Three Color Minimum
|
I'm a newbie to 40K, and after a few false starts I've settled on a mixed army of chaos space marines and chaos daemons - mostly dedicated to Slaanesh. I'm currently working on a squad of daemonettes and a squad of possessed chaos space marines.
Below is my first finished and based daemonette.
Like I said, I'm a newb, so any and all feedback is very much appreciated. I know there are some things I need to touch up (the superglue, the hair and and armour, for starters), but I'm happy with how she came out. I have a lot of Plans for the rest of my daemonettes, mostly involving them interacting with plants and vines on the base, but I'll get to those as I make more progress.
My plan is to keep this blog updated every couple of days or so, to keep myself on track with getting everything done.

D'awwww, thank you everyone for you nice comments. I really appreciate them.
Update time:
Here are some rough progress shots of what I’ve been up to over the past couple of days. The armless daemonette is going to be my musician (although I’m not particularly proud of her, which is why she’s on hold for a while. Tangentially, she also dried very shiny and I'm not sure why, I painted her the same way I painted all my other daemonettes and none of them are shiny at all. Anyone have any ideas?).
The other three I batch painted, and I’m pretty happy with them. They still have some small details to finish, and a few bits to touch up. I’m still working on the technique for their armour. Those tiny engravings are driving me crazy. Once I’ve touched those up, I can get to the fun part - basing them. These ones are going to have a lot more plant/vine action going on, so keep a look out for that.
I’ve had my eye on the chaos spawn for a while now, and since today was payday (woo!) I ordered myself two sets. I also impulse-ordered myself a Slaanesh daemon fiend at the same time (whoops!). Looking forward to getting those soon.

They look great mate. I like the icon bearer and her crazy green eyes. I like the base too. The poisonous looking leaves really suit the Daemonettes.

Wow, thanks for the link. I'll have to sit down and read through it when I've got the time. It looks great.
And yeah, the plant theme is going to carry through all of my daemonettes. It's a lot of fun, and it makes them a bit more interesting (visually and fluff-wise). All of the daemonettes are going to have bright green eyes, I just haven't done the rest yet.

Oh geez. Hopefully soon. I've put off painting them because I've been really indecisive about how I want their armour to look. Although now I've settled on a Slaanesh-themed warband, that's narrowed it down for me.

Another WIP shot of my next daemonette, and the end result of a nerve-wracking half hour or so of green stuff work. Once the green stuff has cured, I’m going to go in and neaten the sculpted parts, possibly using some liquid green stuff, then paint. The vines are going to be the same bright green, blending in to orange for the arrows at the ends. There’s also going to be another pair of purple leaves in the back to help cover the part where the wires are stuck to the base.
I had planned to also share a WIP of one of my possessed (since it was requested), but something went wrong when I was shading the armour and it dried very streaky, so I'm going to start fresh with it today and hopefully have something to show next update.

Thanks. I feel like the daemonettes on their own can be a bit eh, but the bright bases really help them pop.
AAAAAND UPDATE!
The second daemonette is done. I’m not one hundred per cent happy with the vines on the base, so I may come back to it in the future. I love how fierce she looks, though. Oh and one of the leaves fell off on the back while the photos were being taken, so don't mind that.
And a WIP of my first possessed. I call this guy "the mouth" for obvious reasons. I need to hilight the armour edges and details, shade and hilight the bones, do the exposed muscle tissue, give him green eyes and any other small details I missed. I'm pretty happy with how he’s coming so far.
Any and all feedback is appreciated.

The Daemonette is cool. I also like the contrasting colour you've given the base, very eye catching as I agree that Daemonettes just look dull on their own.
And yay! You showed us some possessed! He's awesome. He must be expensive to live with what with his four mouths to feed
Keep up the good work

Thanks Nashbashem. And I wouldn't know about feeding him, given he has a chunk of crystal and a claw for hands, I don't really know how he eats. I just let the warp take care of that.
Having a long weekend means I've been far more productive than usual, so here's another update.
I got my third daemonette based. I’m much happier with the vines on this one. It helped that I had access to florist’s wire this time, which proved much more co-operative.
I've got one more daemonette painted and ready to base, she'll probably have a similar arrangement. Then I've got four more file daemonettes to paint and base, as well as their captain and working out what I'm going to do with the musician.
I also finished the mouth.
He's still not based because I haven't worked out how I want to base my possessed yet, I have the beginnings of a plan for basing the entire warband but I've still got some scheming to do before I solidify anything. I'm definitely happy with the colour scheme, that will stay the same for all of my possessed. I really like the gold touches and the crystal arm, they seem really indulgent and appropriate for Slaanesh. I also deliberately kept everything apart from the armour looking as much like things from the natural world as possible, I love the idea of chaos taking everyday things, and things that we treasure, and turning them against us.
Speaking of warband, here's an updated list of what I'm planning. Bear in mind that this isn't a game-strategic army, I'm more interested in models I'll have fun painting and coming up with fluff for.
Bought so far - four chaos spawn, one Slaanesh daemon fiend, a squad of wood elf dryads and a branchwraith (to count as chaos daemons, an idea shamelessly stolen from another poster here on dakka. I'm planning to do some converting to tie the dryads in with the way I'm basing the daemonettes, and make the branchwraith look more like a daemonette).
Planning to buy - Emperor's Children noise marines, an Emperor's Children lord and Lucius the Eternal, a Forgeworld keeper of secrets, and some (fallen) Sisters of Battle, who I also imaging as chilling with the daemonettes.
Long update is long, but hopefully it gives a better idea of what I have planned.

Nice work Good to hear that the florist wire worked better for you. Basing is just as inportant as the paint job on your model so it's good idea to have a think on it like you are doing.
Nice list of things to buy as well. I wish you luck with the Forge World Keeper of Secrets. A beautiful model.
Keep up the good work

Long time, no update. Awk-ward....
I've been doing stuff, I promise. Mostly batch painting some more possessed, which has proved so dull I'm going to go back to painting mini by mini.
I've also been working on a test conversion model.
I'm super happy with how this guy is turning out. He still has a bit of green stuff work to go (the chainsword arm and the gun are blu tacked on, hence the weird angles), then painting. I don't know what chapter the poor guy is going to be from, but I know I want it to be something recognisable and something that will make the bright green vines look good. Any suggestions for the paintjob, or the overall conversion? If it's not quite clear from the pictures, the idea is that this is the armour of a marine who died on the battlefield being puppeteered by the same vines that my daemonettes are able to summon.
This guy is one of the pop together marines from a starter kit, so I couldn't do a lot with the pose. So long as he looks alright when painted, I'll be getting a squad of five tactical marines to modify the same way. I'll post some step by step pictures of how it's done when I'm working on those, as this guy I really just made up as I went along.

This army is off to a great start, for a newbie you can handle a brush. Really liking the vine bases, very refreshing, Im also liking the newest model? Is he another Possessed or an objective marker? Or did you just build him cos you can?

Thanks guys.
Whoops, that's the part I forgot to mention. The newest guy is going to play as a possessed marine. The original idea was to just build a terrain piece/objective marker from marine armour, but then my boyfriend suggested this conversion idea and I liked it so much better.
My eventual plan is to build a squad of them. But there was definitely an aspect of doing it because I can, I love modelling and it was really fun to hack up a loyalist

Well, you've met the mouth. Now meet... the eyes!
With a face like that, well... What else could I call him?
I'm really happy with how I went picking out the small details and doing some directed hilighting. Not so much with the fire arm of the smoothness of the armour, both of those are things I'lll need to work on.
Again, he's not based as I'm still working on how I'm going to base all of my possessed to make them look like a group.
In other exciting news, my box of dryads (to could as daemons) arrived in the mail this morning. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into those.

Thanks. I've been having a play around with one of the dryads, here's a quick WIP:
I've still a ways to go, but the paint scheme is coming together. Any feedback appreciated.
And now for some finished work. The fourth of ten daemonettes:
Basing is still my favourite part of these characters. I've got a few more pictures of this girl in my dakka gallery, if you're interested.
Finally, I've called things done with my test possessed conversion model.
(After he took the photos, my boyfriend pointed out that he's missing the chapter symbol on his shoulder pad. Whoops.)
I'm pretty dang happy with this guy. I've got a box of ten vanilla marines on their way to me, and probably five of them will be getting this treatment. My plan is to give them armour from different loyalist chapters, with the parts of some suits mixed together. I've been working on their fluff a bit more, but I'll save that for a shorter update.
Hope you've enjoyed!

Thanks LoneLictor and Ignatius-Grulgor, I appreciate the nice comments. They're very encouraging
Fairly small update, I had a busy weekend. But I've finally gotten another possessed finished. This guy's name is 'bones'. More pics in my gallery if you're interested.
I also got a dryad finished.
Keen observers will note that this isn't the dryad I posted a WIP of, I ended up pretty unhappy with how that model came out so she didn't really get finished. You might notice that parts of this model aren't as smooth as they could be - I had a problem with parts of my base coat drying very powdery. I don't know if it was my inexperience, or the paint I was using, or what. If anyone has any suggestions to minimise the powdery texture, I'm all ears.
In other news, I finally got my hands on the chaos daemons codex. It's proved very motivational, and a lot of what has been said about Slaanesh has been inspiring. I'm planning to put together an armies on parade board this year, so that will be coming together gradually.
Other than that, I'm (im)patiently waiting for loads more bits to get here and (slowly) reading the Horus Heresy novels.
