Yes, I think that has to be the only way it can be handled - like you have pointed out, logically it makes absolutely no sense at all.

I think to be honest there probably won't be any mention of it again. "Things are not always what they seem" is just another way of saying "no comment", and it's amazing how many people didn't even pick up on the howler in the Outcast Dead.

But then again, 'the warp did it' was the premise for Horus turning against the Emperor (and essentially the creation of the entire 40k universe), or in other words "I was stabbed by a magic sword, now I'm all evil, like". So, perhaps it was unreasonable to expect an underlying current with, you know, real characters and events which can be related to.

But it blows, I guess I am wanting to much from this series about the most definitive series of events to happen in the history of Warhammer 40,000.

I should just be glad that we have them at all and accept that a few cop outs are going to be a given ... grumble.

Some more delightful art now, fresh from the warped mind of Mr. Jon Sullivan.

A further snippet from the "Siege of Castellax" -- the cover shown earlier isn't from a finished version t'would seem, the final version being "less washed out".
.. looked cracking as was to me anyway !

And a peek at art for " Neferata- Time of Legends " as well.

His site is well worth a look at, some great pieces.

Balance wrote:For Alpha Legion, my personal theory is that...

Spoiler:

They were given (in 'Legion') a choice between A and B. A being 'Side with the Emperor, see humanity become a plague on the universe" and B "See humanity turn on itself and burn out".

They chose C. They're portrayed as paranoid, untrusting, and sneaky at the best of times, I can't see them accepting an alien cabal's message even with the glowy-psychic-light-show. bit. They care about some goal that is neither of the above, although they're pretending to support B because it allows them to be in position to do what they think is the right thing.

Part of me would like to see them come out as the architects of a potentially better future post-Emperor. Part of me assumes that things aren't going to go well, as no one in the setting is really allowed to be happy, not for long.

We're on the same page, Balance!

I can't see the Legion accepting ANYTHING at face value from a bunch of shifty Xenos Psykers.

We'll see, I suppose...

I think it would make sense that perhaps the 'baby staplers' are not exactly the true 'inner core' of the Legion, or have (this being 40k) ended up in power after a mishap threw a wrench into the very long-range plan. Could make for an interesting book or trilogy as...

Spoiler:

..the 'Pro-Humanity' Alpha Legion has to basically turn their own tactics on themselves. How do you subvert an entire legion that is paranoid and busy with their own schemes? I'd expect it to end with, at best, the vague idea that the Alpha Legion sees a new golden age, in a couple more millenniums, once the Emperor is finally removed from play, several Xenos are finally wiped out, etc.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

I was thinking along the same lines, and that was before I read the story about them in "The Primarchs".

I still have some problems with the directions they seem to be going in though... But it should be a fun ride!

Just wondering Ken, in what novels do you like the depiction of the Alpha Legion? Legion (<3) of course, but are there any others? I thought Deliverance Lost did a pretty good job.

Definitely interested to see what this 'direction' of the Legion you're describing is; is it something I should've picked up on already, or something that'll be enlightened in The Primarchs?

OK, OK - point taken! This is my favorite Legion though, obviously!

So yes, "Legion" is great and added a nice layer of mystery and depth to what was in danger of becoming a one note thing.

Subsequent writers haven't really followed through on that potential.

"Deliverance Lost" was decent but still felt a bit flat and empty.

I think I might be bound for disappointment unless Dan or Aaron writes about them.

To answer your other question, yes you'll need to read "The Primarchs" to get the latest scoop.

I'm still undecided on how good I think it is, but a lot depends on where the story takes the Legion next...

I genuinely don't think I was trying to make a point tbh man. Although, I was worried that something like this might be the case:
I think I might be bound for disappointment unless Dan or Aaron writes about them.

Which I can fully understand - and may even be the same - but maybe that's not... 'healthy'?

"Deliverance Lost" was decent but still felt a bit flat and empty.

