Report Finale - WGC Game 7 vs. Paul M's Imperial Guard

Spoiler:

Well for those of you that have read all 18 games so far, this is the finale.

After months of painting, re-working my eldar strategies, this is the culmination of all my work, my last and proudest moments in 5th edition with an army that most people consider "out of date" , not only that, but playing with units that most people consider "are bad". Phoenix Lords, Wraithlords, and Seer Councils are generally thought of as Lower Tier Units, but Im currently 4-1 using them. Not only that, but my record is 15-2 for the summer currently and am at an 88% win percentage.

I hope that youve enjoyed this report, and I really hope that If youve read all or most of the reports, that you post on this thread and say some thoughts (good or bad). I also hope you post your plans for 6th edition, and I hope that if you do see me at a tournament some day down the road sporting Craftworld Avior or another army, that you come say hello!

Deployment : Pitched Battle
Primaries:
Annihilation - Kill Points
Seize Ground - 3 Objectives
Capture and Control - 2 Objectives

We place Objectives, and C&C (in order ill just tell you know)
My Objective was in the center of my board edge, it was a relay tower.
My opponents objective was in his back right corner, another relay tower.
Reglar Objectives were One on the right middle next to rocks.
Another was on the far left in some crystals on his side.
The third was to the bottom right of the building in the open.

My Opponent Wins the Roll off , and Im like Oh Crap imperial guard is going to unload on me.
Then he gives me first turn, and declares that his army is going to full reserve (He didnt have to tell me this till he deployed, but whatever Im not complaining).

Eldar Pre Game

He has an Astropath, so he gets +1 reserve and gets to re-roll outflanks. So his Vandettas are probably going to outflank with guys inside while the rest of the army comes in off the board edge.

Im honestly really excited, as I know I have the tools in my army to compleatly smack this list off the board.

Wraithlords - Shooting Vandettas Ill eventually geta few.
Seer Council - Once I get Fortune off it will be impossible for him to kill this unit, and I can rampage through anything I want, including his tank line.
Karandras - He can rampage through everything as well.

Kill Points - I just need to kill his army and I should win this.
C&C - He put his C&C objective in the corner, if I can get Karandras/Seer council on his objective he isnt going to win that.
Objectives - He can have the back left one , all I need to do is control the middle 2.

My Wraithlords will probably get smacked by Lascannon Fire. My Tanks will also probably have problems with shooting. As far as Karandras / Seer Council I dont see them dying, and I see them doing ALOT Of damage to his tank lines.

Eldar Deployment
Eldar 1
Eldar 2

My Opponent full reserves, and declares that his Vandettas are outflanking. He does not try to steal the initiative.

Its pitched battle so I deploy my army at the 12" mark. One thing I can do is use my Tanks to line the board edge, and foce him to tank shock into my seer council, where I can death or glory. I choose not to do this because str9 on armor 12/13 really isnt that great, and I dont have a good chance of killing anything.

I move my wraithlords up and run them. One stays back behind crystals to deal and keep my C&C Objective.
Other 2 Wraithlords move up the board, hopefully getting assaults or something depending on where his army comes in.

I turbo boost turn 2. I cant keep him off the board, but I can choose where my opponent comes in.

I put Karandras in the middle, if my opponents put anything within 14" of the serpent Karandras can get out and assault it, I put that in the middle of the board.
Towards the right side of the board I put my seer council. I place them so they can play the C&C objective, and also the entire board edge.
I place a fire dragon serpent in the back right corner. They can kill whatever comes in, and can also move 12" and smack a vandetta.
I put my last Fire Dragon serpent towards the left, hopefully so I can move 12" and smack his Lemon squad when it comes on.

My Opponent has 2 Places he can come in.
1) The far left of the board (away from his C&C Objective).
2) Right next to his C&C Objective, where Karandras, a seer council and a fire dragon squad are waiting.

Im hoping that my opponent makes a mistake, and allows a seer council / karandras first turn assault ona 6" moving tank line. Even if my opponent brings his army on the far left, hes going to have LOS problems, as well as problems capturing his own objective.

