Well, I'm struggling with a homemade blue wash or glaze... I was really hoping to get a cool blue tint to the armor, but this isn't it. I may scrap it, repaint a couple of models, and fall back on good ol' Nuln Oil. But that would yield a very monochromatic model, and I was looking for that splash of color. Here's were I stopped:

Both models coated in Leadbelcher. Left model upper is plain Leadbelcher, left model lower has a Nuln wash, and right model has a homemade wash made of Macragge, water, and flow aid. I wanted a light bluish tint with some deeper color in the recesses, but I just got dull, powdery blue all over that kills the metallic aspect. I may keep fiddling with the recipe, but I'm on the clock for the monthly contest and I'm tempted to back off the the experiment. What say any of you?

I think the issue is you're washing the model to get a glaze effect and you're killing the basecoat. I would use the same wash you used but use it like a glaze, just have very little on your brush and paint it in one direction towards the more shaded parts, will give that slight bluish tint without killing the metallic effect.

Thanks, A.D... I never could have bungled through this without all the good advice. The paint is nearly done on the Arbites, and I still hope to build cool bases for them.

I did get diverted by two other projects...

Mad Doc Grotsnik's Drunken Master Challenge, for which I painted one model in two hours while drinking multiple IPAs. I had an old Inquisitorial scribe that had been painted and stripped twice and was looking a little sad. He deserved a better cleanup job, but there was no time. He's a good entry for this contest and also a good prop for my League of Extraordinary Riveters entry described below. Speaking of, please check out the LoER contest and think about an entry!

Details and beverage selections in spoliers.
Spoiler:

Primed in white. Voodoo Ranger IPA from New Belgium. Start the clock!

It took most of an hour and most of a beer to put the colors down.

Round 2: Top of the second hour and second brew. Incredible Pedal IPA from Denver Beer Co. Ready to throw down some washes.

Apothecary White Contrast paint was a solid asset.

Finished painting and prepped for a base... which I hadn't made yet. Fifteen minutes on the clock to cut, trim, glue, spray, and wash a base.

And, finished... 2 nice craft beers and one painted model in two hours. Now to write the post with beer #3... a Fresh Haze IPA from Deschutes.

The League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Contest, which is a thematic tribute to first responders. My concept is to build the interior detail in a medical facility in an industrial colony on a frontier world started with a dive into the bits box and came up with some fun materials.

There's more plans and materials in spoilers.
Spoiler:

Inspired by another one like it I've done...

Made out of one of these:

I'll build the exterior with the MEdge terrain sprues I've been excited to try.

I'll build the interiors out of card and other textured materials.

The bits box can offer some details.

That scribe model is great, I like your whites/greys, nice and smooth looking. And I daresay the paint job improved as the night progressed...

Thanks, zahnib! Contrast did a lot of the heavy lifting. I've been using Painter's Touch 2x Paint+Primer and it seems to handle the flow characteristics of Contrast nearly as well as the GW base coats for that purpose. I may pick up a few more colors to experiment with...

And yes, my progress did flow along with the beer... I enjoyed a couple of strong IPAs, but I put them on top of a bellyful of sushi, so I maybe wasn't quite as inebriated as I could have been.

Now that’s a good sounding competition! And you’re entry turned out well. The terrain plans look good too!

Thanks, y'all! I think one more session on paint will do it for the Arbites and I'll start building their bases in parallel with the medical facility. I'll start b y cutting down the photo storage box, building a floor out of either card or foam core, and cutting wall panels out of styrene. Then I'll have the dimensions to start laying out a floor plan and figuring out what needs to mount to the walls. I have a few LEDS and coin cell housings left over from the generator project, so I'll probably find a few ways to light this up.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Okay, I cut down the box and will use the top half for the medical station and the bottom for something else... maybe a machine shop or a hab unit of some sort. Unfortunately the walls were pretty warped and bowed inward, so whatever floor I used was going to have to add some structure. Foam core did the trick, although another strut across the top may be needed. It's bigger than I was picturing by a lot, so I'm going to need to design some more interior elements. Your brainstorms are welcome... what does a medical station at an industrial/mining colony on a frontier world need? I'm thinking a main exam/surgical suite plus a couple of recovery beds, lots of storage, a small lab, and of course a shrine to the God-Emperor. What else?

Good job on the scribe and Apothecary White is really great to get nice looking white, esp. if the sculpt has enough texture. Excited to see how your LoER entry will look like.

What about something left over from the mining colony? What was the original purpose of the building? Was it the medical center of the frontier world outpost, or just recently converted into one? There could be some stuff that never got removed or thrown out, and/or is still attached to a wall that was from the building's original purpose.

Thanks Viterbi! DJ... good ideas there, keep 'em coming!

Here's some custom bases I built for the Arbites, which I'm calling done otherwise. I've always looked with a little envy on the bases I've seen people build with scrap and stock styrene, so it was high time I went for it. I used mesh, corrugated tin, embossed styrene, various tubing, rod, and strips, an old Necromunda bulkhead, bass guitar wire... I went with 32mm, a little bigger than the models technically call for for, but I needed space to work and these Arbites models don't really have a place in any current army. Plus, if I can get the rust effects close to right, the orange should offset the blue armor nicely. I'll spray today and paint tonight, so look for those Arbites tomorrow, as usual, right before the deadline!

