Hoping this is the right forum for this question.

What is the worst rule you have gotten wrong while playing a game? You were sure the Codex said something to that effect, you did not bother to check it and your opponent did not challenge you, and you found out later that is not how it's supposed to be.

This seems to be happening to a lot of people with 6th edition rules, and it has happened to me a few times. The worst was with a Daemon Prince, I played him in a couple games where I was certain he was supposed to be rolling on the boon table after each challenge he won. Opponents were goggle eyed as he massed up FnP, rerolled armor saves, poisonous attacks, +1 to his stats, etc. Only, he lacks the special rule that gives him the rolls, so I was way off target. Won some games I shouldn't have.

How about yours?

During my first games I thought that the "To hit table" worked just like the "To wound table":
Attacker with WS3 only hits a target with WS4 on 5+

No one complained though. ^^

Worst thing I got wrong was thinking FRFSRF added the extra shots to ALL the weapons in the squad not just the lasguns.

3-4 Autocannon shots?
2-3 Lascannon shots?

Yeah that won me games much more than I should have. Funny thing is, none of my opponents ever doubted me or asked to see the rule. They just let me go with it. *shrug*

I thought my Broadside suits had jet packs. Didn't figure it out until after 2 games. Fortunately never really became a factor, but kind of embarrassing.

I misunderstood the Night Fighting rules, thinking that if they came into play turn one, they were in play all game. :( My Dark Eldar were very sad and my opponent was very happy when the reality came "to light."

For about 4 games in a row i Drop podded Bjorn the fellhanded, which is illegal, on the fifth game i was called out on it and it was awkward because my opponent didnt know me and thought it all was a deliberate plan to cheat.

This was in fifth so in the four presceeding games bjorn had been put right in the middle of the enemy forces and i won games largely because of the mayhem he wrecked.

After sixth came out, I read about the new dual pistol rule in shooting and combat. Somehow, I got it stuck in my head that Blood Angels assault troops could dual wield bolt pistols. Turns out they can't.

Separate incident: I initially thought that Sternguard special ammo was S7 AP3....turns out its S4 AP3.

When I first assembled my Lychguards, I gave them swords and shields. Then, in every game, I went around trying to get as close as I could to the enemy with them without assaulting, hoping to get shot at so I could reflect the shot back. Strangely, no one would shoot at me if I was within 6 inches. I must have played half a dozen or so games before it was pointed out that you MUST take the best save possible which meant I could no longer choose the 4+ invuln instead of the 3+ armor.

After that, I took them with warscythes, even though they were still modeled with the sword/shield. After a few games of that, I decided to take them apart and put on the warscythes. It turns out though that even though I assembled them using super glue, at some point one of the arms came off and I used plastic glue to put it back on. Trying to get it apart made a mangled mess of the arm. Oh well, my new box of Lychguards came in yesterday! Woo!

two things I got wrong.

6th edition night fighting. I thought that >24" gave stealth and shrouding. So I was running Tau and getting 2+ cover while my enemy only got base because of my night vision units.

Jet packs. My friend, who plays Tau now, got me into 40K when he was playing BA. I was playing Tau and I was trying to figure out how I could land on top of buildings. He told me that I'd need to move vertically however many inches the building was. Which confused me a lot. I could move 6" and land on the other side of a 10" wall, but not 3" and land on top of it.

We actually never cleared that up until the other month. I pointed out how silly it was, he agreed. Still wonder how much I actually limited my mobility with that.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

For the first 2 games in 6th I thought exorcist were 4 hull points instead of 3. Read the bs4 too quick. Wasn't a factor but really embarrassing being the only sisters player. Was told St Celestine was eternal warrior. That one game did affect the outcome. Know better now.

I suddenly feel a lot less anxious about that first roll as IG.

Night fighting seemed to be a tough thing to figure out te saves relating to distance. Now that I have played 6th a fair amount, it is easy.

I played my hydra with interceptor rule the first two games. After sixth. Then, read the FAQ more thoroughly and found I was wrong. Those poor storm talons and doom scythes burned to the ground when they shouldn't have.

Oh lets see how about when me and my brother were playing and his drop pod scattered off the table. He rolled a 6 on mishap table, which is good! But we had the table backwards so it was bad We got it sorted out afterwards though.

I've done fast annihilation barges, too. The best time had to be when I tried to 18 inch flat-out two of them out of terrain on turn one. They both rolled dangerous and ate dirt. Karma I guess?

I had the stats on a Tau Hammerhead's plasma cannon wrong for 3 games in a row, rating it at AP 2 instead of AP 3. the result radically affected the outcomes of each of those games.

I used to think that in a close combat, a unit gets to make all of its attacks against each unit that it was locked into combat with.

Very first game of 40K, back in 2nd Edition. My friend (also his first game) and I thought that if you won the close combat, and followed up into another unit, then you fought again, in the same assault phase. So, Kharne chewed through half my army in one assault phase. We learned our mistake afterwards.

It still confuses me :(

I typically dont get many rules wrong, as I really dont like feeling I may have shafted my opponent (play for fun, winning comes second). But I did recently screw up the rules thinking SM Drop Pods could NOT fall off/mishap off the table edge due to inertial guidance system. Woops.

My worst was in 5th: first tourney I went to, checked the rulebook and couldn't find the rule that swarms couldn't take objectives, so I ran with 2 units of Nurglings as my troops, giving me tons of points for Greater Daemons, Fiends, Flamers, Seekers, Daemon Princes...you get the drift. I walked over everyone there, because nobody knew how to deal with Daemons, and because I had so many big gribblies out. Won the tournament, got home, hopped in the tub (it was winter, love a good, hot bath!) and brought the rulebook in with me. First thirty seconds I found the area where swarms can't take objectives...fail. No, I did not return the prize (as I already spent it). Lol. Probably should have...but everyone there was a friend of mine, and they had all been playing 40k for years. I was brand new.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It was in an apoc game, I used the death company formation that gets the blood talon rule for generating more attacks. I had a chaplain with them and used the reroll to hit and wound, and they all had power weapons, I was rerolling all my generated attacks as well. A 10 man squad wiped an 18 man 1k sons squad in 1 turn. I still feel bad even though it was a friendly game.
