So I have been kicking around the idea of buying back into 40k. I have set myself up with wanting to play the BA army as well. I have taken the time to look at bits in order to do some custom conversion etc. Now after reading and reading some and seeing posted list. I am about to fall over to think that some of the things going on in 40k are just that wacked out this time around in 6th. Left the game in late 5th but wow,, what the hell kinda crank was GW thinking when they typed up 6th.

Am I just not seeing 40k threw the trash of 6th ed? Anybody able to give me some input on why I should not wait for 7th to fix what I am looking at?
Need some advice from the vets of 6th as to why I should drop 500ish for a army...

It just seems that 6th is really that crappy of an ed?

First and foremost "waiting for seventh" is likely going to be something like four or five years. If you want to play the game, then play the game. I know I couldn't wait around that long.

What about 6th don't you like?

I actually like 6th.

I would start playing now unless you'd like to wait a few years.

At first when switching over from 5th to 6th, I was kinda disappointed but as time went on I've come to like 6th much more than 5th. Just takes some time getting used to is all. Of course I play Crons so being able to glance vehicles to death with ease just makes my day hehe

6th is different, but I wouldn't say its worse. Some of the more annoying things will probably mellow out as new codices come out. Meanwhile, I feel like 6th cleaned up a lot of stuff that long hasn't made sense (like having a single model in a squad move making the entire squad count as moving, among countless examples).

The problem with 6th is that while they fixed a bunch of stuff, they didn't do it in a way that left the game terribly balanced. Better, cleaner mechanics, but it did change the game a bit, and not necessarily in the best ways.

That said, I wouldn't wait for another five years or whatever until 7th comes out. Just because there is room for improvement in 6th doesn't actually make it bad, nor does it make it worse than 5th ed.

Well, personally, I hate 6th edition, and I've quit the game until a decent edition comes out, whenever that may be. The simple realization is: If you don't like the game, don't play it. There are plenty of other, better miniature games (and miniature lines!) out there if you have that tabletop itch.

It may be worth your while to actually try a few demo games at a store or with some friends before you decide to commit or not.

As for 7th edition and those after it, keep in mind that it might not magically be better than 6th. Considering GW's current attitude and the direction they've been moving in the past few years, things could possibly get even worse with future editions. So if you still have stuff, go ahead, hold on to it and have hope, but if not, no point in buying a bunch of stuff, playing a game you hate, and hoping that it gets better one day.

Why would you play a game that you hate?

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

I might come back to 40k when 7th rolls around but the realist in me denies this possibility.

The 40k models stay mostly in the cupboard of shame - even though my club is pretty much mostly only playing 5th ed still (I started to hate the game in that edition) and there they will stay until I can convert up profiles for other games for them.

I sat out most of 2nd ed (although it was mostly because of not having the time ) and the game survived. 3rd was a change that I got used to - but 6th is just 3.5 edition (3rd edition brought in "trial" CC and vehicle rules which pretty much became 4th ed, and 5th and 6th have just poked and prodded the core rules which are still essentially unchanged from 3rd.)

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

The 6th edition is different from the former. However, the rule set is a bit more complete since now rules for allies, flyers, buildings, and terrain (special rules for woods and waters included) are included. Moreover, there are now six standard missions mixed with three deployments to choose from. This is some kind of progress.

6th Ed is great. I have some shooty armies, some assault based ones, some footsloggers, and some Mec ones. Despite the whining and moaning of the interwebz, my Mec force of assault units with heavy vehicles from the "bad" codex is doing great (quite the streak actually), and I play at two FLGS and one club (not against a BF in my garage).

The point being that Internet forums are usually full of whines and butthurt over pet lists/tactics that didn't survive the change. Most people you talk to in RL like 6th. It's just the donkey-cave, mouth breather, neck beards that think this is the worst edition ever (see, I'm only posting to complain, and I'm hyperbolizing everywhere... Which is what forums breed).

Most of the people enjoying 40k are using their free time to play, not whining about their pet DE list that isn't broken anymore.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

If it is not grabbing you, try out some of the other games out there. Infinity has free rules online and you can get a 300 point force (the largest point game people tend to play - generally around 10 models) for well under £100 (my 300-400 point Nomad force was £65 from what I remember).

If you want larger scale games, check out things like Warmachine, or historicals like Flames of War (or one of the many other WWII games out there which are often free or only a few £ to get a copy of the rules for). Hell, you could play historical games from any era for very little outlay.

Wow. That's one of the most pointlessly vitriolic posts I've read on this, or any other forum.

I voted yes. If you are that upset over 6th edition, and will not enjoy it, and will make your opponents not enjoy it by bitching during games, find something else to do for the next few years.

Bottom line: this is a game, designed for enjoyment, if you will not get that out of it, give it up and find something you will enjoy.

I have to agree somewhat.

On here for instance, I have seen TONS of hate of 6th.
Anyone I have ever played or met in person has enjoyed it, even if they are an active player or not (so you can't say that "Oh, well the people who don't enjoy it aren't playing!", which I guess is true, even people who aren't playing have said they enjoy 6th.)

If just comes down to personal preference.

Do you enjoy a bit more random and cinematic like game-play to have fun with friends? If so, 6th is a better bet for you

Do you enjoy more "strict" and straight forward rules that are built for more competitive play? If so, you may want to wait a bit to see how things with 7th go. Or just roll-back an edition and play with friends. OR, if you really want to play something then try out another game. Sci-Fi wise, Infinity, Warmachine, and the like are good games. More historically you have Bolt-Action and Flames of War, all good games.

Pretty much this. There is no answer we really can give other than "It's up to you". 6th Edition is what it is. The reason for this "I see so many people hating it on the internet and so many people loving IRL" is because the people that hate it are going to post hate messages about it. It's something called the "Vocal Minority" and the "Silent Majority" depending on how you see things. I'm not saying the people who dislike 6th edition have lesser opinions but they do seem to be in the minority.

6th edition is a fairly good edition as these things go; it managed to get rid of the dominant strategy of transport rushes and set up what is actually a fairly balanced metagame barring financial unavailability of flyers/anti-aircraft for some factions. I like that it's encouraging mobility rather than two sides running forward and beating on each other; I could see games moving off their initial battle lines these days.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
