moved them out from under it by cupping a hand and pushing them along in a pile. I kinda stared, both stunned and in horror, praying that none of their arms would break off. Fortunately, none did, but if it had, I would have repaired it myself. I am not looking forward to the first time my Exorcist will inevitably fall to the floor, but I hope it'll be my accident and not hers, so I can't possibly get upset with her about it - though I do tend to cool off rather quickly and go back to my usual friendly demeanor, after a night's sleep at the longest.
I do have some memories I'm not proud of, where I've taken one of my brother's models and cut off its legs or feet - honestly, I don't even remember WHY I did that, but I wish I hadn't. If he still played these days, I'd probably buy him a replacement model next time I'm at GW, or give him one of mine.
But if someone were being very rough with my models, I probably just wouldn't let them touch my minis. When they'd offer to move my models for me, I'd politely decline and move them myself.
And some people just aren't used to their own strength, particularly younger people. When I was somewhat younger than I am now, I liked to glomp people - basically a tackle-hug. I still wasn't used to my own weight, since I'd been fairly unsociable for the previous few years and not very affectionate. Because I wasn't used to my own weight, I didn't know that it was hurting people to glomp them, emotionally at least. Intellectually I knew, because they'd tell me, but I'd still do it. Now I've gotten more than a bit heavier thanks to my meds, so I can't move as fast as I used to be able to, so it's not an issue - though some people don't like how tightly I hug them, so sometimes I need to be reminded to hug more gently.
That doesn't really excuse being destructive towards one's own minis, though.

Amen to that. If a piece breaks off that's easily repairable, I don't' make too much of a fuss. But say if ohhh Ahriman's staff is snapped in two due to some careless twit, that'll be money out of their pocket. Just recently I was at my local hobby shop playing a game when someone decided to help themselves to my out of play models on the side, picking up and inspecting seemingly every one of them (they were plastic, which I worry less about). Same goes the other way, I'll always ask before touching, or simply just leaning in and getting a closer look. I generally don't even touch another players model during a game unless they tell me to move it for them. Courtesy is free, models aren't.

I would be really pissed if it was an expensive metal model that is a drunk amn's work in finecast. Like a Terminator with a bendy chest. You can't replace it in metal.
A guy I know actually keeps a small mallet with him. He makes it very clear.
Topuch his stuff and a model of yours goes bye-bye. Break something and you have a choice. Either lose your prized model or buy him a nerw one. If it is expensive you do both. Sopmeone made the mistake of dropping his Thunderhawk and it smashed to pieces. Poor bloke lost his Reaver to that hammer. And hqad to buy him a new Thunderhwk.
After that that particular store banned him from life and made him pay for the reaver titan. Or else they phoned the police.

True accident? "Can ya hand me that?" -slip- "His superglue-d arm fell off"...Well, OK, no structural damage to the model, big deal. 15 second fix. Be a bit more careful eh?
Lack of respect, slamming things around, etc? There's your warning. Round two, assuming theres no actual damage, I pack up and find another opponent.
Breakage along with the above? If it's superglued, Game over, I find another player, but that's the end of it. If it's actual structural damage to the model? Ok. You see that shelf over there? You can go buy me a replacement, or I can bring this up to the FLGS owner, resulting in your being gone. You claim poverty? Alright, FLGS Owner it is. We can arrange for you to be playing here again when you bring in the cash to fix what you broke, or bring the model in with you.

I once went to my FLGs, and I brought along all of my Death Guard models in a figure case. I quickly found a match, and began deploying my men (I rolled a 5, he rolled a 2). So, this little kid comes up, and starts looking at my models. I tell him that he could look at the models, but not touch them. While I looked away, he must have picked it up, and dropped it. As he bent down to pick it up, he clumsily stepped on it. When he refused to pay for it, I got the store manager, who then asked him to pay for it. So, he told the kid to pay for it, but the kid said he had no money. (And this was a Chaos Lord with a Forgeworld Injured Death Korps on the base. So, the store manager had the dad pay for it. I have now learned to never let a kid near my stuff.

There are accidents ( which are ok and forgivable )
Then there are negligence ( a few warnings depends on how expensive the broken thing is )
Then there are the "i dont give a ****" attitude that contributes to a tragedy awaiting to happen....
I would make it clear only i can touch them.