Edit: I got them sprayed this afternoon, first with flat gray and then lightly with flat red-brown. I'll wash the deeper recesses and then get after some rust effects tonight, and while that dries I'll clip and prep the Arbites... home stretch!

Well, lots of crates marked medical supplies, partially covered with tarp to fill space. Perhaps a local small lifeform hiding behind them...

Thanks, y'all... I'm pretty happy with the way they came out. I had planned to make two passes with a sponge, once with Ryza Rust and once with Rhinox Hide, but after the two-tone spray basecoat, a wash of Agrax Earthshade, and a drybrush of Leadbelcher, I thought they looked good and were a solid fit for the painted models.

Here's the finished bases... the Arbites are already mounted and I'll try to photograph them in some good afternoon light. Posts later tonight if we're lucky!

I finished the Arbites patrol unit. I love these models... I bought them at my FLGS of many years, Ralph's Comic Corner in Ventura, California. They're still around if you have a comics hobby on top of this one.

Love those iconic helmets. It's such a shame they didn't do a modern take on those for the Palanite Enforcers or Subjugators in nuNecromunda!

Congrats on finishing and second Gwyn, those helmets would have been great with the new minis. Although there are third party ones, I may look into that.

Thanks, everyone. It only took 20+ years (and Dakka's contest theme) to get them painted. I might try to run them as Inquisitorial henchmen somehow, and I'm thinking about painting and basing my converted Ork-gryns from a few pages back to match. I wound up being pretty pleased with the blue armor and I really enjoyed building and painting those bases... I kind of want to do some more!

You could always use the Palanite heads for some Scout headswaps, to make "Primaris Scouts."

Good work on the Arbite MacPhail! They look the business, which is what you expect from The Law. The blue armour looks great as does the subtle glow around their eyes

MacPhail,

Arbites look good. I am jealous you have some for Necromunda. No a fan of the new plastic ones.

Thanks, team. I had originally envisioned tinting the faces green or blue with a bright highlight as if they had some sort of HUD lighting their faces from within... but there just wasn't room or skill for that. I wish I'd done a last skin tone highlight and then hit the silver face plates again to strengthen the contrast... and of course, to have used blue washes from the start. Also, I had trouble with the photography... I need a light box and/or better camera. I'm glad to have them done and I'll look for a way to use them as Inquisitorial acolytes of Imperial Guard Veterans or something... any of you Kill Team players see any potential use there?

Now I'll be switching to building my (sixteen-piece) Imagifier for the June painting contest and getting going on the LoER project. My brain is bursting with ideas there... I'm going to suspend a medical servitor from an overhead assembly that lights from within... IF I can find the right thickness styrene card in my stash.

Exploded Sister is really something. The Arbites squad is awesome. Minis, bases, everything. Just cool space cops.

Thanks! Yeah, she's a really cool model. I may replace the little chest with a book since I'll mostly run her with the Book of St. Lucius.

I went on a blitz tonight with the LoER medical station I'm building. I didn't want it to be too clean, modern or spartan, so I looked in my bits boxes from some stuff to grimdark it up and still make it pretty high teach. These are all wall panels laying on their backs.

I'm pretty happy with my skulls as medical servitors.

I found a couple of old model car radiators that should make good wall monitors.

There's a workstation on the opposite wall.

And I got the textured floor mounted to foamcore.

Thanks, guys... I was worried about the monitor texture too. I think I'm going to try a black frame with the screen going from Warpstone Glow with a thinned Nuln wash to a progressively lighter Warpstone+white highlight all the way up to pure white, and then maybe some feeble OSL on the black frame. Looking for a Matrix-ey monochrome green look.

I was going to try to backlight one with a blue LED, but I'm down to my last coin cell switch and I have some other lighting ambitions on this project.

Last night saw some good progress... I was going to hold off on photos until I had undercoated everything, but it is hot, dry, and windy in Denver today, so no paint until later this week. Here's what's ready (or almost ready):

All four wall sections are basically done, with doorways cut and details glued down around where the furniture and other floor objects will go. Now that there's no spray paint window this weekend, I might add riveted trim around the door frames and maybe some cables out of bass guitar strings hanging off things.

I assembled some more floor pieces, namely the stack of crates suggested by Captain Brown and a little shrine to the God-Emperor. I set the shrine on a plinth of cork that I cut and beveled freehand, partly because I thought having a stone texture underneath it would set it off a bit, and partly because I needed something to stick the banner pole into without cutting into the floor.

Here's a rough mock-up of one of the four walls with its furniture and floor clutter.

I've also decided that the roof should be magnetized for easy removal, but with a secure fit during gameplay. I stuck magnets on either side of a strip of parchment paper, taking care to match the polarity. I put a ball of Green Stuff on each and mashed it flat. Then I cut lengths of styrene tube to fit over the glob of GS. When they cure, I'll see if they're secure or if they need a drop of CA glue to hold the GS. The corresponding magnets will mount to the inverted lid of the photo box for a roof. As an added bonus, the styrene posts will conceal the corners, so I don't have to cut the walls to a perfect fit. Which is good, because I definitely did not.

I'm deliberately leaving enough floor space in the medical station for a small melee in a narrative game, maybe a half-dozen smallish models. I'm not sure how that will work, but I want the option. That's why the detail is mostly wall-mounted with less on the floor.
