Hey guys,

Been out of the hobby for a long while (close to a year), and after getting the 6th edition rulebook as a present, Im keen to dive back into the hobby and finish up some old projects. However, I noticed GW has replaced their old line (grumble) with a completely new paint line, with new names for old colours, as well as different categories (layer 1, 2, shades instead of washes, glaze, etc).
Before I try them out, I wanted to ask the Dakka community about their general views and opinions regarding the new GW paint range in terms of:

Compatibility with the old GW range - I know GW put up a colour comparison chart between the old and new paints, and I know Dakka has one somewhere here too. But I wonder if they are accurate for the most part? Are there any colours that just do not have a comparable colour within the new range? If I start using the new range on my old projects, will the differences be noticeable?

Are the new Shades comparable to the old Washes? - This is probably most important to me, since GW's washes are so integral to my painting process. Are the new shades different in any way? For example, I heard that one pass of the new Badab Black (Nuln Oil?) is about as dark as two passes of the old Badab Black.

Overall quality - Might be a bit too early to tell soon, but how's the overall quality been for the new range? Are the opinions/views on the new range generally positive? or are there negative aspects as well?

Any views/opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Lost in Australia, somewhere.

Old space wolves grey doesn't have an exact match in the new range, the equivalent paint being noticeably darker. So far it's the only one I've encountered with a seriously noticeable difference.

Overall, I feel these new paints are better, I just miss space wolves grey.

I really like the new paints, I returned to the hobby just before the changeover so I have some pots from the new style and the previous style
Before that, I left the hobby during the screw top pot phase :/ and lets face it they were shoddy at best! So worlds of improvement on the pots!
The brand new colour line I can'y fault. Just don't feel as if you need all of the shades available, I mix colours as often as possible, but for a uniform of an army a premixed pot of x colour is just a godsend for keeping it constant and matching.

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

Not that fond of the new range here, well perhaps fonder compared to the old gw paints, but the pots are rather annoying compared to for instance vallejo paint dropper pots.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

I've used all of them and i've now decided i'm moving over the Vallejo. Don't get me wrong the new GW paints i've used about 10 of them so far have been good.

I just prefer some of the colours you can get with Vallejo and the biggest selling point was dropper bottles.

If GW had gone to a dropper bottle i would of just brought all theirs and not had Vallejo

Have you noticed a slight change in final dried colors in comparison to gw? I also have a lot of gw paints, and now since a week or so like 9 colors from Vallejo and they dry up to be a much nicer gradation of color compared to gw paints (although i must add that my gw paints are mostly dried out and revived. And 3 new bottles i bought about 2 weeks ago from a gw store nearby are extremely thick and almost hard paint).

I must say that I do like the Vallejo paints better I've found some of the gw paint lumpy and thick which is ok once I've thinned it but that's not as easy as it is with the Vallejo droppers

My exact thoughts. I'm rather pleased with the Vallejo paints, although i wonder how easy the paint comes out of the bottle once its almost depleted.

I've found that the new GW paints are infinitely better than the old ones. I've never used any brand other than the citadel ones though, so I dont know how the compare in that respect.

Most of the colours I've used are a decent match (only a few are perfect, but 7 times out of 10 it's not really noticable). The only big difference I've come across personally is that there's no match for for the old Merchrite (sp?) red foundation paint.

I don't like the new paints and still find, as I always have, that P3, VGC, VMA and MSP to be superior. The one thing I am a fan of from GW is the new washes, simply because they give a different effect when dry than they used to, which can be helpful.

I'm a big fan of the new foundation paints, not a fan of the layers. I understand what they were going for with the layers, but the way they're mixed they're pathetic for anything BUT highlighting. If you want to lay down a basecoat and there's no foundation colour that fits the bill, using a layer to put down a basecoat is annoying.

As far as colour matching, it really depends on the colour. Some colours are really good matches, others not so good. I found mechanicus standard grey was pretty close to adeptus battlegrey, though not a perfect match it's hard to tell the difference. Other colours don't match nearly as well, Celestra Grey and Astronomicon grey are actually quite different.

Unless someone does a comprehensive review, you won't know until you buy it and try it unfortunately.

I'd like to thank everybody for their replies.
I did a bit more looking around, and it seems the general view of the new paint range has been positive (at least for those not experienced with other paint ranges, like Vajello).

Since I dont have much options in the way of buying other paint ranges locally, I think Ill stick to GW's and give it a try. If it's bad enough, I'll start looking for alternatives.
