So. to demonstrate how easy this technique is to work i have a whole collection of shots of two models that i painted in about 45 minutes each.
So, I roughly timed the process of painting these two models. Overall i think painting a model to completion takes about 45 minutes. The combined effect of Zenithal base coating with the pooling and gradation of ink, coupled with a light dry brush creates a model with nice contrasts that require way less work than just by using contemporary means. Below i describe roughly how i did them. Not that i feel that they are really amazing when compared with some of the work found in galleries here and abroad, but i do feel that for those of you who want to create a fairly fast, simple paint job that looks good for the time invested, then read on.
First i used the zenithal painting technique to base coat the models. I painted them black from top to bottom and then sprayed them with white paint from directly above and then i fired bursts from about 45 degree angels all the way around the top of the models. this paints the whole top of the model white with upward facing areas shaded but not entirely painted white.
I then used red, blue brown and black inks. The jackets are just blue ink. Brown ink for the leather and black ink for the guns. The weird little hoods that they are wearing i painted with red ink. The ink allows the models base coat of white and black to show through. This coupled with the gradation and the way that the ink pools creates additional hightlights. I also used dwarf flesh (to pink for my taste but im gonna tone it down) and bolt gun to pick out the flesh and metal on the model. Doing two models it took about an hour to do the whole model.
Lastly i spent about 15 minutes to dry brush the blue jackets with underhive ash as well as the leather creating additional highlights. I chipped up and corroded the metal by applying irregular blots of chestnut ink and dabs of bolt gun here and there. The red got a wash of Badab black while boltgun got hit with Devlan mud. The flesh will later get some eldar flesh and reikland flesh shade.
These models are by no means finshed but they are mostly done. Questions and comments appreciated.

Been working on my demons lately. This model was always one that I would see and wonder about
I have to say that it is was cooler in person. For all those of you who viewed this and saw nothing, such are the problems trying to figure out how my iphone interfaces with Dakka.
Had to upload these from my computer. This is Carcass, took only a day or so to paint. I am pretty happy this turned out. The remains of the blood angel on the base are a little too bright for my taste, but overall they make the model pop as a whole. It was my first time working with that blue corrosion wash that GW has concoceted. Seems to work pretty well. I used to make my own following instructions on CMON but the GW was seems to work well enough that i dont have to wory about doing that any more.
I have been on a bit of a painting tear recently. I will be updating or trying to update on a more regular basis than i have been. Like i said, this is one of my latest works and i am pretty happy with Carcass.

Thanks Capn Facebeard
I appreciate the props.
Like i said i have been on a bit of a painting spree. No telling where this thing is going to stop. i am finishing up work on Sepsis, another of my Greater Unclean Ones. Sepsis actually took much longer to paint than Carcass, my last daemon prince of Nurgle. I think it mainly had to do with how heavy this model is. The metal GUO weighs about a pound. It must have sucked for GW to move these things over seas. The shipping was likely horrendous. I like the model though. Its a bit outdated but all the maggots and weeping wounds here and there look great. The arm i swapped from the city fight nurgle daemond prince.
The little nurgling on the base was a fun conversion. I'm not sure where i got that head, but it reminds me of a baby or a fat city official who was transformed into a nurgling. sentenced to carry the skull of his wife forever on a chain.
The trail of slime turned out well that is spilling out in the GUO's wake. I did that with just wood glue covered in super glue whilst still wet. It wrinkles up like that and i think it creates a very nurgly effect. Next time i might slip a few BB or something else round in there to look like bubbles but i am happy with the overall effect for now.
Hope you enjoyed this update. more coming soon.

Its been forever since i did a hobby progress update so i figured that i would knock the dust off this thread.
I have been working feverishly to finish all of my backlog of mini's over that last couple of months. I set a goal a while ago to paint and assemble all the minis that i have laying around rather than buy new ones and have those sit in piles so i got a wind in my sails and started at it.
These are three of the projects that i have been working on.
The first of these is my Chaos lord turned spawn model. I started on this forever and a day ago, and finally finished green stuffing him last night. Every CSM army needs one of these for that inevitable time when your lord spawns himself after a successful challenge. Personally this rule seems dumb since winning a challenge for chaos seems like more of something that chaos would reward, but the gods are fickle.
The next shot is what i call the emergency bloodthirster. He was given to me in a sad state. The wings were the old metal nipple claw ones that the model comes with and he was just coated in paint and epoxy. Seriously. If you have a metal model, pin it. Don't just rely on five layers of epoxy and super glue to hold it together. I am in the process of stripping and refitting him. I call it the emergency bloodthirster since i will only likely pull him out to deal with neck beards and other cheese.
The final set of shots are of my hell drake taking form. I assembled it along the lines of many i have seen posted here and in other forums. The notion of a dragon flying around in 40k is just dumb. I never purchased this model for a long time because it was arguably the most broken model in 40k. That was prior to the release of the elder wave cheese. Given that the rules have been dumbed down a bit so they are less cheesy i picked this model up and began the long and not so motivated track to completion. I wanted it to look more like a hell talon so i extended the wings and did lots of nurgly grinding on the model. Most of my other burgle vehicles have extensive green stuffing but the gothic baroque detail makes that a serious pain to do. I decided to forgo it for the most part. '
More to come later. Thanks for checking in and i appreciate any suggestions you make.

Noah, this is a nice goal to have...I should follow suit and build/paint everything I own before buying anything else....unfortunately, GW likes to release stuff that is 'Limited Edition' and 'While Stocks Last.' Then you just end up paying twice as much for it on ebay later...I've been cleaning, building and spray painting backlog Tau models that have been sitting around for far too long, in preparation for our game(s?) this week.
I need to get my website/blog up and running so I can track everything...the hardest part for me is staying focused and motivated on one project for long enough to actually finish it.

Great to see you dave.
My Hobby goal is coming along. I have not been documenting very well but in the interest of just getting some more evidence up here on my thread i have been just taking a few pics with my iPhone. I have been making lots of hobby progress but very little of my work has made it up on here due to really poor lighting from living in a valley that faces away from the sun and is heavily covered with trees. I am going to try to set something up in my garage but for now i am going to just keep up some of these quirky posts.
The first pic is of a Dark Apostle that i have begun to convert out of one of my chosen marines. My Word Bearers are slowly growing and it just does not seem right that i have no dark apostle to preach the word of Lorgar. He is coming along nicely.
Next up is my Emergency Bloodthirster. I stripped the model and removed the weird Nipple Claw Wings. My buddy Magnusthered gave me some plastic daemon wings which i pinned to his back. I repositioned both of the arms so that they are posed a bit more dynamically and then twisted his head to the side. By sculpting the neck after girding off one cheek i feel i was able to give him the feel that he was leaning in to just bash some fool over whom he is towering.
The last model i have been working on is the mangler. A burgle marked Mutilator. I was opposed to using these initially but they work pretty well in certain roles. You can send them in ala Lone Wolf and against certain targets they perform quite well. I have this baby to thank for my last win. He took out about half a squad of grey hunters and then ripped their rhino to bitz handing me the game.
A while back i posted this list of minis n the hopes that i would knock them out before buying any new plastic crack. I have finished the following models marked in red are more or less completed hobby goals.
I have 5 nurgle spawn to be converted.
2 Nurgle sorcerers and one nurgle lord to be painted and partially converted.
50 cultists t o be painted and partially converted.
One defiler to assemble, convert and paint
One defiler to paint.
One soul-grinder to assemble, convert and paint.
about 14 new plague marines to paint
5 havoc with 4 auto cannon to paint and convert
20 plaguebearers to assemble and paint
21 nurgling bases to paint (good lord)
1 demon prince to paint
1 rhino to paint and convert
1 more landraider to paint and convert
Two hell brutes to be assembled, converted and painted
10 Assault marines to paint and convert
13 chosen to paint and convert
All i plan on buying is a single hell drake… and a partridge in a pear tree.
151 models or there a bouts.

Hi all.
Been lost in the warp lately. Lots of work and also side projects. I have been rebasing some Tzeench stuff as well as putting together some Khorne Daemons for a Daemonkin army. Which i might add is a fun army to play. However, this update is of a far larker matter. A good friend (magnus the red) had an extra titan laying around. It was one that he had purchased used. Its a Mars pattern loyalist titan which i am going to convert over to chaos. Its mssing a couple of pieces and is going to require a little work to Nurgle up, but I am looking forward to all the green stuffing it is going to take to make this truly one of Nurgles most blessed creations. I pulled the Nails out and am just starting to consider how i am going to do it up.

Thanks GiraffeX. It will definitely be on of the mos intense conversions that I have attempted. Am going to be doing a lot of re sculpting to add the necessary corrosion etc. It's also missing the Princepts. I have a bit that I can add that will look reasonable when it has enough GS etc. I'm also going to add some computers and other nonsense to the interior so it's not just a empty cabin.
Stay tuned for more modeling nonsense.
No work done today because I played 2 games with my burgle.

Just had one of those fatal moments where I wrote a big ol post and had a computer glitch delete it all. I have been working on a this model for quite some time. About a year at least. I have army ADD so I have been struggling to get this done. I finished work on it today. I did the dremeling and drilling to create pits in the hull of the vehicle. I also glued sand here and there around the tracks to simulate a load of extra corrosion. I wanted this model to stand out from my other rhino so I glued on the trophy racks a while back. I didn't honestly like them till just recently. Also added loads of extra boxes and crates. I wanted it to look like they have been in the field a while.
Hope you like it.

I have been working on doing some conversions to minis that I bought to use specifically as terrain. I picked up a set of 5 ww2 vehicles for 12 bucks that I was using as terrain in some of my games. I figured that since they are pretty nice models that I should just experiment on the. With some new tactics. I started off with a hairspray and salt chipping effect. Just hairspray does not seem to do it very well so I went to using the two together and it seems like it works pretty well. I base coated them a rust red color and then sprayed with Aqua net. Sprinkles with salt and then spraypainted primer grey. A little water and scrubbing later and they looked suitably rusted up. I then washed them with Declan mud and after that dried I went over them and sponge weathered them with some burnt sienna paint. In hit this one with some rust streakers and did the tracks with a mix of real dirt that I mixed with glue, and typhus corrosion.

Quick update. I have just started the heavy part of the conversion. By heavy i mean grinding on Resin. I know its super bad for your to grind on resin so i used a mask to prevent me from inhaling any little bits. I also sat in front of a running fan and had a running vacuum set up to suck up the bits that i was grinding off of the titan as i removed the loyalist symbols. Most came off pretty easily. I ground off anything that resembled a aquila or a flue de le. I just started working on the GS work to update them to a more Nurgly look.Removing the giant eagle from the left leg took the most work. I made three large balls of GS that i am going to cut in half and glue onto the legs as plague censures. Surprisingly working on a larger model is going much faster than working on smaller models has. Automatically Appended Next Post: Finished some free stuff work on the left shin guard. I used a mixture of green stuff and miliput which accounts for the differing appearance of the materials. I am going to do something similar for the right shin guard. Have any of you used any of these small smoke generators. I was thinking about putting one inside the cockpit so that it will "leaked greasy looking fumes.

So i ground off the resin aquila and started adding some green stuff mixed with miliput. I am not a huge fan of milliput by itself but the mix has somewhat better properties for what i am doing here. smoothing it with water is possible and it is a little more creamy and a bit less rubbery to work with. I am planning on coating almost every bit of the armor on this monster with dents and indentations. work is going a lot faster than it does on smaller models. this is the biggest model that i have worked on. I have been thinking about the banners and flags that its going to have on it. I was thinking about stringing together ropes of loyalist helmets and having them dangling between the legs along side a banner dedicated to grandfather burgle. Not sure yet about the base but i did find some 10" birch display bases on line that would make a nice base for it. I have some extra building parts. I was thinking about having him standing in the ruins of a building he has just smashed. something like that. Anywasy. I know that this is slow going but i hope your enjoying it. I plan on being done in a matter of about a month.
Questions and comments are appreciated.

Finished the heldrake. It was a bigger pain in the arse than expected to paint. For now it is good for tabletop play. I still have to fi ish the base. Currently on the workbench I still have the Titan, a landraider, converting up three mutilators and yesterday I made a set of ten plague zombies. Those will be fun too field and will allow me to bring the heretic list from Imperial armor 13. I want to be able to field artillery. Three wyverns would be good or a unit of leman Russ. Not sure which.

