I love the nostalgia threads, bring back some good memories, so in that vein, which WD was your fave, and why?

This was mine, as it had the rules for Confrontation, the ancestor of Necromunda, and I read those rules to death.

The one that had the hundreds of different combinations to make your own order of Empire knights. It was a great issue.

I like 310 & 311 because of the Black Templar …. 326 wasn’t bad with the Dark Angels and forgive me but the latest WD wasn’t half bad either with the introduction of the new paint line and the current Golden Demon winners…..

Absolutely, my first issue and the one that got me into wargaming

Incidentally, is this pic below (from Salute last weekend) of ex-WD editor Paul 'fat bloke' Sawyer?

I would say the magazine had some of its best issues under his stewardship.

Good idea for a thread. I think mine would ave to be #122: rules for Traitor Terminators in Space Hulk, and background on warp travel and navigators.

100 for me - first one I ever bought, and it got me hooked.

A WFRP adventure involving pygmies, extra rules for WH Siege (including dropping beehives on people's heads) and extensive Dreadnought rules for RT.

Fantastic stuff

Shame it has to be mated to the completely crap content on todays issues, then eh?

I'll take the older style of art because we at least had useful and interesting content aside from "these are awesomesauce, buy 6 of them (except that box of 5 whatevers who are $190 a box and limited to 5 boxes per customer)." that fills the current lot.

Still, WD is a good metaphor for the current state of the game. Pretty on the surface, full of crap underneath. The older one was rough around the edges, but perfectly serviceable.

Look at some of this stuff and change your mind http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/342983.page

It was a lot more variable back then - admittedly some of it was quite basic (trying to fill out new rule books with original art for instance), but some of the stuff by Adrian Smith, Mark Gibbons and Les Edwards dumps on most of the current stuff by a country mile, both technically and in terms of character.

I think the difference is today's art is done in-house, rather than commissioning professional artists for the job - this allows GW to have a more cohesive vision of the game world, but at the same time I would argue some of the new stuff just isn't as good (the latest BA cover for instance)

Good one, I was going to say 100 for the dreadnought rules. But I would also add whatever WDs that had the original IG and Squat lists, the robot rules or the whole article and lists for the Ultramarines (98?).

They were all pretty damn good back then, but maybe it's because it was all new to me then?

I can't remember the number since I'm at work and the copy in question is buried in a pile at home but one of my cherished memories of WD was one containing a Battle Report featuring a small band of Dwarves attempting to retrieve a relic from a barrow whilst fending off a Brettonian attack. The barrow was scratch built (and they showed you how to make it later in the issue IIRC) and the battle report featured descriptions of both what was happening outside the tomb and also inside as the dwarves tried to reclaim the sword from the barrow guardians.

It was written in a faux-novel style rather than player A moved Unit B and attacked Enemy C so it read like a fantasy story too which I loved.

The one that had the Imrik vs Egrimm Van Horstman battle report. That one got me hooked on Fantasy.

I still use the old Imrik for my High Elf lord on Dragon. And funnily enough am looking for a Egrimm on Baudros currently lol

144, first mention of Noise Marines. Good issue all round. Never been entirely sure why I like it, since I've never played any of the featured armies.

My first couple of issues, 139 onward, which basically invented the shape of the Imperium and how warp travel worked were also great.