My 2 Jetbike squads are reserved. One of them comes in turn 2 and Turbo boosts on the board edge.

My Last DAVU Serpent is on my C&C objective.

Imperial Guard 2

He rolls his reserves and gets everything but a manticore and the Command Squad in.

3 Vandettas come in on my right towards my sides of the board. 2 Melta squads get out and plan to blast a wraithlord.

His Lemon Squad and his Manticore come in far left.

His Blob squad comes in the middle gap, right next to my seer council.

Vandettas shoot 3 Lascannons into my Wraithlord, and manage to bring it down a wound. His 6'ish Meltas then lay into it, and due to needing 4's and 4's he brings the lord down to 1 wound.
Veteran Squad shoots into my Back Right fire dragon serpent. He has 6 str7 Shots, and I get a cover save. Somehow he Manages to blow up the serpent, Dragons Hold and loose 1.
His Lemons and Manticore lay into my Left Fire Dragon Serpent, and he manages to stun it due to a failed cover save.

My Opponent then charges his Blob squad into my seer council. He looses 7-8 and I loose 0-1. He has stubborn which according to him "doesnt take fearless saves, and never takes a negative modifier for loosing combat". I was under the impression that stubborn allowed you to re-roll failed leadership tests, but he Ive opened a guard codex like once. We pile in.

Eldar 3

I cast fortune.
Other Bike squad comes in, both squads turbo boost around the board playing Qwiditch while the rest of the army does everything.

Davu Serpent moves 12" to get cover from the building.

Fire Dragons move to shoot/assault Chimera (its the only thing they can do, if they were mobile I would have gone for a vandetta).
Other Fire Dragons hold, either I get out and die out of melta range, or I wait.

Middle Wraithlord gets wraithsighted due to the seer council getting charged.
Other Wraithlord moves to shoot vandetta.
Wraithlord with 1 wound left moves into cover to shoot at the Guardman that just got out.

Scorpions get out and move to assault the guard platoon (I need to get my Seer council out of combat asap)

Fire Dragons shoot and blow up the far right Chimera, the guardman loose a few in the explosion.
Wraithlord double flamers the guardsman that meltad him, and they all die.
Last Wraithlord shoots into the Vandetta, and Immobolizes it.

DAVU Serpent and mabe jetbikes and Karandras's serpent shoot into the other Melta guard squad from the Vandetta. I bring them down to 1 model and they pass leadership (Ugh).

Karandras's Serpent moves 12" and puts its but facing his tank line , so Karandras might be able to assault, and they cant get my rear armor.

The Scorpions and the Seer Council do some Crazy ammount of wounds at initiative 5, the commisar dies due to wound allocation (lol) and they fail leadership and run off the board.

Seer council spreads out, Scorps get a horrible consol and cant get into cover.

Pretty good turn. I immobolized a vandetta, took out 2 guard squads, a chimera, and free'd up my seer council.

IG 3

His Command comes in, along with his manticore.

He shoots into my wraithlord and kills it with lascannons.
His guard squad on the far right shoots into the dragons, and kills them through going to ground.
HIs CCS shoots plasma guns into my fire dragons and kills them all.
His Manticore shoots into my stunned fire dragon serpent, and manages to blow it up.
The Lemons shoot into the Fire Dragons, and kill all of them as well.
Something else shoots into Karandras's Serpent, and manages to immobolize it.
My Middle Wraithlord Takes 2 wounds from Lascannon Fire.

So overall I lost 16 aspect warriors, Immobolized a serpent, destroyed a serpent, and killed a wraithlord and put 2 wounds on another. Fubar.

Eldar 4

Fortune is Cast.
Karandras gets out of his immobolized ride, he moves forward, and gets a decent fleet move and is in assault range (yes phoenix lord have fleet).

Seer Council moves to assault the CCS Chimera.

Wraithlord moves into terrain to assault the immobolized Vandetta

Jetbikes Turbo boost.
Davu Serpent moves compleatly behind the building to avoid Vandettas.

