Been playing around with army builder, with CSM with ork allies, you can pump out over 300 models in a list.
At what point does model count get obscene. I know when playing 150 man ork lists, I get lots of grumbling.

300 becomes cussingly obscene. I'd say 180 for orks and 60+ for MEQ armies will become somewhat obscene.

Heck, 200+ zombies backed by shooting may well be Chaos' best build.

I played orks the other day at 4k points, they had over 200 models and I had 80 odd, at the end there was 6 orks left on the table while I had around 40 left on turn 6.

I have played 130 orks with 3 looted tanks at 1850, end of the game there was 2 orks left with a looted tank with no turret and I had full tac squad, 3 hyperios (out of 3) 5 scouts and 2 assault marines with cap and sang priest left. i had 54 models at the start

200 models at 4k points doesn't sound like very many.

4k points:

Dual Force Org CSM Plague Zombies:

Typhus (230)
420 Zombies (1800 pts)
60 Havocs (840 pts)

Guard Allies
HQ (50)
10 Leaders (2x platoons) (60)
100 Conscripts (400 pts)
100 Guardsmen (500pts)

And you still have 120 points for a few options.

That would be nearly 700 models though, most with FNP, a few MEQ models, and lots of orders thrown around for fun.

If you consider 1" distance to spread out, that model count could cover about 3150 square inches (conservatively), or about 91% of a standard battlefield (or, more than 100% after most standard terrain placements).

If you end up with a lot of models by having larger units that are not fearless, it isn't all that great.

Large Body Count only helps if the units are either Fearless, or where you end up with LOTS of units.
IG gets lots of units, Tau can get 18 units in troops for 840 points (6 units of fire warriors, 6 transports, and 6 units of detached drones).

That 4K chaos list looks pretty good. Just cut it in half.
Typhus (230)
210 Zombies (900)
30 Havocs (420)
IG HQ (50)
5 Leaders (1 platoon) (30)
50 Guardsmen (250)

Still have 120 points for upgrades.
296 models, @ 1880 points.

For 1170 points you could have 180 necrons on the board. Well, let's say for 1300 points you could have 181 necrons (need HQ after all).

While initially this looks like a tough list to beat, it'll have some VERY hard counters that are nigh on - if not actually - impossible to beat.

Namely, any kind of vehicle with a half-decent AV - especially hard-to-hit Flyers, and Walkers that will tie entire Fearless units down - will completely resist the small-arms fire that typically comes with these units. Worse, units like Zombies and Fire Warriors can't even take upgrades to take them out.
As well as this, high Toughness creatures (I'm thinking of the Wraithlord in particular) will be untouchable by most of the list.
Lastly, templates and blast markers of any kind will whittle the list down fast - you simply can't spread out that kind of force on a standard size table.

This may not seem like much consolation when every other unit dies, but I can see certain lists being able to completely deny any objectives to the foe simply by standing near.

Yes,you can really beat any list if you know well in advance what your facing. But flyers would have a hard time and can be ignored bc the board would be flooded with gants and will be forced to hover if they can. Everything will get bogged down especially small/ elite armies who can only destroy one unit with shooting and can only dish out so many wounds. Monstrous creatures would have a hard time vs all the poison. FNP will help plenty.

I don't think it ever becomes obscene. I'd like to see a person with 300 models win a game of 40k. Their force concentration would be so wretched, and their vulnerability to blast weapons so high that the army would basically trip all over itself in its deployment zone and get butchered before it really got anywhere. Emperor protect if the opponent has one of the hard counters to horde armies.

That's why my smart money is on SiTNW conscripts. If you have a single squad of 50, they have the opportunity to ACTUALLY be up to 350, depending on how the game goes. And you don't have a cluttered deployment zone, and you don't have to friggin buy and paint 350 models.

Oh, and it's only 275 points. The possibility of paying fewer than one point per model? Yes please!

Went to a timed 2hr 15min per round tournament. Brought the following list as a joke. I think this is all of it, going from memory. Long story short, thought it would get some good laughs, and I knew I could play it quickly against what I THOUGHT were going to be the main meta (mainly MEQ/TEQ)

Local nid player looks at my list "hey thats hilarious, I should try that!"

2 tervigons, a doom of malanthai, and 180 God#&*@'D gaunts later, and I've unintentionally trolled the entire tourney by giving the nid guy the idea to literally flood the table in gaunts. As punishment, I drew him round 1. We barely finished turn 2 (let's see you move a 350 models a turn and finish a game in under 2 hours) Nothing against him, he's a hilarious guy and fun to play (we're actually planning on finishing that match sometime soon) but I dont think anyone could've played that list in a timed tourney without losing their sanity.

Moral of the story, casual games, sure go ahead. They can't stop you. Just make sure you KNOW HOW TO PLAY QUICKLY. That's what makes people hate horde players. An experienced player can move almost as quickly as a smaller army. An inexperienced one can take what should be a fun game and turn it into a hellish test of patience and sanity. Nothing seems to grind people's gears like a movement phase thats over half an hour long. This goes double for tournaments since you have a time limit. If you want to try the super fantastic swamp them in bodies superhappyfuntime strategy, start in small games. At max, 1,000pts. Any more, and it's just way to much for an inexperienced player to handle. And by inexperienced, I dont just mean new to the game. If all you've played is marine armies, you'll need the practice just as much as a new guy.

So yeah, if you can play quickly, knock yourself out. If not, taking a massive model count army is just going to make people hate you

From my experience (on both sides of one of these lists) it mostly becomes annoying because it takes forever to move all of those models and makes that game take much longer than it should.

I hereby name your list 9 constipated mamas

Perfect day aside lower than average luck would be 60 gaunts turns into 150 turn 1, then 195 turn 2, then 217 turn 3, then 228 turn 4, and by turn 5 the real issue becomes how do you knock 200+ gaunts and 54 wounds of tervigon off the objectives?

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.
