My question is this: How do I paint this red. I think I prime black, base red gore, wash red gore to make a clean coat. Then shade with one coat 50/50 red gore/blood red, then blood red highlights, then fiery orange highlights on top. Afterwards I would take a dremel and scar the plastic. Then I color in the scarred areas black. Wash dark flesh done deal. Does that sound right?

Sounds like some very extreme highlighting but it sounds right. Maybe for the cracks a 50/50 mix of baal red and badab black instead of straight black

I'd say mechrite red+ 50/50 of blood and blazing, then a 25/75 of the same thing drybrushed all over that, and then possibly a 50/50 fiery and sunburst extreme highlight. Wash slighty with devlan were necessary....
At least that's my take. Scar the plastic before you start painting. Saves time.
Might need some red gore in certain places. Maybe add it to the original mix?

Is one wash of devlin enough to cover that rich dark color in the cracks and postmarks? What do you think of a starter of red gore?

Here is what i do for a dark red.
Prime black.
Scab Red
Devlan mud wash
Scab red drybrush
high light of mechrite red
extreme highlight of blood red(very thin and barely noticable
even extremer highlight of blazing orange.
like this

I wouldn't really advise that, your red looks dull, dark and drab. This is because you prime in black, this is wrong because red has a very low opacity, so it will take many coats to achieve an actual red (your red is the typical dark red achieved from priming black and not using enough thin coats)
Because red has such a low opacity, it is a bad idea to use pigments with high opacity, almost every white has a very high opacity, which is why most reds highlighted with white turn out chalky or rather pink.

Why is it wrong to prime black when using red? What about when you want a muted red? Hell, I can even produce non-muted red when I prime black.
All from a black primer. Steps:
1) Prime black.
2) Basecoat Scorched Brown.
3) Layer Bestial Brown
4) Layer 50/50 Red Gore and Blood Red
5) Wash with Baal Red
6) Layer Blood Red
7) Highlight with Orange (I actually use Cadmium Orange from Grumbacher)
8) Was with Baal Red if highlight is too stark.
Sorry, it just irks me when someone says "this is wrong" when clearly it's a preferential choice. It's not mandated that all red should look bright and highly saturated (what if you're aiming for a muted, drab look?), and even if you want bright red, it's not "wrong" to prime black.

I find mechrite red a great base for all my reds, from there I just work my way up through they layers. I will say that I find P3's red paints to be superior to Vallejo's and GW's but that's preferential of course

If you want bright reds over a black prime, just use mechrite red. It's thoroughly bright, and it makes it easier to paint over with colours. Automatically Appended Next Post: heartserenade wrote:

He's not saying "don't do that at all". He's telling the OP that this process isn't going to replicate the model in the first post.
Personally, I've had little success with blood red unless I mix it with a foundation (like macharius solar orane, tausept ochre or mechrite). It has this weird 'oily' sort of sheen to it, which I can't stand. Plus, the color is a little out of place in the spectrum of GW colors...

Yeah, black prime is good for a very muted deep red, but what the model is painted like looks to be a white undercoat, or a preshaded base. You can always base black, especially on small parts, but the red the op wants in my opinion would be best achieved with a light grey or white, especially en masse.

I think that you'll get as many recipes as posters in this thread. ^^
I paint red severall ways, but generally it's simply a variation of this :
1) Prime black
2 ) Scorched brown (it allows the red to cover the black MUCH better)
3) Scab red
4) Red gore
5) Blood red
6) Blazing orange on angles as final highlight
And you get a strong red on a black undercoat. Looks like this, on my Killa kans for exemple :

I use dragon red primer from the army painter as my base, then wash with devlan mud and start highlighting with blood red, then i add some blazing orange and continue the highlights until i'm using pure blazing orange, then I add a small amount of vomit brown and finish of the very edges with pure vomit brown and wash the whole thing with baal red wash.
hope you get some good ideas from the responses here, they are all good ways to paint red, just keep trying until you find a method that feels comfortable to your style.

I've done that before. Totally ruins metals, but it gives the red a great tone. Same with thinned down asurmen blue.
