Subject: Re:The (Mad) Scientist and his Army of the Second Law: Beware of the Ankylosaurus!
Well, hands up all of you that have had a frozen shoulder... you can't, can you?!
At least not while you have a frozen shoulder.
I've found it's the other side of the coin to a dislocated shoulder:
1) it isn't sexy enough for cinema,
2) it won't help you escape a straight jacket, or anything really,
3) it's painful and really limits your arm movement.
4) turns out resting and limiting movement (to avoid pain) is the opposite of what you want to do,
5) you need to be stretching it to regain your range of motion
6) and it can take over a year to fully heal
So that put painting the Anky' on the back burner for a while.
Happy Christmas and New year DDakka.
Painting has resumed after 5 months.
Working on the "skin", picking out the texture and working up the eventual shading.
Next will probably some kind of wash to give some depth and warmth.
And then highlights.
See how it turns out and then pick a shell colour to match.

More progress:
Highlighting the "skin" areas done.
I think I am going green for the shell and hard areas.
Grey and brown feel too bland even if they give the hard-as-stone idea.
Red/orange seem too warm.
That left blue or green.
Blue feels too alien... but I might use that for the added tyranid parts.
And that leaves green. So he's going to be quite tortoise in the end.

The green is darker in-person, but the camera is seeing into the future.
Just need to work it up to highlgihts, maybe some black lining if necessary.
The outcrops on the shell will be picked out in something else, maybe gems, maybe stone, maybe something else...

The green areas have now had highlights and texture added.
The lumps are to be a contrasting colour, as yet undecided.
I have a new phone/camera, so relearning to take photos again after ~6 years.

Tyranid parts of the Ankylosaurus Prime are painted (as well as the weapon).
I went with blue, after I mentioned it earlier with how "alien" the colour would feel on this chap, and this helps show that the Tyranid parts are unnatural additions to his body.
Undecided on what colour to do the lumps in the shell:
Could do dark red to match the harder 'nid parts, to show that these are the "hard" parts.
Some evolution on the green (darker or lighter, or even to yellow) to show them developing from the hard green to harder stuff.
Could still go with a stone colour to sell the hardness.
Could go Gem effect for any of the colours. But I think this is too bling-y.
Not blue, as that is 'nid bits colour.
May have to do some mspaint mock-ups and see what fits best.

A blend from dark green to black with red "highlights".
"Green evolution" plus "red is hard" ideas.
This ties the 'nid and original parts together, but keeps the blue "alien". and breaks up the block of green at the rear.
Plus, in-universe, the hardest parts tend towards a dark red genetically. The inclusion of tyranid genes have led to thier expression in the shell.
On to the final details; ammo box, etc.

Ankylosaurus Prime takes another step towards the finish line.
Painted the ammo box and it's strap,
The lenses on the weapon, said ammo box, and his head,
The flag, it's pole and the fittings (not yet the insignia, obviously),
And the trophy pole with the tuft and helmet from suggestions I got on Mastodon.
Need to stop forgetting the ammo belt though.

Found by The (Mad) Scientist's army on a largely uninhabited world, this creature was subdued and returned to the lab for indoctrination and militarization for use in the army.
While making use of Tyranid biology for an interface for the mind control, The Scientist found that this being took to the genes well.
This led to the addition of many Tyranid arms that grow from the creature with little sign of slowing down their multiplication.
It's bulk, brutality, and enthusiastic embrace of the cause has made him a perfect squad leader for the Army of the Second Law.

I said I had 2 choices for going forward, so I chose to do both.
A female space marine.
This had been on my list for a long time as a (Mad) Scientist thing to do to pervert the whole Imperium "Space Marines are only male" thing.
But having seen the backlash towards any mention of female space marines online for the past few years, this project has moved up the list quickly.
So the project doubles up on The Scientist rebelling against the Space Marines, and as a way to annoy gate-keepers in the hobby.
Using a head from Crooked Dice that I bought from Bad Squiddo games a while back.
Fairly simple job to fit it on.
Cut the neck from a helmeted head (which will become a discarded helmet) to fill in the dip in the body.
Then glued the head to that using the sprue nub and a drilled hole to give a good join.
Also, I found the multi-part combi-weapons while looking through my bits and was mildly peeved to find you only get 1 bolter and 4 top options.
So I've cast up extra bolter parts so I can make use of all the tops.
This inclues one of the casts with some primer on to check fit and quality of casting.
Needed a little putty at the wrist to fill a gap.
AND...
A Necron warrior based on the Sanakan character from the Manga "Blame!".
Specifically the Safeguard version. Is it wrong that I liked the Safeguards and Silicon Life characters more than the "good" characters?
Re-posing the legs to get the usual "foot on tactical rock" pose to match the reference of the left.
While making the S-shape of the body from the reference on the right.
Once the legs are done, I can work on arching the back.
Then arms and weapon,
Add the head, Which I'm using a Wych head with the top knot removed (as the hair style mostly matches).
and then armour it up a bit to match the Manga, hiding much of the skeleton nature of the Necron (particularly around the hips and torso).
Until next time.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Two in a single day!
I'm really spoiling you lot.
Progress on the Sanakan Safeguard Necron.
Torso on and leaning back as far as it could on the "spine" of the hip piece.
And the head attached.
I'll need to chop some off the lower rib area of the torso to slim down to the waist.
Hopefully you can see the vision.