I saw a really calm bloke when his crisis suit got wrecked once, but it was such freakish circumstances that it was understandable not to be too grumpy. My friend was measuring his broadside's range (it was tau v tau) and as he let the measuring tape back in slowly, he lost control accidentally. As it zipper back, it picked up his fully converted (beautifully converted) crisis suit by the magnetic dot on its shoulder, and whisked it off the table and into the air.
Stunned silence followed before I started laughing. maybe not appropriate, but it was so cool. They CAN actually fly! Anyway my mate apologized like there was no tomorrow and the guy was cool with it, arms and legs died (he was a quadruple amputee, the crisis suit) but it was all fine because of the plain bad luck of the scenario.
Serious, that suit missed 4 buildings it could have got knocked against and fallen back onto the table from about a 10cm drop. Ah well, such is life. The guy was a top bloke about it

Several of my models have 'fragile as hell' hovering over them in big neon letters.
It's usually these that Gamestore Kid and his brother Mayhem Clumsy like to pick up
I was in a game a while back, when the Dubious Duo above picked up my Nightbringer (he of the ever-falling off arms) and the other guys forgeworld Nurgle prince (i think.. Forgeworld and rotty chaotic something anyway).
Their Mom was standing back a bit, watching and making a very mild frowny face.. AT US .. For asking them to put the models down, as we were in the middle of the game.
Then one of them tossed the nurgle guy back on the table. It survived reasonable well, as it hit the table not the floor. the other plunked my nightbringer down hard, snapping both arms off from the force of the 'touchdown' (he actually said 'touchdoooowwwnnn' as he did it...)
I went over to the Mom, whose answer was 'boys will be boys'..
I then asked if she was aware just how expensive the 'toys' were?
Night bringer is 35 dollars, and your kids just broke him. I would like them to replace it.
She wasn't happy, but agreed that they should replace it out of their pocket money, while whining about how she couldn't believe a little metal ghost would cost that much (even after i showed her the price tag).
Then my friend politely informed her that his model, mercifully undamaged beyond a little pain touchup, wasi imported at great expense from the UK, and cost a gruesome sum.
She beat the kids out of the door, looking over her shoulder to make sure he wasn't pursuing her for recompense. Automatically Appended Next Post: In short ' touch my stuff and i will chew you out for it. Break it and you've bought me another one.'

We have a friend who routinely breaks models. Thnkfully mostly his, but sometimes other peoples.
I remember my brother making a city board, but he hadn't quite finished the asphalt roads, so they were just sealed once by the time we played on it. He told him to take it easy on the roads, since they still needed some work. He proceeded to pretend his tanks were matchbox cars, and pushed them along the roads, digging up huge trenches in the road.
We never used the board again.

Not the affectionately-named, "Chibihawk." The proper Thunderhawk.
Not that I'd condone breaking someone else's minis, especially not deliberately. I just thought it should be cleared up. ^_^

Im generally really laid back. I dont mind if people pick up my models, look at them, nerd over em. Its ok to me cause i put alot of work into the conversions and painting of alot of my armys. My Forgeworld avatar? Took me 3 days to build his base and paint him and get him sync'd up just right? I have NO problem if another hobbiest picks him up. Most people who play this game have good respect for others models. However....Little kids? Jerks? they ASK first. If they display proper respect, they can inspect. if not, i generally ask kindly not to touch.
If someone breaks one of my models? it really depends? i have had a few break in the past and out comes the glue/accellerent or i set it aside and let it dry. No harm really done, its just a model. if its completly unfixable or unconvertably fixable....then i ask to help me replace it.
if anyone ever did something on purpose? just straight out im going to break it with my hammer cause you did an acciedental thing, or i dont like it its not "Fluffy" enough, or hey! im a jerkbag and i break yo models "insert interent meme here"....well a mans patience can only go so far before they find out what layers of pain they can stand before screaming like a squeemish child.
Its never gone that far, and i have only ever had one model replaced. I do stress to parents of kids and other people the cost of things before they "play" with them or inspect them (like my titans and Avatar and whatnot) so sometimes the "Pricetag" and where it comes from is enough to detour them from picking it up if they are nervous.
but again i have had no real problems

If it was a genuine accident and it's fixable (and it always is), breaking a model isn't a big deal and is business as usual, seems to happen every couple months. Never seen anything truly harmed enough in anything that wasn't repairable or fixed with a few minutes of painting.

There's a guy in our group who is notorious for breaking my models and my terrain. It's not intentional by any means, but it always seems to happen, so much so that it's become a running joke.
It could be worse though. He could've set my kitchen on fire...

If it is a major repair that would require repainting or a whole new model, you better get your wallet out...
You make em buy you a paint pot?
But I've had a little kid break my vendetta. He somehow managed to break the tail off. I was angry but didnt go ape gak on him. I looked it over, saw it could be repaired, then told him that if he touches my models again without asking he buys it if he breaks it. And it wasn't some minor scratch. I had to work a while to fix it. But broken models comes with the game. If its truly an accident and the guys remorseful, then i'll let bygones be bygones.