I shoot a wraithlord, 2 Serpents into the side of a Chimera, and Im not able to destroy it, meaning that my seer council needs to assault the Chimera, not the guys inside.

Seer Council Assaults the Chimera.
Karandras Assaults the Russ formation.
Wraithlord Assaults the Immobolized Vandetta.

Wraithlord assaults into the Vandetta, I get 3 Auto Pens. I roll a 1, 2, 3 so it isnt dead.

Apparently his Rus's moved, so I need 4's to hit. I roll like 6 hits and get 4 pens and a glance. He puts 2 Pens on the back Russ, and its destroyed. He puts a Pen on the middle rus, and its immobolized and destroyed because of squadrons. His last rus with the glance is somethind. My opponent then requests my codex, and reads the Karandras's entry. I chuckle as I realize my opponent is trying to find out if Im cheating / If Karandras can really smack Lemons with his fist. He reads the codex and agree's that I am playing it correctly, and my heart sings with Joy as Karandras just smacked 2 Guard tanks with his fist.

My Seer council assaults into the Chimera, and with a bazillion str9 attacks I blow it up. The squad inside takes enough wounds for a morale check, fails, and runs off the board.

IG 4

His last Chimera stays off the board, I think it has a veteran squad.

He shuffles his manticores and lemons 6" away from Karandras (RUN FROM MY PHOENIX LORD!!!!!!!!!)

He shoots into a bike squad, and kills 1 with cover saves.
He shoots into the wraithlord, and brings down its last wound.
The last of his shooting goes into my DAVU Serpent, and nothing happens.

My Bike squad fails its morale, and goes back 20", but is still on the board.

Eldar 5

Wraithlord in cover starts moving for the open objectives and aligns to shoot at a vandetta.

DAVU Serpent Turbo Boosts to contest objective behind a rock, (flamer vets are inside the vandetta close to it).
Seer Council Fortunes, and moves to assault the last squad on the C&C Objective.
Jetbikes Turbo boost onto my C&C Objective (I control 1-0).

Karandras moves through cover and fleets and gets ready to assault a manticore.
Seer Council gets ready to assault the last Veteran Squad on the C&C Objective.

Wraithlord shoots into Vandettas, to no Avail.
Seer Council shoots and assaults into an Imperial Guard Squad, they whipe them and consolidate.
Karandras assaults into a Manticore that moved 6". Karandras Punches the Manticore off the board (FEAR MY PHOENIX LORD !@#!@#!@#!@#!@#@!#)

As the game stands right now.
Kill Points : Tied'ish, I might be loosing.
C&C : Eldar 1-0
Objectives : 0-0

Imperial Guard 5

His last Chimera comes in, and tank shocks into my Seer Council in an attempt to tank shock them off the objective. I placed the seer council in a way where multiple models were within 3" of the objective. I pass my leadership (lol) , Death or Glory, and my Warlock sticks his Witchblade right in the fuel tank and destroys the Chimera (giving me a kill point).

His Flamer Vets in the Vandetta get out, and move onto the Objective.
His bottom Vandetta turbo boosts onto my C&C.
His other vandetta moves 12", and the last guy inside gets out onto the objective.

He shoots at my turbo boosted bikes, 1 Bike remains after a crapload of shooting and it passes morale.
He shoots his manticore and lemon and mabe a vandetta at my turbo boosted wave serpent, and doesnt manage to do anything to it.

If the game ends here we have.
KillPoints : Tied
C&C : 0-0
Objectives : IG 1-0

Paul rolls the dice and rolls a 1, the game ends. Eldar Loose 10-20.

I let out a sigh, It is finished, The Ultimate Eldar Battle Report is DONE!

Last Game Summary

Paul was a great guy to play against. If he reads this I want him to know that I really enjoyed the last game, he was a great guy, with a great army, and I really enjoyed playing him and his army (the game got a little heated at points, mostly due to time) , but overall I would really love to play him and his army again.

Ive thought about this game alot over the past week, and it was a really crazy game that came down to the wire.

