Whatever, I'm just clawing for XP to get a nicely levelled character with some neat bling by the time October rolls around and gives us what I'm really looking forward to: Coop.

I already preordered the game. Ill get all the DLC's. I will probably spend countless hours on multiplayer using either a Sons Of Medusa/ Dusk Raiders marine or a Death Guard/ Alpha Legion chaos space marine.
That said my college GPA will go down this fall.

Talk about how the multiplayer works a bit? I know there are public and private matches, right? I think I saw that on the videos I've seen anyway. Is the matching fast? How is the network code, laggy, stable?
I'm not a big MP player so I can't comment on speed but the games for the most part ran without trouble and were a nice cozy mess of gore and screaming weapons. I did notice that it takes a while before you get into the game, though this could be linked to the host.
And yes, there is a private match option, which also allows you to earn XP, much to my surprise and to the disgust of some.
Gore? I thought gore was removed from MP.

As a side note, the complaints about the meltagun are really unfounded. They function pretty much as described in the Cain books, and are VERY limited in ammunition. One shot per melta cannister, and ten cannisters total. But they're utterly deadly in single player at least. It replaces the stalker boltgun in SP. The animation of Titus killing off an 'Ard Boy is hilariously awesome, heh.

People complained about it being effectively a shotgun. Which it is. An anti-tank shotgun. It kills everything it sees.

Not really a shotgun IMO, spread is far to wide, range to short, damage to high, reload times to long.... It kicks butt though. It's the easiest weapon to get the 10 kills in slowmo achievement with too. Just mob them up, and blam!

Is there a toggle on the console version for friendly fire? What options do you have when when setting up a console game? From the pre release info, we're only getting 5 maps. What do they look like generally?

Those of us whom have the game on Steam, add me. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198043766139 If the game's public matchmaker goes down again, I'll be glad to host private matches with my friends. My internet is quite stable, and I don't run crap in the background while I play..

I'll be more specific:
Shattered Bridge is a HUGE fething highway, partially demolished with crashed thunderbirds and fightabommas. It has multiple levels with holes in the various levels, and three control points. The map has plenty of cover and multiple levels, although the lower levels are rarely used (assault marines prefer the top level obviously) so they're great for flanking attacks. It's fairly linear in its design, but it's just beautiful and fun to play on. Three points, one in front of each default spawn, one in the middle.
Hab Center has a central open area with lots of pillars and statues for cover, with two habitation areas on north-south that have three levels and the wall facing the open area mostly blasted out, and fortified areas east-west which must be assautled directly instead of from long range like the north-south parts. Various walls, pillars, and levels provide for plenty of cover and ambush locations. Four points, one in each of the described areas.
Basilica is the same general setup as Hab Center in the location of its points, but is situated entirely indoors in a dark, well, basilica. There's a central bridge which leads from one spawn to the other and the central area is open for sniping for those traveling between the two central middle points-- the two middle points themselves have their own rooms but are otherwise fairly open, on raised platforms with only a pillar to hide behind, so your team really needs to secure the doors to keep those points. Various piles of crates and multiple levels provides for plenty of cover. Four points, one at each spawn, two midway between each spawn, on either side of the map.
Waste Management is an open indoors map, which has tons of graffiti, concrete, and rust on it looking like it was used by gangers or orks. Its three points are positioned diagonally across the map, with spawn points at north and south, and each point at southwest, central, and northeast. As before, there's multiple levels, and the central point is on a bridge between spawns which still has some defensible walls to allow peopel to cap it, forcing you to either change firing positions if they hide behind them or assault the point directly yourself. The other points have multiple entrances and are easier to take, but close to the enemy's spawn, so also relatively easy to defend. The map has less cover than the previous maps, but still enough that devastators don't entirely dominate. Three points, as described before.
Manufactorum is is a mostly open map, with the central area in open skies with lots and lots of crates and etc to maneuver around and hide behind, and the manufactorum itself surrounding the central area, with spawn points north-south, capture points east-west and central. The two east-west capture points are fairly easy to defend, while the central point is usually the most hotly contested, as it has lots of firing lanes and open skies for assault marines to attack from. You can almost snipe from spawn to spawn, and it's often a good idea to flank through the building. A great balance between cover and open space, although the map has essentially just one floor with some occasional higher walkways in a sort of bowl shape around the central point, which itself is quite vulnerable but easy to defend once captured. Three points, as described before.
Screenshots are incoming.

Click the thumbnails to get the full image.
Shattered Bridge, shown jumping in the air near the Space Marine spawn.
Waste Management, viewing its rather and highly contended for open middle point.
A look at Manufactorum's central storage area, which is similarly fought over.
Hab Center, showing the open central area and the view of the two hab centers themselves. That red glow is a shield protecting the Chaos Marine spawn. The various points themselves are mostly enclosed ,but the central area is not, which makes for interesting games.
And finally:
It's hard to provide a good image of this area, as it does not have merely one focus. If it did though, it'd be this central passage, which while it doesn't have the point, grants easy acecss to all four points utilizing the lower ground path and the upper bridge (there's also paths below the bridge). The other parts of the map have much more cover, too. Automatically Appended Next Post: Soladrin wrote:Gotta love the free network...
Matchmaking in general for Space Marine is extremely hit and miss right now. It often simply doesn't work.

Shattered Bridge is definitely the winner and best map in the multiplayer. The visuals are striking, the fighting is fierce, and the map has plenty of both open space AND cover, allowing all classes to fight to their optimal power.
