Okay, I now have four display boards covered in bits, foam, spackle, rocks, etc. Tomorrow they will be covered in sand and various kinds of textures. Which will make friday my day to add a possible second layer and prime the bits. Weekend I need to try to paint the entire board in all of its lovely brown tones. Which leaves me 3 days next week to paint the bits and some where along the line put together my objective.

Oh man! Lots to do and crunch time is arriving!

Thursday Update



Wounded apothecary, throwing his last grenade, I have him sitting on a stand so you get a good idea how he will be set. I need to add some damage and make some of the bullet wounds a bit dirtier, but you get the idea. As for the board, it is currently sitting in my garage drying. Steve and I covered it with sand and rocks today. After closely examining Gits Mantis Warriors he uses larger pebbles on his bases so we kept up that thought and put a lot more of them on his section of the board. We're going to end up with myself and solar lion on the back two with steve and git on the front two.

Thanks to you and Steve for working on the display board, that's a huge part of our army's presentation.

Here is a couple WIP pictures of my objective. I have basically not done anything but paint today. I should be able to finish this guy and still get a good chunk of painting on the boards today. The boards have been browned, but I've been doing some experimenting with the next few steps before proceeding. I don't have to much time to mess anything up so once my tests have concluded I should be able to make some good progress on the boards. So far though, they look neat!

There will be more pics later!

Nice work on the zebra marine!

I like the subtley of the piece. Maybe it's just my personal view of what damage a marine can take ( I blame the Horus heresy books) but I reckon that marine may walk again! Is it possible, and I have no idea how to do this other than to add it to the fluff, to raise his importance? Like saying he has X amount of gene seed or something?

I have been really enjoying this thread. Do you plan on expanding this army after AC?

Thanks Taffiarti! I think that he will most definitely walk again, that's why he is such a great objective. Interesting idea about the importance level of the apothecary and I'm sure that if you set up a campaign you could easily fit that in. For example, you play X number of games and for every game that the apothecary survived he could have X amount of geneseed that he had collected and in the final game that would determine how many victory points he'd be worth. That'd be fun. Especailly if the final game was an apocalypse game.

I'm glad you've been enjoying the thread Nicorex, I will do some minimal expansion after the game just to make everything fit nicely. For example, I have the Huron model and a 5 man painted unit of marines with various power weapons, i would probably try to make them fit nicely into the army and then be done. I have really enjoyed this project but afterward I will most likely go back to painting my Ice Angels, they still need plenty of attention and I've got a baal predator and a 10 man unit to paint!

In further development, I have completed my objective and added a few more layers to the boards. Next three days will be detail work and adding the various kinds of flocking to the board.

Off of that last post, I still consider myself fairly new to the hobby, and was wondering,
What does one do with a completed army, specifically when you have another army that you prefer of the same race? Is the other one just kept in storage? Or do you use it occasionally?

You can never have too many armies!.. I always like to do theme armies. Never know when you find a new player who doesn't have an army and you can let them use one of yours. or...

you want to paint a different looking army, in love with your original.. keep it as a reminder of the countless hours spent painting. Or...

Other people sell them off occasionally.

Trade them in the marine swap...

I have 3 SM armies, all the codex's play differently, but the real reason is I like to paint variety. I have most of my original RT models. I keep them for fun. And .. the real answer... it's like a catapult.. sure you may not use it very often, but that one time you really need one, you be glad you kept it.

Board update, so I know I keep saying I am going to take some pictures and post them, but every time I take a picture I see something I need to fix or want to change, so at this point I think I am going to wait until they are all completed.

In other news though, the boards are nearly completed. Steve and I sat down and painted everything on all four quadrants of the board, we further washed and highlighted everything and even laid down a lot of the static grass flocking. All of the "loyalist" chapters are represented as well! All that's left is to add the fall colored flocking stuff and then the tall grass so Gits Tranquility guys have something to hide in. Over all it turned out better then I expected. The further along the display board gets the happier I am becoming about it!

Tomorrow, I am helping Steve complete his army and we're doing the final flocking. Army lists have been compiled, books, dice, templates, and all necessary gaming utensils have been packed. Three days from now the Wardens will gather! Get excited!

Awesome! Every you do ice makes me want to expand my army even further.

OKAY! I have returned from Adepticon. It was a blast! I think one of my teammates is going to be starting a thread to show stuff in but in the meantime I will here for quite some time uploading 194 pictures for all of you to enjoy. I will be adding titles and descriptions at a later date but usually the pics speak for themselves. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and chatted, it was great to meet so many fellow gamers and dakka members. For those who missed it I highly recommend you make it to this event. It was a great time and everyone was cool. The armies were great and the event ran without a hitch (that I know of). Even compared to official Games Workshop events, this was way better. Grand Tournaments and Games days are neat and all but this one had a better atmosphere.

At any rate, I will post more about this later on the appropriate thread but I will let you all know. I need a short break from painting and modeling, lol.

And Ice and his friend were very cool to play with. None of the gamers we played with were nothing but fun. some more competive than others but all helpful, reasonable and appeared to have a good time.

I second Ice's comment.. get a team together and go geek out for a weekend.

How do you paint the white? What colors do you use?

Something that I've learned about painting white is that one layer is just not enough. I prime that model black, then painted fortress gray on his armor, and then several layers of watered down white, once that was finally done I worked on the details and what not but went back and added a black wash and a brown wash to make him look dirty.

OH MAN, I managed to stay away from any modeling or painting for approximately 4 days before I had to get back to it. Today I built my forgeworld Huron model and I built an Ice Angel for the great marine swap. He is making me a tech marine so I decided I would make a "techy" guy to send him. I havn't named him, but im always open for suggestions.



And Whale_music, yes I saw the mold lines and I fixed them. Jeez, I can already see him pointing his finger and hear him calling me out.

You missed some mold lines there.......wait.......damn.

That techy-guy is supremely awesome.... really liking it, is the ammo pack on his back from the SW terminators?

LOL i have a giggle thinking of the firework display should someone shoot that andit ignited.

I am, yet now when I look at them I see all of the little things that I can improve on them. I primed some guys today and I've got a random group of items that I plan to now paint. The marine swap marine is top on the list but I've got some other things that I'll be doing as well. Pictures will of course follow as the WIP continues.

I also have a terrain feature that I've had laying around for years that I want to put together. I've got a forgeworld manticore platform that I've had for 3 or 4 years now, I want to turn it into a terrain piece but I've never quite determined how I want it done. If any one has a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it. Keep in mind my board is an arctic board.

Good for you. I think your painting has gotten better. Your figures at AC were sweet and your terrain detailing made our models look even better.

Does that thing he is holding count as a combie-bolter? If so does it have the normal rules for one or is he effectively carrying two separate weapons? Very nice work

I would treat that as a combi-bolter. Yeah, definitely a combi-bolter. He also carries a searchlight, lol.