The Problem was, Paul was basically playing Mechdar Imperial Guard. He reserved, came in, and used his mobility to negate alot of damage. I only had 3 turns to widdle him down, and the 3 turns that I did have against him I compleatly smacked his army (although he did considerable damage to mine as well).

Some Mistakes I thought Paul made.
1) Reserving. Although it won him the game, if he had deployed standard and just shot at me without fortune, Im pretty sure he could have tabled me. If he had gotten first turn, and deployed centrally, Im not sure how I would of negated all that firepower. My SeerCouncil would have gotten smacked with all the ordinace comming at me with no fortune, and it would have been a really bad turn.
2) Some of his movements puzzled me. He brought in his guard squad and assaulted my seer council. This puzzled me because he wasnt going to win that combat. I think what he was trying to do was keep my seer council away from his tank line (which was a good idea), but it only stopped me for 1 turn and it was a 150+ point 1 turn hinderance. IMO he should have brought the blob squad in on the left and bubble wrapped his tank line. This would of compleatly stopped any assault, and given him the left objective.
3) Reserving also was a huge problem, because he couldnt come in on his C&C Objective, and he would of bubble wrapped it theres no way I would of gotten on it.

My GamePlay
I really felt as if I was doing well the entire game. I cant believe I only had 8 kill points, it felt like I had alot more. Im really surprised Astropaths and Commisars and the company commander and the individual squads arnt Kill Points, I killed alot more than 8. 1 Lemon Russ got away from a squad of 3, an Immobolized Vandetta didnt die to a wraithlord, and 1 IG guy was able to get back inside the vandetta, so theres 3 KPS.

Deployment: My Deployment, and turn 1-2 movements had the right ideas. I made him go awaya from his C&C objective, and I got Karandras, fire dragons, and Seer council towards his Board edge. I was a little un-sure with how to use my wraithlords. My main goal with them was to protect my C&C objective, and the 2 Objectives in the center ( was ignoring the left objective in the crystals/contesting it with Karandras if it mattered). One HUGE problem was my Fire Dragon deployment. 1 Squad with deployed fine in the center, but due to getting stunned they werent able to do anything. One Fire Dragon serepent was on the corner (it could have gone for Vandettas or anything, but unfortunantly it got cracked as well).

What really hurt me this game was the fact that the game ended. IF the game had gone on to turn 6, I would have tank shocked my DAVU Serpent 24" onto his C&C Objective giving me that primary. I would have killed another manticore from Karandras, shot is lone guard, whiped the last squad with the seer council. This would have given me 3 more KPS giving me that Primary. I would have Turbo boosted my Jetbike onto an objective, while using my wraithlord to assault the flamer vets killing them for a 4th KP and an objective. IF the game had gone on to turn 6, I would have won 30-0.

As far as things I could have done differently, I could have deployed my Fire Dragons more centrally (although if they hadnt been destroyed they would have blown alot of stuff up turn 3). I could have kept my scorps in their transport (but then again what would they have done that game?). Overall I thought I played this game pretty well, I dictated where Paul's forces went, I massacred alot of his army, and if the game had gone on till turn 6 I would have won hands down and gotten 25 if not 30 points (Which would have down me the Rogue Trader Bracket).

WGC Summary

Unfortunantly I wasnt able to bring home the prize, but I was still able to go 4-2. My games were pretty spot on. The GK game sucked because I wasnt aggressive enough, and the IG game was a loss due to the game ending. I could have easily gone 5-1 with this list.

If you add in my perfect sports score, and a paint score of 27, I would have come in 19th in the Rogue Trader bracket / 120'ish people? which puts me in roughly the top 15-20% (not to shabby for a bad eldar list)!

I really enjoyed seing everyone at WGC. The Bols guy's (I cant name all of them but they know who they are) did a great job. Perfect terrain, great vanue, really complicated yet balanced missions (which I like).

There was a huge assortment of armies, alot of eye candy armies, and I really enjoyed going!

Ultimate Battle Report Conclusion

At the begginning of the summer I had a dream, which was to go to 3 Grand Tournaments, do well, post the games in a battle report format and get 20,000 views.

