German man accidentally causes explosion with airbed

A German man has been blown across the room and caused hundreds of thousands worth of damage to his home after he accidentally caused an inflatable mattress to explode.

The 41-year-old bought the self-inflatable airbed when he moved to Lower Saxony because he hadn't bought any furniture yet.

He then used an industrial strength tyre sealant to patch up a leak in the broken mattress, Die Welt reported.

But the sealant reacted with heat from the mattress' electric pump, causing a blast that ripped curtains, broke roof tiles, smashed windows and tore doors from their hinges.

The explosion caused about $223,000 worth of damage and the man was taken to hospital with minor cuts and an injured wrist.

I love stories that end like this. Not the damages, but the fact it was a big explosion and all that happened to the guy is a few cuts and a slightly hurt wrist.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I'm curious what tire sealant he purchased that explodes when it gets warm.

I think there is something missing here.

How could an air mattress contain enough energy to do this? And how would the sealant contribute to that.

I'm going to guess its a case of the dumbarse set the pressurized can of chemical sealant on the electric motor that was filling the air mattress, and then some combination of heating that can and the contents being flammable.

I'd say the mattress being larger than a tyre, the man dumped a full can of latex plus propellant in (butane usually). And the propellant reacted with the hot pump.

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

Personal guess? The 'reaction' in question caused the air to expand inside the mattress beyond its capacity? I've seen (and felt) overfilled tires explode, and that can be quite a kick. If the air pressure from the explosion damaged hanging pipes or windows, that could cause quite a bit of damage.

My first thought on the damage figure was that it burst the glass tube in a fire suppression system. If that was the case, then I'm surprised the damage done was so small.

Just my thoughts on it.

There's also the projectile the explosion created.

He jumps on the bed, it explodes, he flies through the house like an intercontinental ballistic bratwurst.

Something like this I would imagine:-

This comment alone has now convinced me that getting up this morning was actually worthwhile

I suppose if he was unluck he could have taken out a retaining wall or something, requiring serious structural work...

There's a chance that the sealant wasn't dried, so the fumes it gave off as it cured went inside the mattress.

Flammable fumes + air mixture + pressurised container = bomb.

I can see a container the size of a mattress filled with flammable gas exploding and causing that much damage.

This will be exactly what happened. The sealant would've been giving of fume, reacted with the heat from the pump and went kaplooey.
