So I don't know about your meta but must of my local gaming stores share space with or at least houses Magic tournaments and players in a nearby room.

What do you think of them in particular?

Personally, I find that crowd to be a bit displeasing (EDIT: They're a bit rambunctious and rowdy, if not rude, in my local gaming store) but I sense that their general presence and tremendous cash output is what allows 40k to exist at many stores.

So I am a bit conflicted.

And you?

Voted indifferent - I play magic casually, but usually only do booster drafts at a friend's house (so I don' take up gaming space nor play ultra competitive MTG).

Wow, tarring with the same brush much?

They're just like you. They're geeks, they're nerds, they're mostly men, they've got more disposable income than a small country. Why do you feel they don't 'deserve' to share the game stores with you?

Personally, the old game store I use to play at had a lot of magic players. They ended up driving most other players out of the store and were not friendly to new magic players or even the 40k community.

Though the new store I play at has very friendly magic players.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

*shrug* Several of my friends play it occasionally as a side hobby to our main stuff with 40K/vid games and I've played it a few times with other people's decks. Doesn't seem to be a thing where you associate someone with a group of people for simply playing a certain card game.

I would base my opinion on how people act and what their personalities are like, and even then with a certain grain of salt with that opinion since normally I'm not privy to what they're like outside of my limited context. Not generalize them upon what card or other types of games they play.

i play both ... i have some decks that have close to 1,500$ invested in them ...

that being said ... i have seen noise and roudy behavior from each side in our area... it is just that the people who play the same game do not notice it much ... but to someone who does not play it ... it can stick out as a sore thumb ... and be looked upon as a waste of space. As a 'oh they only allow them here because they can make money off of them' ... etc etc etc ... welcome to hobbies ...

I found that it is crazy how often you can replace Magic card terminology with heroin terminology and have the exact same conversation about a Magic player as you would a smack addict.

That being said, I play at a FLGS, and I'm smart enough to realize that the CCG players are the ones who spend the lion's share of the income that comes into the store. So they're kind of like a mixed blessing. Something you can't live without, but kind of wish you could. I grew up in a college town, so it isn't a sensation I'm exactly unfamiliar with.

Personally, I've got off the cardboard heroin, and I've been living junk-clean for almost ten years now. (Although like any addiction, it's an ever-present temptation. Especially with this EDH business I've been hearing about...)

I don't mind them.

We both go to the flgs to relax unwind and have fun, I don't begrudge them for their fun as long as they don't begrudge me for mine.

Also as has been noted MTG goes a long way towards keeping flgs's financially solvent.

I'm indifferent, as the stores in my area tend to gravitate towards one or the other. I think I'm fine with that. As a former Magic player, I find the neckbeards in wargaming slightly more tolerable when encountered in the wild.

I played both, and flip flop between the two. When I went to school in Boston I never had any friends who played 40k or wanted to, so I left my models at home. They did, however, play MtG, so I dusted off my old cards and bought a butt-ton of new ones (definitely too many) and had a good ol' time with them. However, when I returned to CA an was with my 40k friends, I hardly ever played MtG.

Also, I play at a GW so there is no MtG there. When I was in Boston doing MtG there was a very small crowd of 40k people, but the main draw of the store was MtG. There were usually around 50-100 people there every night playing in Central Square.

You are right about one thing - magic is a cash cow.

A few buddies of mine owned a store - they lost money on most wargaming - but made it up in magic.

Honestly, its the most amazing and brilliant marketing scheme in history - I used to play magic (I got out - it was like an arms race where to a degree cash was more important than skill).
The idea that sets of cards expire - absolute brilliance - its a bigger scam than my new connector on my ipad (to get people to buy new cables and peripherals) .

The stunning part is the players accepted it.

Of course, many 40k players fall into the same trap - new codexes obsolete old ones, and in stead of keeping the old one current and competitive (exceptionally easy to do if they wanted to) they get us to buy new ones if we want to keep up.
(well, not all of us, I played tau all through 5th).

Anyway....rambling on ...I have no problem with magic players, I just laugh at them when they say "magic is cheaper than 40k....".
They don't even come close....

I am indifferent as at my local store we have specific nights of the week that are for different tabletop games or Magic. Typically if you want to organize a game with someone you do so for the night dedicated to the game you will be playing, barring that there is usually enough room for everything to play. The only exception to this is FNM, WAY too many people show up for that to be able to get a tabletop wargame going at the same time.

Also because this made me laugh to no end.

So long as the cardboard maintains its secondary market value, it's not a foolish investment. You won't find any power nine owners wailing. Their Vintage decks are worth more than your 40k army and probably some people's cars. Not to mention our collective wail when we've spent thousands on little lumps of plastic.

I play M:tG, YGO, and 40K competitively and the YGO crowd is by far the worst so it's funny seeing 40K and M:tG fanbases at odds with each other.

I played many different CCGs since I was in high school, quit them all and started warhammer about four years ago. When my friends and I started 40k, so did a lot of other people.

That being said, as a former CCG player, most players are like war gamers. You'll have you quiet ones, rowdy ones, nice ones. Honestly it depends on if they are regulars at your store or not. I've noticed that non regulars tend to be disrespectful and feel that they are better than war gamers. Picking up models, sometimes mid game, or demanding we "make space" for them so they can play. As for our regular crowd they're pretty relaxed about war gamers. Many of them play magic and 40k, have friends that play, or have started to take an interest.

As someone pointed out the scam that is magic, many of our magic players have started to either cash out of magic or play magic and 40k because of the cost of keeping up with the game.

My experience has been limited to one gaming store, so I'm sure this doesn't apply everywhere: the YuGiOh players at that store sucked holy hell and were the scum of the store. They stole, never bought anything (brought their own drinks), didn't bathe, and acted like they owned every table. YGO players in that store, from my experience (again, only that ONE store!!), are disgusting piles of crap that shouldn't have ever left their parents' basement.

Casual Magic players are usually pretty chill, and competitive Magic players are like anyone else: some are great guys, some suck as bad as YGO kids. I used to be a casual Magic player and couldn't understand how people spent so much on it-I traded for most of my stuff or bought bulk lots. That said, Magic tournaments at the store I USED to work/play at stunk like an unwashed jock strap. The players didn't know how to bathe. Never had that issue with Warhammer players.

Also, why the heck is this in the 40k thread? I mean, it's about Magic...from a 40k player's POV. It's not a 40k thread. Maybe...MAYBE general discussion. Or the board/card game thread. Idk. Not here though.

OK

Whenever I walk into a game store and see a large group of magic going on, I have to mentally prep myself to endure hours of endless olfactory torment.

The pokemon tournaments are the creepiest though. 50+ year old dudes up against 8 year olds, it's just too weird.

Hmm, I'd say indifferent although the only pretty woman I have ever seen in the game store played Magic. I mean, wow pretty.

Anywho it's generally their business that pays for you to play so enjoy them. If I open a store on my own (An ambition of mine) I will look to Magic to make the store shine but will do my best to cater to GW stuff.

I don't mind them.
1. I used to play but was never hardcore, still have an old illegal deck or two about.
2. They help keep hobby shops I business
3.usually the shops keep us separated by having events on different days.
4. Ive seen some SMELLY ones but I have also see smelly D&D players and warhammer players. we all have our bad apples.
