Subject: It Came From The Warp! ~ Starfarer's Death Guard and Nurgle Daemons
This is my project log for all my various creations. For almost 2 years now I have been exclusively focused on skirmish gaming, and more specifically Necromunda. While I may return to some Necromunda, or =I=munda modelling (and possibly even some Blood Bowl - or a crazy 40k version of Blood Bowl I've been contemplating) for the time being I am returning to 40k, which I have decided to dive back into with 6th Edition on the horizon.
It's a somewhat odd feeling to starting fresh after having sold all my previous armies years ago after a break from the hobby. I considered quite a few armies including Dark Eldar, Orks and Chaos Daemons but decided I needed to rebuild my old legion, the Death Guard. They are my all time favorite army in 40k and the temptation was just too great not to rebuild my old army. So this log will very much be a Death Guard 3.0 log, as it is my 3rd time to build a unique Death Guard army. What will be different from my previous armies is that I have set a list that I will build and not have much deviation from that. In the past I just built what I wanted without too much concern about building towards a certain list.
This serves two purposes for me, the first being that my friend and I are both rebuilding armies from scratch, so we've set a 1,500 point limit as a goal and the deadline is to have a fully painted 1,500 point army ready for play by the launch of 6th Edition this summer. Second, is that I'm also expecting a new Chaos codex some time in the next year, and I want to stick to a core army that shouldn't precipitate any big changes to my army when a new codex is released.
My army wil consist of the following:
Daemon Prince
Sorcerer
Greater Daemon
x2 Plague marine squads w/ rhino transports
x3 squads of lesser daemons
x4 Obliterators
and several Chaos Spawn. Yes, Spawn, I don't care if they are the worst unit in the game, I like them!
I also have a roughed up vindicator they may be requisitioned into service if points allow. Blight drones may be added after the first 1,500 points are completed, we will see.
The one hard and fast rule for this army is that it will consist entirely of plastic and resin. No metal models at all. Other than that my main goals are to step up my painting skills and try some new techniques. Oh, and finally make some plastic plaguebearers than I'm happy with. That's been a ongoing problem for me with my previous armies, and I plan to get it right this time!
The pics aren't the best but below you can see my pile 'o loot. This is everything I need for the units listed above minus one bits order I still need to make.
And here is an Ultraforge greater daemon I managed to snag on eBay the other week from an absolute steal. It is missing is horns and the mouth had a greenstuff tongue that appears to have been glued in the mouth. The stripping on the paint was a bit tough due to all the folds and other detail, so it's definitely going to need some more work, but I'm just happy to find one of these since they are no longer available for purchase.
That's all for now, but I'll probably begin work on the rhinos first, and get the daemon prince started in the near future.
Thanks for looking!

I'm really looking forward to what you do with that greater daemon. It's one of my favorite models, really. Huh, but there's nothing like having a list to build and a hard deadline to get it done by. I need to get 1500 points of Dark Eldar finished by (roughly) the end of April. I'll keep you motivated if you keep me going
Looking forward to updates!

Well, 500 posts and 4 years here at Dakka. If nothing else this should show just how lazy I am at posting, and at posting updates. Which makes this post all the more appropriate as I have at long last pulled my "Pimp My Wizard" entry out, and worked on it a bit. I was hoping to simply showcase the finished model for my 500th post, but after 2 days of passing up posting I decided to get it over with and show what little progress I've made!
I'm now roughly 7 months past the deadline on this. While I did manage to buy my first house, as well as remodel nearly the entire damn thing before moving in AND had my girlfriend move in,(which of course meant lots and lots of shopping trips on weekends which is a perfectly good waste of modeling time!) I think I've run out of excuses seeing as I'm building a 40k army currently. So excuses be damned, I'm going to finish this off, and with a bit of luck I'll beat Baiyuan to it, and get PDH off my back.
I finally got to mess with some liquid green stuff, which has taken a bit of getting used to. I do like it, but perhaps didn't have the magical qualities I imagined in my mind. There still a few bits to add on, but I have a pretty good idea of how I want it to look, so I should be ready for paint by the weekend!
Also, I thought this should be shared as it is probably the coolest thing I've seen in forever. A chaos marauder airbrushed on the side of a 70's Ford Van. Just another reason I love living in Austin.

I will be using the Forgeworld kits primarily; they are some of my absolute favorite models. Although I may convert some additional non-forgeworld plague marines as well.

It's great to see you working on the PMW model. I really like the layout of the bitz, as well as the execution of the conversion. Always reminded me of the Exploited skull, though the hair's backwards
Spoiler:
Anyways, can't wait to see paint on her.

YEAH! When you're done I will hunt Jackanory down.
If you beat Baiyuan I'll mercilessly rib him forever! But he has already done the hard work...all he has left is a little doggy....well a not so little doggy.
I'd forgotten how much I like your model, really think the las pistol arm is fantastic.

LOL... I agree! The smoothness and compatibility of the parts still is the highlight of this conversion. (crazy lil buzzsaw)... I'll be looking forward to the finished paintjob for it!
for overactive imaginations... PDH - ARE YOU SARAH CONNER?

Peter sent me a pm with the words "Is that the sound of a gauntlet being thrown down!!!!!! " and a link to this blog. Not that Peter's machinations could still surprise me, but staging such a rivalry just in order to make us finish our projects is almost cute. Pete, you're dakka's unasked for, but not unwelcome motivational coach.
So let's see, I'd basicly say Cadaver can't really beat me to it anymore, considering that my wizard itself is already finished. Though talking about my whole project I must admit there is a good chance Cody will beat me to it, since I'm currently involved in other projects. (namely painting my Remora and planning the conversion of my inquisitor's private Stormlord)
On the other hand lame excuses and subterfuge will never make me finish that project, so maybe this is just what I need.
It's on, Cody! It's on...
Oh before I forget, damn/thank you Peter!

