Hey Dakka!

I've been fervently into 40k and even dabbled in Fantasy a little ever since I started a few years ago. Recently though, my interest has been slipping heavily. I play CSM and I feel like my army is just boring as all hell compared the other armies. The fluff (in general) has seemed a lot more dull to me as well. One could say this is from overdose, but I haven't played a game since January. I've been thinking about starting a small necron force, but I'm not so sure I want to drop cash on 40k right now. What can I do to light the spark again? I don't want it to die out!

Cheers

Find a good gaming group and play some games with them. Check out some podcasts on 40k like the excellent The Independent Characters. Read some BL novels, preferably those by Aaron Dembski-Bowden or Dan Abnett.

I've read "A Thousand Sons" and "Fulgrim". I have "Legion" sitting around unread still. My 40k buds are mostly a tad younger than me and just getting out from school.

Sometimes a new army is what is needed. I also find CSM to be rather lacklustre this edition. I basically didn't play during most of 4th edition, due partially because I was in school with no job and no money, but also partly because I was just kind of tired of the army. I started Eldar towards the end of 4th, and the radical difference in play style (and fluff) between the two really rejuvenated my interest in 40k. Now towards the end of 5th I'm going back to chaos a little bit, with my sights set on Orks for the future. It also helps to have the ability to switch between different armies every few games, so it doesn't get too stale.

If you're wanting to get away from the chaos feel, I'd recommend not getting another MEQ army. Something like Eldar (Dark or otherwise), Guard, Orks, or Tau are quite different from the various MEQ armies, and though I don't have much experience with Necrons, I think they're fairly different as well.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

You could try proxying your army as another one, to see if you oile the look/feel of it.

CSM can pass for SM with spikes on pretty well, with a bit of imagination in transferring some units over.

If CSM just don't interest you at all any more, and yo can't get back into them, you could try an army swap on the Swap Shop, and see if the new army rekindles your interest.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

I started playing 40k in 1994 but in the last 10 years I have played about 15 games all up, most of the time was spent taking a break from it. Even when I started to get back into it I didn't play much, just plodded along painting and assembling. When I tried to start gaming more I was disappointed with the level of sportsmanship in the games with my friends; things like they forget to do something in the appropriate phase so I tell them it's ok and let them do it, but when I do the exact same mistake they absolutely refuse to let me do what I forgotten, telling me I am having a cry about it. Also, throw in some rage followed by awkward silence and dodgy measuring for assaults etc.

I have just gone back to painting and trying to develop my skills there. I'm certainly not at a professional level but I have read and watched many dvds on painting in the last 2 years trying to improve. Maybe concentrate more on painting and investigating more advanced techniques. When you regain interest you will have some nicely painted minis ready to go too. This may not be your solution but it has worked for me. Also, as of today I got the Dust Warfare rulebook to go with the Core set I have had lying around for ages. It looks very cool! So if you want to look for an alternative until you regain interest in 40k Dust might be your thing. Not that I am likely to play it, just collect the models, paint them and make some WW2 inspired terrain lol. Good Luck!

Here is MattRendar's thread on one of his Dust games I thought looked like fun. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/446280.page

I would recommend using things to proxy and try out different armies, you want to find one that is different from what you already have.

I started with Tau and found I didn't enjoy them, I then moved to blood angels and I really like them but I also wanted a non-marine army so I picked up necrons a when they were still in their old codex and I enjoyed the fluff, when they got their new codex I found I still enjoyed them now I have 2 armies I can switch between to help keep things interesting. I also found that the new necron codex plays the way I had really hopped the Tau would.

I havent had a chance to play dust but I watched a few games of it and it seemed like a good game, when I have some extra money I am planning to start playing that as well.

The CSM codex IS boring as hell, it's not just you I haven't played a game with my Chaos for years simply because I don't find them fun at the moment. I'm not even talking about being competitive and winning tourneys, Chaos were my first, and are still my favorite army and I much prefer playing fluffy lists, I couldn't care less about winning with them.

If you're not too fussed about winning, maybe consider starting a small Daemons army? That way if you ever get interested in Apocalypse, you'll have no problem using both armies together. Daemons ARE a good army (but the uber-popular GK are a real hard counter) and have the most unique play style of all the 40K armies, so if things are getting stale, they might be a good way to mix stuff up.

As others have said, a new army is the best way to get you back 40k-ing again, and going for somthing completely different is always a fun learning curve. If not Daemons, then maybe try a horde (orks, nids, IG) or one of the Eldar codecies for a fast but fragile army. If dropping a considerable amount of mmoney on a new army isn't really viable, my best advice would simply be to leave your 40k alone for a month or two. You'll probably get the itch again soon, and if 6th ed does come out as expected it will mix everything up to make it interesting again.

Have you lost interest in gaming, or does 40K not draw you in anymore? Could be you've outgrown it somewhat.

Shift onto playing other Games and systems. Look through some of the GW specialist games - Epic (hugely tactical over 40k), BFG (which you already play by the look of it), Blood Bowl (great fun and cheap), etc. How about trying different universes and games such as Warmachine, Dust, Dystopian Wars, etc.

Perhaps you just need a break from miniatures and wargaming in general?

Also, I find that playing more 2 on 1's or 2 on 2s or 1 on1 on 1 to be important to keeping things lively. Mixing the games up like that add to both the challenge and to the social side. Also, consider starting a campaign. Adding depth and strategy to a game that focuses on tactics opens things up a lot. Also, make sure you use very different forces when you play. It'll keep your list from getting stale and boring.

Try out a bunch of missions from the "Battle Missions" book, and play a few games of Planetstrike and Cities of Death.