I think I agree, maybe that's just because they were playing 2nd fiddle and you didn't really get much insight into the Legion, just their actions - which were just as sneaky as usual?
Almost ridiculously sneaky though, I really wasn't sold on the face-swap thing myself.

To answer your other question, yes you'll need to read "The Primarchs" to get the latest scoop.

For those of us in the UK, it might be of interest to know that Waterstones is selling The Primarchs early, and actually offering a discount if you buy it from their online store. I picked up my copy yesterday, and have just finished The Reflection Crack'd on the bus journey back from college. I was shocked to discover that Fulgrim...
Spoiler:

...'s flagship, Pride of the Emperor, is noosperically equipped. Having re-read Mechanicum only a couple of weeks ago, in which it is stated that the noosphere is still experimental and has only been introduced to three Martian forges at the time of the Heresy, I am confused as to just how a Legionnes star ship would find itself in possession of such technology.

Also, the whole twist at the end where it turns out Fulgrim wasn't possessed. I didn't actually expect that. I just assumed that the exorcism would fail and the III Legion would learn to give with having a possessed Primarch. So, congratulations to Mr McNeill for surprising me, boo to Mr McNeill for a potential continuity error.

Edited when I noticed that I'd managed to put the spoiler tags around my opening statement by accident, and leave the spoiler unspoilered. Oopsies.

Or.. Graham McNeill is horrible about keeping everything in one timeline, for example, referring to Tallarn as a desert way before it is virus bombed into one.

Uhm, I was actually about half way through Fallen Gods when I decided to go out and get EVERY book in the Horues Heresy series. I even got my hands on Aurelian and Promethean Sun. And I'm sure that the minute I see The Primarchs and Fear to Tread on the book shelf at my local GW, I'll but them. Started reading the HH series (in order) back in Febuary, half way through Descent of Angels now...

I've now listened to the first half of Butcher's Nails (which the BL website still insists is not out until June) while walking the dogs. I now see what Mr S8n meant when he said that Angron sounds like Gotrek

Orkmoticons aside, the voice acting for Mr Angry, while certainly not how I'd imagine him, isn't half bad. Kharn and Mrs Captain-of-the-Conqueror are also pretty good. Lorgar's voice didn't gel with my perception of what he should sound like at all: since The First Heretic, I've imagined him as having the highest voice out of all the Primarchs, so I'm not too keen on his deep, regal representation, which is more akin to what I'd expect from Dorn or maybe Guilliman. Others' opinions may vary greatly,of course. It's also good to see that the repertoire of sound effects for these audio dramas is slowly growing - it really makes a difference, and enhances the atmosphere of the piece. I've mixed feelings on the chainblade-cutting-into-flesh sound effect though: while at first it made me cringe with horror, as Angron gets a bit more gratuitous with his axe, and we get nearly a dozen chopping noises in quick succession, it just sounds like he's throwing water balloons

My final thought for the nonce: I now want to see a picture of Angron dressed as Mr Burns, crying out "Smithers, release the Hounds!"

"I reached down through my trousers, and groped for something concealed in my sock... it was my foot."

I lurk, therefore I am. DOOM DOLPHINS!

Or maybe all the jackasses you see walking around in late autumn/early spring wearing sandals and shorts all moved to Tallarn?

I'm not that concerned about mistakes like that to be honest, or the complaints about so-and-so wearing a type of armour that he shouldn't have been. Far bigger an issue for me is stuff like the timeline mistake in 'Outcast Dead', which actually damages the overall plot.

The HH series is the only reason I got back into 40K (and reading for pleasure). So, I am really hoping it doesnt start to get boaring for me.

I am waiting on the Primarchs. I could pre-order but $13 to ship a $8.99 book to America, I mean, thats just a bummer. I have Void Stalker and Architect of Fate to keep me occupied till then.

Not really loving the sound of whats happening in in the Alpha Legion short in the book 'Primarchs.' I most definitely have a place in my heart for special forces space marine commandos. (still cant finish the 'hunt for volorduous' (spelling??))