A month after that dream, the thread has all 19 battle reports posted, with a W/L record of 15-3 , and 19,700 views (It looks like we will reach the 20,000 view goal).

Alamo (4-1) - Tied Best General.
Railhead (7-0) Best General.
WGC (4-2) Top 20% , scored 19th of Rogue Trader Bracket.

Total Record - 15-3
W % = 80% Win Rate

Chaos Daemons - 0-0
Chaos Space Marines 1-1
Dark Eldar 1-0
Eldar 1-0
Grey Knights 1-1
Blood Angels - 4-0
Imperial Guard 1-1
Necrons 2-0
Orks 0-0
Sisters of Battle 1-0
Space Marines 1-0
Space Wolves 1-0
Tau Empire 0-0
Tyranids 1-0

I had alot of fun this summer, and if youve read the report I really appreciate it. I hope you learned something about the hobby, and I wish you the best in 6th (if youve read a report, please post a comment, long or short, about whatever. What you would like to see/not see. Tactical analysis, rules, opinions, anything you like).

One thing I learned about the hobby, is that the main thing is the people you play it with. The reason the 3 tournaments were so fun, is that I went with the same people to every tournament. The people are what makes the hobby great.

As far as a tactical analysis, it doesnt really matter now as 5th edition is done with. I did prove tho, that at the end of 5th edition, Eldar was still a viable codex, and you can win with them using many different styles and units.

Im going to go get my 6th edition book tonight, Ill probably attend a local tournament in a few weeks (If I do ill post a batrep of it). If I play 6th youll see my Eldar pulling the same shenanigans, if I dont like the game Ill probably switch to FoW or something.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed it, and good luck in 6th!

You're 100% right. I play to hang with friends and have a good time.

You did well in these tournaments and deserve a firm pat on the back for your dedication and hard work. Especially the hard work delivering these batreps to us.

Thanks for taking us on an exciting ride!

Congrats on showing us how to get it done with eldar in the twilight of 5th. And thanks for taking the time to write up your experiences. They were both entertaining and informative.

In your last game against Paul's IG, I don't think he would have been able to wipe out your seer council had he deployed everything because you would probaly have put them in reserves.

Regarding the most viewed battle report thread, I believe that would be Buffo's series of DE reports. Over 30K viewed before it got locked due to excessive arguing.

These battle reports have jaded me. Other battle reports just seem... gakky now. These gave me a good sense of what was happening, where all the units were, and WHY. What units do to be afraid of, what they are good at killing. I havent been to official tournaments, so it was enjoyable to read about what goes on there. I wanted to see how different armies do against each other, and what kind of lists people bring to be competitive. I'm looking forward to your reports from 6th.

Thank you for doing all this Smitty, theres a lot of time, dedication, and effort gone into these reports (well, and 40k too....).

Really well put together, and really gave us an idea of how exactly you were thinking throughout each game (where/how to deploy, target priorities etc.) that really make each of the games come alive from an observers stand point.

also, Congrats on all your wins/podiums and all that jazz, a great way to end 5th!

What units do to be afraid of, what they are good at killing. I havent been to official tournaments, so it was enjoyable to read about what goes on there. I wanted to see how different armies do against each other, and what kind of lists people bring to be competitive. I'm looking forward to your reports from 6th.

Definitely the best format for batreps that i've seen. Big fan, and I love how you played your Eldar. It's making me seriously consider dumping some cash on a bike Seer Council.

With the new psychic powers that make your opponent re-roll saves, and the new "invisible" power, I really think seer councils are going to be insane in 6th. Like you wont be able to kill them. Not only that, but shining spears got a huge buff.

Amazing thread! It's been a great ride, and I've been following this the whole time.
You really have a great feel for writing reports. We get a little for-thought, a some blow by blow action, and some great post game thoughts. Most importantly though, the things I find great in your reports are the thought processes behind your gameplay and tactics, and also the personal emotions and expressions during the game. It helps set the tone and the feel of the moment when you are cursing at the dice gods.

I also like how you are respectful to your opponents, and everyone comes out looking like a class act.

Thanks for the effort smitty, it's been appreciated by me!
