Magnetize him., So he can have a plasma pistol which you can swap for a grenade launcher. I like the pose so much at the moment that I'm worried the grenade launcher will over balance him/look to heavy in his hand. (unless its the kreig style and then he would need a Bandolier ) Now lets move onto the plasma pistol itself....yet again you're a weaponsmith. What is the riveted metal bracing you've used and where can I buy some?

As for the holster I think it looks good, it would be a shame to remove it. Perhaps you could just stick a gun in the holster so he can keep it.

Model-stuff: Second PDH on the magnetization. Personally, I was about to comment about the slightly downward angle of the arm's "droop" (I'm guessing you sculpted that- really good, your GS-Fu is masterful... and jealousy-inducing... ) but then I read your primer for him, as he's drawing the weapon from the belt holster. Totally makes sense now, and nevermind.

And using the original Delaque body.. +1.

Peter's Edit: Hmm... what happened?

-Remi (HF Iz)

EDIT- momentary lapse in memory- I meant that I believe you sculpted the arm reaching back... not the plasma pistol arm. Unless you did both, then yea... holy...

Thanks, the bracing is just another normal piece of photo etched parts. Originally meant for some tank kit, cost me 22€ but I've already used many pieces, so it was worth it.

Simple idea, but also not a bad one. Would be a shame, so I think I'll follow your advice.

Ah, so this is the guy that you were worried would look 'dull' next to the rest of the gang? Seems pretty unfounded to me! I'll echo everyone else's comments about the sublime pose, beautiful weapon and the awesome GS work, but I thought it was worth a comment on what an excellent basing choice you've made. That downward step, coupled with the slight tilt of the pistol arm and the sense of movement in the reaching arm really gives dynamism to what could have been a really static pose. Conclusion: Ace! (and please please try to keep that when you add the GL!)

Thanks bra'tac.

  • Didn't spend time on the hobby today (except reading Dan Abnett's Legion, best HH book so far), but I used my "weaponsmith" skills nonetheless.

  • I bought some weapon oil after work and when I was at home I cleaned and polished the show pieces in our flat and then went up to the attic.

  • In order to soon be able to set up my gaming table there, I had to do some tidying up. Apart from being my workshop, the attic is also the place where we stash all our excess weapons, which don't fit in the flat.
Since there are enough weapons up there to equip a sizeable force of grey knights (no storm bolters of course), it took me a couple of hours. It's always a bit like going through my bitz box when I do that and I even found some abandoned "conversions", a monk's spade I didn't assemble yet and a unique spear tip I never found a suitable staff for, until today.

  • Long story short, I realized I had finally gathered all the parts necessary to assemble that spear of spears: a staff of white chinese willow, hair from a white horse's mane and of course the forged steel tip itself. Fixing the hair to a spear is always annoying and it took me the rest of the day to get everything perfect. Sounds simpler than it was. Anyway, man with pointy stick equals man with happy face!

  • I know it's not wargaming related (shoot me!), but I thought as Peter keeps calling me a weaponsmith, it was apt to show you I somehow am.

  • Spoiler:

Do you mean you're not familiar with the concept of using P/E parts for models or do you mean you'd like to see what set I was using?

Here is a reference for P/E in general, you can also see examples of parts there.
    http://www.italianhorses.net/tutorials/Photoetch/pe.htm

I forgot the name of the manufacturer of my favorite P/E parts, but there are so many anyway. Tamiya has decent quality, Eduard is cheap but the quality isn't overwhelming. I just by a set when I see a good one, you'll never use all parts and only some are really usefull, but I think it's still worth it. Glueing is a pain in the ass though.

Hey folks, my internet is down at the moment, so it's up to my phone to provide me with some dakka.

I've been painting (that delaque juve) and converting (that companion for my wizard) a little lately.
I didn't get that much done, but what little I did, was quite productive.
The juve isn't done yet, but I'm pretty determined not to spend much more time on it, but to move on soon. It's frustrating me and have to tell myself it's just a practice. So I'll put up some pics soon.

No he doesn't. He is an GW employee, but not that much of an internet person, so the best chance you have seen something from him is on one of the german Games Days. He's normally the guy with the crazy big projects, the most memorable of which are his imperial naval carrier with the twentysomething valkyries in it's belly and his COD-board with the complete network of sewers under the buildings.
I'm a little afraid though that he might bail out. He's pretty busy atm and inspiration hasn't struck him yet.

