Hey guys,

I'm at work, so I only have a second to post something real quick instead of searching frantically, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any tutorials to help create scratch built TL autocannon arms for dreadnoughts. As much as I love forgeworld, I would much rather have something much cheaper, (especially considering I have a whole crapload of autocannons laying around from IG heavy weapons teams.)

Thanks in advance!

They probably fight on an AOBR dread. the posts are smaller. Besides, it's an easy conversion. $10 bucks for 2 is a smokin deal. One FW arm is 7.5 pounds. Whats that like 12 bucks?

Yeah, but shaving and gluing/magnetizing is no big deal, if you want it swappable all you have to do is drill where the peg was set a magnet flush and set a magnet in the post in the arm.

And if I may point out the tutorial listed above doesn't come with arms that will fit on the pegs either.

YMMV

How are your experiences with the White Strong Flexible material from Shapeways?
IMO the material way under par of everything GW/ FW produces, only Transparent ultradetail is IMO comparable and that is expensive again...

It's not FW resin that's for sure. They are 2 different animals.

All in all it is better than what I expected, a little love to get it right, no more than I would put into a forge world cast though maybe even less.

I bought 3 arm sets and well they actually came out really well, but I took a toothbrush to them with simple green then with distilled water. Paint takes to them a little funny, they primed just fine, but I guess due to how they are formed metallic look EXTRA SHINY on them to dull it back down I did a heavy heavy heavy handed wash with some badab black.

Cons - How "powdery" they feel and how metallics take to them...
Pros- Price, ease of ordering, look, not having to bend warped resin...

If this puts it in perspective I am looking at ordering 3 more sets for my 'ardboys list.

Some bad pictures of my half way work in progress display board and half painted models will give you a feel for how they turned out:

I've seen a lot of people use the autocannons from the Aegis defense line.

Bitspudlo has some.

Hmm, strange, for me all WSF prints were almost unusable because of the highly visible print lines.

Only place I saw print lines was on the barrels they were extremely minor. Less than the difference between using a hobby knife to remove a mold line and a a file to remove a mold line. As soon as I primed couldn't see them any more. And no I didn't lay on the prime super thick. YMMV, I've only got 1 order from them, and maybe it was the difference in how the 3d image was made?

bit for cheap? Since GK came out, the price of IG autocannons has gone through the roof. That used to be the cheap way, you buy 4 autocannons, glue them to each other, but now that is too expensive, unless you find some friend in real life who will give them to you for a deal.

If you're wanting cheap, then pick up some after market barrels, such as one of the Old Crow sets and use plasticard or some other Dread arms to attach them to. You migth need to do some finessing on other dread arms to make them properly RFAC-ey, but it can't be that hard.

As an added crazy coincidence that base plate fits right into the door frame on the deck of a Chimera, if you wanted some auto cannon armed flak wagon variant

I ordered a set of these recently, and a few days after the order was placed I got a message from bitspudlo, they said they were having casting troubles, and due to the delay would send me out an extra kit. Well I got the parts yesterday, the casting quality is crap, and there was no extra bits as he said there would be...I have been working with resin kits now for 10+ years, and I think the only salvageable parts on the bits I got, are the "block" shoulder parts, I will probable cut the barrels off and scratch build some.

Sadly, I must agree. My dread arms from them were definitely usable, but not great. Had to use green stuff, which I suck at, to sort of make them square and level. Not up to the standards one would expect from a supposedly professional product.

I am tempted to try the crazy 3-d printing shapeways stuff just because the idea of it is so cool. If that isn't the greatest, I will understand since the technology is so new. Poor resin casting in not understandable or acceptable.

A popular method seems to be getting the lascannon arm and the missile launcher arm and attaching barrels from the IG Autocannons, FWIW by the time you do that its much cheaper to get the FW arms unless you already had a lascannon arm and missile launcher arm.

IMHO if you are going to go through all that trouble to get IG Autocannon arms, then you may as well go for the bare arm look, which I think looks better anyway. Silly to buy 4 autocannons AND 2 Dread arms, when you can make a kick as dread with just the 4 autocannons.

Cheapest way is to use the lascannon and missile launchers arms you get from buying a normal dreadnought. Chop up the lascannon and don't put the missile "plate on the ML arm. Then buy yourself some cheap plastic tanks or sets of green army men with autocannon accessories. Chop up the autocannons from said toys.

This one cost me $2 an autocannon:
