I assaulted a unit of marines with my Dred, which unless I miss my guess, is what the Dred is for. The marines each got a chance to land a grenade on the dred. 10 krak grenades. Obviously, the Dred exploded.
What is the option here? The Dred MUST engage in CC. If most MEQ have grenades standard, where does that leave the Dred? Shelf? Or am I doing it wrong?

I suppose it means that you'll have to give your deff dread a "buddy" unit. That unit engages in a charge first, drawing overwatch from the unit. Then the deff dread assaults, and since the unit can't overwatch more than once, it gets in safely. That said, they have gotten a lot harder to use.

He's talking about assault results. Walkers are hit on weapon skill now. Which sucks.

basically dreads are no longer combat monsters if the enemy has any sort of serious grenades. even assulting something with a powerfist equivalent is dangerous since they hit so much more easily than they used to.

That was my fear. This is really disheartening, since I just finished my 11 walkers and was looking forward to some stompy stompy fun time. Now I more or less can't use them unless I want to throw the game.
Which may still be worth it, just to see my army on the field.

Wow... I never realized how utterly screwed walkers are in CC now. Is there an army without grenades standard? I mean, even if it's "Just" MEQs, that's still around a solid 70% of armies you'll see.

Do necron's have Grenades?

Deff Rolla them until they are grey goo. Apply boyz to flavor. Serve over ice.

No but with gauss you would be hard pressed to get anything with an armor value that close in the first place.

Well they need 4's to hit (Dread has WS4), and 6's to remove a HP (FA=12, and the KG hit at S6+D6). So they're not totally useless in cc. They weren't very good before, but they should be losing less than 1 HP per round of combat on average even against a squad of 10 MEQ all with Krak Grenades. And that number will get less and less the more Marines you massacre each round. Unless I'm reading something wrong.

It takes a WS4 unit 36 attacks with krak grenades on average to destroy a dread. The odds of your opponent wasting a dread before it can strike with a 10 man squad is only 23%. Kans are what really took the nerfing, dying to only 9 krak on average. Dreads can still compete in CC, but they are considerably more fragile than in 5th, particularly versus 5 point meltabombs.

Good thing Meltabombs go at I1.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

My marine dreads feel relegated to more of a tactical role, fielding heavy weapons and the option of melee instead of guns ablazing lets go punch stuff in the face (riflemen etc aside )
As far as orks go, the deff dread doesn't seem really capable of stepping into that effective shooting role, low BS and lack of strong ranged weapons (compared to marines PC, AC, LC etc...)
There just seems to be better choices from the slot now with the nerf =\

You need to pick your targets. Either way, you shouldn't worry that much about krak grenades, needing 4's, that tends to be only 6 hits, with one of those being a 6. That's a single hull point. Big deal.

Another thing to consider about Dreads is haywire grenades. 5 wyches with Haywire grenades will punk a dread before he gets to swing quite often. Almost guaranteed if the Wyches get the charge (and pitch a 'nade in the preceding shooting phase.)

Now, DE are the only ones with access to these grenades at the moment, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and make the prediction that we'll be seeing more of them in upcoming codices.

This mainly speaks of BA dreads but it goes to any cc dread to be honest... Unless its Apoc, I don't think I will get much use out of my dreads now.

Why was that squad ten models when you charged it?

Combined arms is key, especially in 6th. FIRST soften up that target with other shooting THEN assault it.

I notice that people are charging big enemy units and getting shot up with overwatch and then complaining "the assaut is dead". This isnt 5th anymore. You need to chew up a target with fire first so that when you charge it it's overwatch is ineffective.

I tend not to charge more than five marines with my deff dreads, and if I have the option I'll go after enemy vehicles first...

I'd never really considered a Dredd as something suitable to charge 10 marines even in 5th Ed, unless it also had 1 or 2 flamers to soften them up a bit first.

1 Skorcha and 1 extra DCCW is a solid loadout. I was able to destroy a marine squad with one in 6th already. He's still hard to kill with Krak Grenades... they need to roll a lot of 6's to do it.
