Hey, guys, I have found a game that shows you how it feels to be an Imperial Guardsman!
It's COD:WaW on insane mode!
I'm not talking about things like the DoW series, this thread is about video games / movies / tv shows that made you say "Wow. So this is what 40k is like."
I go with WaW insane mode because of the sheer amount of death in there. When you're fighting in the Reichstag as the russians, there is a part where if I turn a corner I get insta-killed, with no way of surviving. And that's how I picture the IG.

Gears kind of feels like 40k.
Very gritty, and things popping out of the walls.

Obviously, but you know, nothing quite plays like this game where you just wade through orks and they keep coming about as fast as you're replacing them...and then the bloodletters blinking around it was fantastic.
I've never had this overwhelmed but totally in control feeling from any other game.
Except maybe in the first Borderlands game where at times there are an absurd amount of Spiderants.

StarCraft was basically Blizzard making a 40k RTS without actually making a 40k RTS, so I'm guessing it's probably got a similar feel to it (never actually played it, so I don't know for sure. I agree with what other people have said about Space Marine, I felt like an Astartes while playing that game.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Planetside 2 during the largest of battles where my clan were outnumbered by the masses of VS and TR and we fought on and won even though we were outnumbered 5 or more to 1.
ITs part IMperial Guard, part Space Marines. The clan even adopted a few 40k bits during the early parts of Planetside 2. You used to be able to deploy on a base enmass (via a 1 man drop pod) I used to always say "CODEX ASTERTES CALLS THIS MANUVERE STEEL RAIN" into team speak. The clan leader and everyone else adopted this and actually called the mass deployment "Steel Rain" which made it all the better as we were the elite of the elite of the NC on our server (I think). and when we droped in enmass everyone knew it was game over if they were Vanu or Terran.
That and I would /yell into game chat "WE ARE SPACE MARINES!" (It would be spoken like Boreal in TS) and it usually got a good reaction. The rest of the guys in my clan got into it and would reply "WE ARE THE EMPERORS FURY!!".
It was a blast.... now if only they would release Hossin! then I would go back to Auraxis...

Halo never felt cartoonish to me...but it does feel a bit "light" like Mass Effect.
There's no real grit or heaviness to it.
When I picture 40k it involves walking through walls and destruction.
BF4 has a more 40k than Hao for me...and I am not saying BF4 or CoD feel anything like it either.

Mm. Very few things capture the kind of horror that 40k should inspire. Or the scale of destruction (I don't know much about ME).
However, the WW1/WW2 parts of COD are good for feeling like an IG, GoW is good for feeling like you have a bolter and are killing alien gribblies, WH40k: Space Marine is an awesome display of genocidal violence...

Space Marine also captured the essence of most weapons fairly well too.
Barring the Melta Gun and Lascannon.
Plasma and bolt weapons in that game are exceptionally well done.
As were the differences in CC weapons.
I was most thoroughly pleased with
Bolter
Stormbolter
Plasma Pistol
Autocannon

Mass Effect does give you the sense of puny humans standing up against unimaginably powerful horrors from beyond space and time with just guts and guns, though the racially integrated setting doesn't help the parallel and they really ought to have done more with indoctrination (mind control that happens just by hanging around a bit of unshielded tech made by the bad guys). 2 and 3 do this much better, the first game was a formulaic romp through a shiny science fiction setting where the good guys are all good guys and almost always agree and where all the technology looks like it was designed by Apple, and the cosmic horrors didn't show up until the very end.
Dragon Age is actually a fair parallel if you get past the fantasy trappings; it's set in a very feudal society full of corruption and suspicion where the 'magic' is extremely destructive, corrupting, and has a tendency to lead to incursions by horrors from the Other Side. There's also the aspect of how the writers aren't afraid to point out exactly how screwed up their setting is, write depressingly tragic stories, and kill off beloved major characters when the player screws up.
Another thing that possibly belongs here is Mask of the Betrayer (the first expansion campaign for NWN2), it's not grim and depressing to the same degree as Warhammer (few things are) but it is the story of a man (or woman) granted unimaginable power at the cost of his (or her) soul fighting to control/suppress the instincts of a possessing influence before it destroys him (or her) utterly and battling against some of the fundamental forces of the universe along the way (the big difference between MotB and Warhammer is that you can actually beat them in MotB).
Of course these are all story rather than gameplay; gameplay-wise I've never played anything besides ME3 and Space Marine that quite captures the degree of awesome power in the weapons and tools of the Warhammer universe. In point of fact ME3 is one of the only games I've ever played where the small arms get more over the top than in Warhammer; stacking penetration mods on the Javelin to produce something that handles like a lascannon, can be fired by a normal human, and can kill an armoured man with a headshot through three and a half meters of solid steel as well as providing super-x-ray-vision to do so with pinpoint accuracy is not something you come across in just any game.

You would be correct in this assessment. My roommate tells me that Borderlands is another game with over-the-top guns in this vein.

Borderlands Guns exist as a result of "wouldn't it be awesome if"
Wouldn't it be awesome if:
Shotguns shot Rockets
SMGs shot 8 bullets per one shot fired.
Rocket Launchers could shoot a giant corrosive shell
Assaut Rifles could have electro ammo
It's all about elemental effects and the type of enemy you're facing.
Explosive hurts everything
Shock kills enemy shields
Fire kills fleshy things
Corrosion kills armoured things
Slag makes normal bullets do more damage (Slag = Rad Grenades)

Every time I see Nate Drake in any of the Uncharted games (but especially the second game in Nepal) fall several stores and smash against a wall on the way down and then get up with no sign of weakness or broken bones, I say to myself "This guy is a fething precursor to a space marine!"

CoD waw does play like I'd imagine a guard campaign would, but that's unsurprising, as you're a human fighting other humans while your friends and comrades die around you...
Fallout 3 has some occasional similarities - you can get power armour, and fight big green monsters (super-mutants always remind me a little of Orks) or play "guardsman style" with a laser rifle and combat armour.

Section 8 and Section 8: Prejudice. The armored infantry pretty much Astartes, if not actually better considering they have a beefy amount of health, run around sixty miles per hour, and deploy by dropping out of space ships in low orbit without anything besides their power armor.
And then of course, there's always DOOM.

XCOM has something of the Inquisitorial Stormtrooper about it, especially on classic difficulty. Thrill as your squad swoops in to save humanity from the alien hordes! Cheer as you spew hot death at the xeno! Shriek in terror as you miss completely and the guy next to you catches half a dozen plasma bolts with his face!