Been working on an update. I am trying to do an hour a day so that I can finish this Titan for a Apocalypse game next month. I have a ton to do. This is the head. I finished both of the leg grieves and started in the back plate as well. In the mean time I also have to order a birch display base.. Mostly thinking about a 10" round. I also am going to have to pick up some barbed wire. My vision is to have the Titan dragging barbed wire that is tied up around the ankles of the Titan.
Also recently finished are ten plague zombies. A local shop has an unlimited 1000 pt tournament. I am thinking of running the Titan with 20 plague zombies and a arch demagogue command squad for the HQ. This will necessitate my building the command squad. Either way. If any one has any idea what models I should use for my arch demagogue and command squad, post them up here.

Thank you little tower. I am trying not to get bogged down. With just about two weeks left I am going to be hard pressed to have it table ready for the next apoc game. I work on it one hour per night. I also worked on the rhino pictured above but rather than post pics of it 90% painted I decided to wait until I have the full go.
This is a shot of my second soul grinder of Nurgle. I got some base layers on it and have started to work on the dry bushing. Next up trim and wash, befor I tackle the torso. I am planning a bone white head with brass armor dripping corruption. Questions and comments welcome.

Thank you evil cheese. I am putting in about an hour a night trying to get this thing ready for a apocalypse game this coming December. And also to field in a 1250 tournament the following week. The tournament is a no holds barred winner take all, Swiss elimination tourni. Last week I walked in with what Khorne models I had in my bag and just got liberally thrashed by skitari and blood angles. I was just lucky I didn't have to face the green tide.
So, I have been working to get this done and also to have a centerpiece for my Mortis Apostate army. With green stuff you can only do so much at a time so I do a little on each separate part. Tonight I more or less finished up the face plate and did a bit more work on the pathogen stacks that grow up from the backs of all the models in the army. Being trapped in the warp for 10,000 years with the destroyer plague eating at them has left the Mortis apostate truly blessed with nurgles graces.
I ordered some razor wire for basing it from Army Painter. It looks quite good for the price. I plan on having ropes of it tangled around the Titans feet and slew of posts and mangled bodies in his wake.
Thanks for the props everyone. Questions and comments are appreciated.
BTW. The reason I only post one photo at a time is that for somereason I cannot post more than one to Dakka from my iPad. If anyone has any suggestions to this dilemma I would love to hear. It.

Progress so far. I am really not sure I like the placement of the plague stacks on the front part of the carapace armor. I am thinking that I will have to either cut them off and start over or deal with it. Just looking at this model I have so much to do. I have a ton of gas work to do to suitably muck up all the flat plates of the carapace. I am not comfortable drilling and grinding everything the way I have the ret of my army. Mersin just freaks me out to drill, grind or scrape. I am going to fashio a large banner to hang between his legs and likely I will hang two fairly impressive banners from either of the guns in either side.
Questions and comments appreciated

Looking good so far. In regards to the plague stacks I think you need some smaller ones round the larger ones like how mushrooms grow, they need to blend into the carapace as a living entity they kind just look stuck on at the moment.

Been up to a bit more work. I wish I had textured the head and the leg grieves the same way that I have done the back. I just like the dimpled look. Reminds me a biit of as though the corruption is just slowly making pits in the armor. As I said I have been working on getting it done by December. If anyone knows any good maker of casualtiy models I would appreciate you posting them up here. No have looked into what's available and so far they all seem rather expensive or poorly made.

So, i finally figured out how to link all of my devices so i can hopefully download more than one photo at a time. I think part of my problem is the lack of a newer mac for my iPad to sink too.
Been working on a bunch of projects. This land raider conversion is my second and its almost done. Just wanted to post some shots of the conversions as they progressed. I bought this used off of ebay for 25$. It needed stripping and whomever painted in before me way overdid it with the base layer. Even LA Amazing couldn't strip whatever they used to prime this bugger. They applied it so thick that it wrinked in places. Given that this is to e a Nurgle conversion the extra texture will totally work. I swapped out the normal Heavy bolter armor cover for one i scavenged off of a defiler leg. Fits perfectly. I added Plague censors to the doors, they are on most of my vehicles somewhere. I also added plague stacks which spew pestilential fog as the vehicle advances, sowing disease and death in its wake. Today is a big modeling day. This land raider may get finished, i also have to finish up the titan conversion as well as my Khorne Daemonkin that i have been working on lately.
Any comments or questions are appreciated.