You are something similar to batman. You're the DARK KNERD!
Jokes aside, that new flyer is nifty and I might be getting one some day, but I have very special plans for the I's ride, that couldn't be done on a dropship.
Also I've already put another 4h into Hope's conversion. I'm sure Cody will finish long before I'm even done sculpting, but any progress is better than none.

Not as much as I'd hoped, but just about ready for paint.
The skirmish gaming bug is biting after working on this mini, but I'm hoping I can stay focused on my Death Guard after I finish this. I have a pile of plastic bits just begging to be used for an all plastic Scavvy gang. One step at a time...

It's been longer than I expected to get back into the swing of things, but 6th Edition is here and I'm more excited than ever to get back into gaming.
I had planned to have much more done by now and be ready for gaming with the launch of 6th, but that has obviously not happened. However, I'm glad I waited in a way, because the inclusion of Allies is a massive shift in design philosophy for 40k, and for an old vet who started out in 2nd Edition in feels like a return to 40k's roots, and it is most welcome.
This had me working out new idea and especially working to include some Daemon allies with my CSM force. I just finished building the first model for the planned allied detachment, which is a Herald of Nurgle, which will be leading some plaguebearers. Since you can take two heralds for a single HQ slot, I plan on building a second one which will also be based off the Nurgle Lord plastic kit, but have plans to change the pose on that one a bit more dramatically to differentiate them.
I love the single sprue kits GW has been been doing for Warhammer Fantasy, and while I don't play Fantasy I've bought a few of the various kits they've released for converting into 40k models. I'm happy with how this one turned out, and I'm excited to start testing skin tone to use on this and the rest of my daemon allies.
More to come soon(hopefully )!

I haven't gotten the chance to read through the 6th edition rules, but I'm excited to see what's changed. Not being a vet as yourself, I only remember back to the later days of 4th edition, so second ed. is ancient history to me
It's a great idea (and opportunity, too) for the daemon detachment. The one-off fantasy character sprues have been done so well, and the nurgle lord might be my favorite. As a chaos lord, I'd say he needs more 40k on him, but as a herald, I'd say he looks perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing the other one

Thanks, I'm happy to finally convert this model. I actually have 4 of them, and was planning on using them as a base for Obliterators, but it didn't turn out as expected, so I scrapped the idea. Luckily, allies came to be so I knew had to use the Nurgle Lord model as the base for Heralds.
I hoping to test out some paint schemes soon. I need to buy some of the new paints for the skin tone I have planned, and I hope the new colors and names don't throw me off completely!
Here's the first Plague Marine squad I've built. I really like the Mk III bits, and managed to get enough for both my plague marine squads I currently have. They've got a number of possessed bits as well, and this should serve as a preview of things to come for the CSM portion of the army. I have strayed away from extensive mutations on my Death Guard in the past, but with this army incorporating a large number of daemons, and may in fact actually be run as a Daemon army with CSM allies in some cases, I wanted to have heavily corrupted marine models. The overall feel of the army should so a cohesion between the CSMs and Daemons, so they come across as a single army rather than an army with allies tacked on.

Looking good! Love the Nurgle lord's weapon swap as well! And seeing as how you're going primarily FW for your Death Guard... do you have a points max that you're aiming for?
Either way, keep it up! Looking forward to more!

I'm not 100% sure since there will be lots of Daemon allies, and I don't know how the new Chaos codex will look, but I probably won't do more than 3 squads of 7 plague marines. I had a hard time fitting more than that in my last 2,000 point army. I doubt I'll be playing games above 1750 or 1850 points but I'm guessing total army size will shoot up to 2,000+ points fairly quickly. Certainly won't let it get to the ~10,000 point level of my first DG army.

As usual I am quite bad at updating these things. I guess I'm usually too bust tinkering about with my bitz to stop and snap pictures, upload them, etc.,etc.
Anyway, I've got some fun stuff to share this time. Plastic plaguebearers! I picked up a box today from my FLGS and snapped a few pics of the sprues before getting down to building them.
And I've got a second squad of plague marines mostly finished. As mentioned before the guns and backpacks won't be added until after they've been painted.
The second Herald is also in the works, and really just trying to decide between a few final ideas for the head, and of course I will be adding some nurglings to bases, but then it's time to start painting. I've got to test some schemes, and get familiar with some of the new citadel colors I bought, so AoBR marines with serve as guinea pigs until I'm happy with a scheme. I'm going on vacation next week, but once I return I hope to start working on painting. With any luck I'll have everything painted by the time GW get around to releasing a new CSM codex.

Nice work so far. Any idea when you'll be getting some paint down on that herald?
I got a box of plague bearers too today...they are a nice kit. I like the one with an elephant nose...homage to John Merrick me thinks. I might at some point get my hands on another Nurgle Lord and do a head swap with a PB.

Really nice stuff. I've always fancied a Death Guard army, but at the moment I'm too busy being an Imperial fanboy to ever get around to the forces of chaos...
Still, I'll be watching this, as from what I’ve seen here and your other Plogs (as per links you posted) I can certainly say like your style.
It's also nice to have someone who updates their plog as infrequently as me!
