It really depends on how bad it was, if somebody hit it with their elbow and it fell on the ground by accident or something similar i would not be angry most things can be glued back together. But if somebody picked up and smashed my model or something i would be rather angry and depending on the price on the model i would no allow him to leave without some sort of payment. And if it was some dunce kid touching my models without asking i would grab it out of their hands and tell them they cant touch it and keep and eye on them after. I did this once and mother angrily stormed over and was trying to suss me out, asking me why i care about these "toys" so much, then i told her the cost and she clamed up fast and left. I hate kids so much sometimes most of the time the ones who do this are the ones covered in spit, chocolate or who knows what else. And that guy with the hammer what a loser, if he went after my models i would remove that hammer from his hand as quickly and painfully as possible (didn't take martial arts when i was younger for no reason). I am glad i don't have people like this in my area.

I would be fine with him throwing his models around I mean if he breaks them then there his not mine. The only time a friend has broken one of my models was when we where both starting I had glued the stand to my D-fishand my friend dropped a tape measure on it as he was measuring it so I just drilled a hole in it and put the stand in but that didn't work so I just use the landing gears.

Well, it really isn't. My Wolf Lord is Studio Mcvey's Ruby, modified with a actual Space Wolf on the base for WYSIWYG.
Because of the fact that it's a girl with cleavage riding a dinosaur, everyone wants to grab it, touch it, play with it, and hold it. During a small tournament, I was in CC with a unit of Slannesh Deamonettes, and the entire damned thing stopped to watch the "catfight". Some idiot grabbed it by the rider, and it fell to the ground. It didn't break, and I bopped him over the head with my rulebook.

i dunno. i had my realm of battle board at a tourney, and i made it very clear that if it was being used i was one of the players on it. i had no problem rearranging it to create a diffrent layout and gave priority terrain setups to my opponents (other tables were cloth over folding tables) however i had one rule: no drinks on or near my table. this one kid came by with his open coke can... i asked him nice to not be drinking over my table. he went away, came back 30 minutes later and before i could remind him he spilled a small amount on one of the corners. easilly cleaned up, i reminded him again "please no drinks near my table" - guess what not 20 minute later hes back....and this time spilled half his can over a good 1/4 of the board. needless to say his parents ended up buying the replacment. although he did get a nice although rather coke stained battle board out of the deal. i have no clue what condidtion its in now... but my new one now stays at home and away from public events.
edit: should clarify... i usually ask people not to touch my models/terrain/table unless i ok it first. if someone dosent ask and touches or bumps whatever they get a friendly request to be cautious or take drink etc elsewear. but after that - you break/damage it you replace it. the only exception i can really handle is if its a young kid who dosent know better. but even then... as a parent myself i believe you should keep your kids away from other peoples &*^$ especially if its something breakable.

Same applies to my country I have seen people engaging in a fistfight because someone broke the other guy's model's arm, intentionally or not.
I think that if the other guy does minor damage, eg. scratching the paint, breaking a minor joint etc. and he does that purely by accident, I would just forgive him and move on. However, if he does something like the OP said (throwing my larger models out of the window) I would ask him to pay for it. If he would refuse to pay, I would probably report to the police (if the model was really expensive). After all, property is property, no matter what. As for the dude (or dudes) with the hammers/mallets... Take a deep breath, move out of moms basement, drop the oreos and take a good long look at yourself. You have brought a hammer to a game store to threaten people with so that they don't touch your toys. Better yet, stay in moms basement and die sad and alone staring longingly at your daemonettes in hopes that one day you'll meet a girl just like them.
Agreed. If someone did that to my models he would soon find out that the hammer he was holding is hacking into his brains at an alarming speed.

violence against model breakers i dont agree with. however as i said... you bust up my stuff i WILL make you pay for it. one way or another. to date its happend twice where that was required... once with my battle board, and prior an old DE ravager that a loosing opponent struck and broke when he threw his landraider at it. mind you that replacment was store owner enforced. i didnt really have to do anything.
the end result is that if i spend money and time assembling and painting something, if someone else damages it - they are responsible for righting the situation. either by replacment, repairing or whatever depending on the situation.

I'm usually pretty lenient. Part of the hobby is to gawk at other bpeople's cool stuff, so I'm happy when they gawk over mine.
I've had people drop my Obliterators and metal Daemon Prince and send the pieces flying. If they are good modelers, I make them glue it back together/fix the damage. Otherwise, I do it and make fun of them/chastise them, depending on the level of destruction.

ya, i am generally the guy who breaks the stuff, so i have a policy for when i do it.
1. Is it a join-break? if so ill fix it.
2. Is it a major break? if so ill fix it, and pay 20% of the cost of the model as compensation.
3. Is it not repairable? Ill buy a new model, plus give my painting service free of charge (optional).
4. Is the person a better painter than me? Ill buy the new model, and pay an extra 20% of the cost (up to 30$) for the lost paints.
I also find it is far more difficult to help someone repair the damage I have caused if they are a D**k about it.

