bit of a silly question, but I see folks say things like "I have 3k points of tau" or whatever and was wondering how to calculate that number. do you just add up the points for the biggest list you actually play or add up the points for all the models with the most expensive upgrades you have available or ... ?

cheers,

v

I do my points total as wysiwyg. So I have a total of 4688 points in BA.

so that's adding up every model and bit of kit you have for each, then?

I put the largest points value that I could & would play with the minis I have. So I've got a 2500 point SW army. If I decked them all out with wargear and added a couple of extra Wolf Lords just to see how many points I could get, then it would be more like 3500.

2500 pts

I actually have an apocalypse list of all models I'm able to field. I generally only count painted models. I'm at around 8k points worth of marines.

Yeah. So bolt pistol chain sword jump pack on my assault marines. (Grenades and the little spindly bits are hit and miss but I count the main weapons load out that I have glued on the model. I do have a few things magnetized but when calculating, I count what I use it most for on the table.

some of that is unpainted I have about a half company of unpainted tac marines + transports, maybe 30 unpainted bikers, and another 20 or so unpainted assault marines.

I just add up points of everything as I usually take it. Yes, my Rhinos COULD be 50 points a piece by saying they have Extra Armor, but I never take that upgrade anyway so they're 35 when I tally that total up.

Usually just what I would normally take on them (wargear wise) I dont see a point in throwing random wargear on to make a unit more expensive for the sake of having a bigger army.

You should add up points as per how you would run them in a list. If you always take extra armor on X vehicle, then calculating your points should include that.

Adding all the points up that a model could take doesn't work, because you wouldn't play the model like that.

Similarly, my Demon Princes are 225 points, rather than the 300+ they could be.

I just do the base value with zero upgrades.

I find that to be a better comparison than with upgrades. After all, depending on the points value of the game I'm playing I might equip them differently...

I add them by how I'd normally field them. For example, I field my rhinos with havoc launchers, so I factor that in.

I just estimate a suitably low number so I don't have to think about how much money I've spent nor how many points I'm only half-done painting.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

I would go by what I could feel comfortable fielding

I could easily field a stretched out 3k point list, but I at most can only be extremely competitive at around 1850, (used to be 2000-2500, but now that doubles your FOC, and I do not have a list for that XD)

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

You do realise that you don't have to double your FoC at 2000+ points?

I use the points value of the WYSIWYG model (which is also how I play them)

Yep, WYSIWYG for me here too. Though I take into account stuff which I usually take for which there is no visible gear (exarch powers, tank upgrades etc)

Like others here, I build an apoc list with everything in it (how I would normally run it).

I need to redo my list to get an accurate read atm to be honest.

Most of my units have a default configuration (say, 7 nobz always have 3 PK, 3BC and a doc). I always use those default point costs.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I just add up what I would play. I am sure I can get 3k out of my 2K army. I know I have more than 2500 in IG, but I stop at 2500, because i wont play more than that on a normal day, and because, if I keep going i can end up with like 3256 or something silly, and there has been very rare times I play a game with odd point numbers like that.
Back in the day, not so much, only because of Old One Eye and the Red Terror, I would keep those games at 1999, so I wont see both.