Its a funny thing , working towards someone eles idea, It took me a while and a lot of research to find that initial spark.
For me i had to place myself in the midst of research and trust that i was going to see something that i liked . But even then its not enough , then i had to really get stuck in with the details of the thing , live the part , only then did i feel connected to the idea. but once thats done , its part of you and feels like my own thing , ownership is the key .

i think i have seen some of his work online , did he do the huge city of death with the tank factory beneath it?

With the release of the wizards close at hand, this blog will get a little less of my attention during the next few weeks, but I'm determined to do some painting while my wizard is still in the conversion phase.
Problem is I'm quite demotivated by my current painting project, that stupid little juve I told you about before. His name is Inermis btw.

Well I decided to present you two PIP pics (taken with my mobile for quickness) to hear a second opinion and hopefully get back on the track.

I'm really not happy with it, but I consider it close to completion, because I'd really like to carry on with something more motivating.
The parts I still consider PIP are:
His shoes and belt including the pouch, his goggles and his skin (which sucks).
The rest could be much better, but I'm pretty much settled with it. The only good part is the gun, which I did first, before loosing spirit.

Sorry for the bad quality, they didn't look that fuzzy before uploading...

Nice to see you painting again, loving the style of him mate , very city of darkness! he looks like a vampire and the blue snake is kinda neon looking , nice splash of colour too.

wont judge his shoes and belt as their still wip , but overall he looks fine to me. acool tatoo on his chest or head would look great though.

A nice recipe for pale skin is to basecoat dheneb stone, wash badab black, then build up from dheneb to skull white. Gives super pale creepy skin.

19 pages in and we're onto the 3rd painted model You know how I like a modelling and painting blog.

The Gun - You say it is the good bit. I'll take your word for it as I cannot really make much out due to the blur. Is it green and rusty right? The blury rust looks good though.

The Coat - I actually really like this a very nice shade of blue. I think it will really work for the whole gang. The neon blue snake stands out well and looks good.

The Trousers - I like the colour. Reminds me of an old GW paint Swamp Brown.

The Skin - Now I know Delaques are meant to be pale but I'm really not so sure of the skin tone you've used. I think it has too much blue and not enough pink. Ifalna painted the FW Raven Guard Captain model and I think the skin tone she used would be better.

    Spoiler:
    you can zoom in

    Ifalna said-
Cheers PDH, he is on the backburner while I finish off Korv now as I have the IW's to work on in the meantime. The skin is about 80/20 astro grey to skull white as a base. The washes used to pull the detail out were all badab and flesh mixes of varying thickness. Highlights were the base colour with more skull white added per layer untill the final extreme highlight was pure skull white. Trick is to water the paint dowb slightly more for each layer, so quite thick for the base up to milky for the final highlight.

Anyway nice to see you painting. I'm hoping you don't lose interest in them once you have finished converting them all. It would be crime if they didn't get painted.

As I said, the skin is troubling me.
My plan was to use the same color for shading in as many places as possible. I don't want the face to pop out to much, he's pale , but he's also dirty, dusty, grimy. So I used the dark sea blue over different base colors to check how it looks and then started hilighting it with the palest flesh tone in the vallejo range.
It looked too blue/white and I decided to apply several very thin layers of diluted model color flesh wash, which gave it a more natural pink touch. I.e. he looked a little like Miss Piggy and I tried to reduce the effect, which is where he is now.

I could use some help with the skin, there are basicly two problems:

  • What skin tone suits the model and the rest of the paintjob?
It needs to be pale, but it shouldn't look like a vampire thing. I was thinking about painting them like they had albinism to explain the paleness and photophobia.
    Some examples:
    Spoiler:

So they range from almost pure white to quite pink, but what wood such skin look like in poor lighting, smoky air and covered in soot and dust?

  • Second question: Whatever you answered to the first question, how would you go about painting it?

the white hair is a must for albinos , shame your guy is bald other wise the minature will just look pale imo, and definately pinkish tones around the eyes ears mouth etc, the dusty thing could be put on afterwards.

I'm going to have to agree that the skin desn't look right and I'd have to agree it looks to grey the stains dominant rather than the stuff being stained. It also doen't help that you seem to have higlighted the stain colour rather than kept it as a highlight on the skin colour if that makes sense.

Another thing with the Delaque and the skin issues - if you're going for pale skin under dark clothing, equipment etc. then clearly the skin is supposed to be the eye-catching bit.

At the moment this is not the case - the snake on the jacket is and this detracts from the skin. That ice blue snake is just...too stark for its own good and draws the attention away from the skin.