I'm not that protective, accidents happen. I tend to be as careful as possible with other people's minis, but if I were to break one, I'd happily pay for it! As for people breaking my models, I don't mind too much, but if somebody put a foot through a stompa I'd expect some form of compensation If they accidentaly step on a boy, its alright, I break my own models enough as it is XD I'll let it slip, but if they arse about with them...

I'm not sure what asking people to pay for the model achieves, how often is that really necessary? Most metal models are multi-part and break into these components. They don't need more than a bit of straightening out and re-gluing. Plastic models tend to bounce, resin models can crack, which is rather bad.
If you play in a public place like a shop accidents will happen. Assuming they are just accidents you should suck it up and repair the model.
Only if irreparable damage is caused and there's gross stupidity or maliciousness involved should you get angry or start demanding recompense. Most of the time to be so confrontational would be needlessly escalating a situation in which no harm was meant.
Most of the time people should only handle their own figures unless told otherwise, but in a shop you get ignorant kids. That's what you get in shops that sells stuff to kids. If that's not a risk you're prepared to take I seriously suggest finding somewhere to play that better regulates the sort of people allowed near the tables. It will save a lot of aggro than trying to shout at some kid's mother to buy you new models.

Sure, a £3 Bolter marine box will fix up a broken Tac Marine, but when it is a £960 Manta, lets say, which is going to be the star attraction wherever you take it, well, then we will just see how well you suck it up when a wing catches on someones jacket.

Yes, stuff like that gets broken down the shop all the time. Did you see what I said about "irreparable" damage? Most damage can be easily repaired, even metal figures. Rare is the time when a drop will destroy a figure beyond repair meaning a replacement will need to be bought.

If you break my models, even by accident... It would depend on the damage. If it's just an arm or something that comes off, then I'll just fix it. If it's bigger than that, I'll have you buy me a new model. If you are being a jerk about it, my clan will eat you alive.
That being said, if you take a hammer anywhere near my models, I'm pulling a handgun on you.
Okay, seriously now, I won't use a gun (it would be overreacting, I don't have a licence yet and the store doesn't allows firearms anyways) but youre getting hurt. Bad. In ways that would make a Haemonculus feel sick.

I can tell anyone here that if someone picked up my Stompa without permission and dropped it and broke it, i'd expect some compensation.
It is just not the cost of the Stompa, but the paints, the extras that went into conversions and time to build and paint it.

Usually a broken bit is ok,as long as it can be glued back, but if one "part" breaks in two(eg,Lucius' whip breaks of at his hand),then it's a new model or the money up front.
And if I'm really upset about it,it's a good slap for dropping the model to begin with, and a Libre Choatica complete edition to the face if you break something I loved beond repair.

Would all depend on the level of damage. If it is a minor break then no harm no foul. Apologize profusely. I also make sure to *ask* before picking up minis that belong to other people. It is a common courtesy. Some people just don't like others messing with their stuff. Very rare that someone says no, but it makes people happy when you ask first.
If it is a major break and very much my fault I will offer to replace what I destroyed. If someone else did it to one of my models, especially by just grabbing it off the table without permission I would expect them to pay for replacements as well. If they refuse then a stomping with steeltoed boots is in order. If you don't have the money to replace anything you damage don't go messing with other people's stuff! Same thing as applies in a store with fragile items on sale. If you can't afford to buy it then DON'T TOUCH IT!!
Of course circumstances come into the equation too. I will be less cranky and more forgiving with friends who wanted to check out my cool model and it got broken. After all bad things can happen and they are wholly accidental. Not forgiving at all to idiots who grab something off my table in the middle of a game without asking and then proceed to break it, damage its paint job, etc. If that is you be ready to pay up or there WILL be pain involved. As a 6'2" 220lb volunteer fire fighter I can certainly dish out pain when I need/want to. Generally I don't need/want to, but can certainly get the job done if necessary.

Actually it would be aggrevated assault and arrest would depend on the level of damage. You break bones and cause injuries severe enough that a hospital is required you deserve to go to jail and you likely will unless it is a first offense and then probation is more likely. You give someone an old school ass whupping arrest is unlikely; jail would be even more unlikely.

Most people I game with know better than to touch each others' models. If you see someone's boogerhook creeping towards your models, a stern "Don't touch that" is usually enough to stop them in their tracks.
It never gets to the point where you need to intervene as long as you are stern in your warnings. They know that if you pick someone's model up and its arm breaks off, then you're probably going to pick them up by their arm and break it off.

i actually agree with wowsmash and quite amused by all this tough talk. Since there is nearly nothing that can't be repaired on this hobby no matter if it's a tactical marine or a titan by a fall. If it gets stomped or malleted to doom than it is ofcourse another story.
Your model shattered to pieces, well it was the same way you bought it so it can obviously be repaired, the reasonable thing to do here is asking for a repair and not the cost of the model since that is just a low life act similar to ambulance chasing. Only if the guy is incapable of repairing or the damage is overwhelming any authority will grant youa replacement or the cost.
And for the lucious example , i mean really a broken whip and you ask for a new model ? The only thing you would be getting from is a packet of glue and you know what i will even glue it for you as a bonus.
