Let's see... 8 Zerkers, 15 CSM, 5 Possessed and a Rhino. All the bodies are interchangeable, so you can have any combination of Noise Marines, Plague Marines, Khorne Berserkers, Chosen, Possessed, or regular CSM you want, with bits left over to get you a Chaos Lord/Sorcerer. It's literally your entire core army in one box.

In short, you save scads of money.

Rule of Thumb.

If you like 75% of the content, then very yes. You get the final 25% for free.

If you dont really need or use majority of the force, then its pointless ( unless you plan on trading them )

Man, it looks like Games Workshop got rid of all their useful articles sometime in the last 6 months. There was one about making regular CSM conform more to their god. Nurgle was done by gluing splashes of GW basing sand to their armor, like a crusting disease. You can also drill small holes to represent battle damage or rot. There were a couple other techniques, not to mention for the other gods, but I guess they're lost to the aether now.

Yeah, I wonder... what did happen to all those articles? There were hundreds before and now they're all gone.

From what I hear its because of the 'new' paint range that GW are coming out with so they are updating them all.

I don't think its a great deal, but I don't use many regular CSM, even though I have a hundred or so.

For a starting force you'd be better off with a couple boxes of plague marines, and a vindicator kit. The vindy is a great kit, you can build a rhino and have enough parts left over to scratch build the tank very easily. Or just interchange the parts.

Add some oblits and a demon prince and you are off to a good start with no wasted models.

Granted you can use the stuff in the battleforce for "counts as" other things.

Eh, 2 boxes of Plaguers is 90 bucks plus a Rhino or two. Just using the CSM in the kit with a pack of metal special weapons is a better deal, before you even mention the 5 Possessed and 8 Berserkers. I don't think you can get a better deal with any other battleforce, really.

Depends. Kharn is a beatstick and really cheap. Sorcerers are probably a better platform for using Lash. Daemon Princes aren't as great as they used to due to the Warptime nerf, but they're still used. I'm hearing the best Daemon Prince build is now with Mark of Khorne.

i think a really good HQ and also a very cheap one for combination with the battle force box is the Chaos Lord or the Sorcerer. They have alot of options and are very points cheap, often you can get them close to named models for less points so it doesn't hurt when you loose them in battle as much.

I also really like Huron and Lucius as functional HQ's

As for models esthetic's and painting fun i am more partial to Bile and Typhus if your going for a 'look' army

But yeah for a start out CSM army i would go with a lord and only think about other options later when the army starts growing

Rogue Traders (Chaos Space Marines) 500pts
Warp Legions (Daemons) 2000pts

I bought the battleforce as my first 40k purchase and was quite pleased with it.

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts
2,000pts

I have spent the last 6-8 months starting up my first Warhammer 40k army (obviously chaos that's why I'm here).

I think that you might regret the purchase of the battleforce. I wish I had someone to tell me when I begun to pass on the regular csm models, and although I have only played a few games and do not own them personally, I have READ that the possessed are too inconsistent in their performance.

For it is only when you start to play that you realize how unfortunate it is not to have fearless on your troops.

My Khorne Berzerkers are my favorite unit because they have both the fearless and furious charge special rules (but you only get 8 of these in the battleforce :/ ). And I have heavily considered investing in the plague marines because they have the feel no pain (gold) and if I'm not mistaken fearless as well. You're going to need these buffers when you're fighting these freshly updated enemies (Tau & Grey Knights for example)

Regular CSM might be cheap, but there are better ways to distribute your valuable points... in my humble opinion sir.

On a side note... I think the Plague Marines are outrageously priced, even if they are finecast. And this is coming from a 26 old who has zero responsibility and money to burn! 7 dudes at $45? come on now GW

There is always a case to be made however for using cheap regular CSM units as battlefodder to outflank!

The value of the battleforce depends on what you wish to do with it.
If you don't plan to use Posessed ( cause they suck, badly ) and Berserkers ( quite good statwise but no melter and tricky to get into close combat so...meh ) then simply buying two
csm boxes + rhino would be a better deal ( 20 csm + rhino compared to 15 csm + rhino für 5€ less )

I bought it and I think it was a good purchase. You get a lot of models right out of the box that can easily be converted into a 500+ point army. There's a pretty good diversity of units too, so nothing is particularly boring to paint. I hear the plague marines aren't very good in games, however. I haven't used them, but what I can say is that they were pretty fun to paint, probably some of my favorite models to date.

im looking to build something around kharn maybe 800-1000 points to play with my friend and maybe a few games at the local place till i can get more units