Nice space marine conversion, generally I don't touch the for or against fsm discussions with a ten foot pole (gets way too vitriolic too fast) but honestly that's a creative conversion! Will look great when painted, I'm sure. just some advice, respectfully, doing something with that amount of work just to annoy people is a bit of a waste, as opposed to doing it because you want to have a cool one-of-a-kind custom mini to build and paint. Good luck painting her, though

You know mate... back when I started 40k (Rogue Trader)... there were mentions of female space marines in the early publications. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Good on ya!
Anvildude: "Honestly, it's kinda refreshing to see an Ork vehicle that doesn't look like a rainbow threw up on it."
Thanks bullisariuscow.
I'm not above putting a lot of effort into a model for far smaller reasons. There are many examples.
Just to be clear;
I'm in this hobby for the modelling.
A female space marine was planned for my army years ago (nearly as far back as this blog goes).
The plan formed because I read something in the lore about all space marines being male for unknown reasons.
The (Mad) Scientist (in-universe) would naturally try to pervert this just to prove the Imperium wrong (as he has before with imortality etc.).
That is the sole reason for this project existing.
It was only in the last few years that I learnt of the incels that hated this concept (female space marines) and overlap with those that push out any female gamers from the hobby.
This hate has only pushed this project up my list, it is not the reason for me doing it.
If this model existing causes some pain and anger in the incels, that's a bonus.
If this model helps someone of the female pursuation feel more welcome in the hobby, that's a bigger bonus.
But I'm building it for me. Because that's what I do.
Thanks ghostmaker.
Thanks Gits'. I'm sure I have heard that during arguments I've seen about the topic.
But if anyone has an easy to hand copy of the Rogue Trader mentions of female space marines, I'd like a copy so I can wave it in the face of anyone that complains. Thanks.
And you've all seen my army, here in this blog, Nobody is telling me how to enjoy my hobby. I'm not worried about anyone hating what I do with my models. They will just be blocked, and I will move on with my life.
And so, progress:
I cast up a hollow helmet, which is easier than drilling out the interior of a solid space marine helmet.
Just so it can lay discarded on the base.
Speaking of laying on the base, that rectangular lump landed there just by chance, but I may paint a "man" symbol (as you get on toilets) on it to further hammer the point home.
I've also decided on a Chapter; Red Legion.
Mainly because of the cool chapter symbol that matches my army theme (e.g. the fire around the bases as a symbol of Entropy as a true concept of Chaos).
So she can be just that little be more "central" to my army.
She has now moved to my painting desk.
The Necron has "arms in progress". I'll share once they are on.
Laters.

The Scientist sits looking at a space marine helmet, "I wonder why all these marines we find are male, is the Imperium really that patriarchal? probably. Do they have some other use for females of the species? I haven't seen anything of the sort. Do they just not have the knowledge or ability to adapt the methods for such as minor difference in body and genes? That must be it, stuck in their ways. I'll have to experiment, but first I'll need a female volunteer..."
Later.
The Scientist: "On your next raid I want you to find a female human. Try to keep them alive, but intact is vital."
Ork: "Feemail ooman, got it boss... Er, boss... wotz the diff'ence wiv this feemail?"
Dark Eldar: "Never you mind, I'll point one out."
The Scientist: "Oh good, thank you. I didn't relish the idea of explaining it to our green friend here."
Much later.
Ork: "'Ear Ya go, boss. Feemail"
The Scientist: "Intact! I said, Intact. This woman is missing a leg!"
Ork: "Ar yes, boss. See bomz will do that. But, we found anotha. So I chopped the leg off that one and thought you could just stitch it on, like."
The Scientist: "Sergeant, you are aware of the difference between left and right?"
Ork: "Well, the elf is always saying I've got 2 left feet, so I didn't think it really mattered"
The Scientist: "I see we are going to have to give you another round of education. Go away, Urrok, and take that leg with you, I'll make do without it"
The Scientist studies the body. "I'm going to have to do a little genetic tinkering anyway to make you fit this spare armour, your legs were likely to be too short and need stretching. So may as well replace them with robotics."
Much much later.
The Scientist: "I see you have adapted to the armour well, my dear."
Marine: "Yessir, I am eager to test it in battle."
The Scientist: "And no ill effects?"
Marine: "No Sir. Other than getting used to the bionic legs"
The Scientist: "Yes, well you have the newly demoted Urrok to thank for that. Take this hammer and go an teach them the difference between left and right"
Had some minor issues with the transfers; a couple of breakages and one silvering a touch. Nothing a bit of paint didn't fix.
The chapter symbol required cutting down a skull on a white circle to just leave the black skull. But it was the only black skull transfer I had.
May I present, Tactical marine #14 (Red Legion):
And I included a photo with my Blood Angel marine #2, to show (to myself) that the red is different.
I can now return to the Necron conversion...
