yea.
I have found the Battle Standard to be pretty awesome. Great shop.
I miss the old "Dragons Lair" that was in West Hartford.

I just remembered something that happened about 3 years ago now. While going on a date to the movies, the girl I was with asked if I minded if she could quickly buy something for her little brother. I didn't mind at all but she refused to tell me where she wanted to go because, in her words, "it is far too embarrassing to mention." I didn't think any more about it until we rounded the corner to where the local GW store was.
I asked her if that was where we were going, she went bright red and admitted that I was correct. She apologised for making me go somewhere that was so nerdy and uncool. I walked in and greeted every single staff member by first name and asked how their week had been. I swear she almost died of shock by this and made her purchases as quickly as possible. Needless to say that relationship did not last very long and I didn't get anything on that date.
Just goes with the stigma of GW that everyone who plays it is a seriously uncool nerd and would never know what to do with a woman. Load of Bull

I just read ALL 20 pages... this thread made my day. Thanks guy/gals!
I despise GW for what they are. Their staff are trained to respresent the 'entire' gaming world to children and newbies as being 99.9% GW... fair enough, they have a profit motive. But outright lies and forced sale of products upon these people generates negative images of the hobby as a whole.
I went into a GW to meet a friend I had not seen in a long time. From the moment I stepped in the door with my Battlefoam PACK, the manager was demanding to know what was inside and when I told him it was Warmachine he almost tried to position himself between myself going any further into the store. Then when my friend came over to greet me he took the same attitude to my mate, who is a regular GW fanboi.
Needless to say, the remainder of the afternoon I was chatting to my friend while he painted his minis (bought at full RRP* in the same store) and the manager tried to sell me crap from the shelves, as I had admitted that I had sold most of my armies because GW didnt do it for me anymore.
*AUS RRP is DOUBLE what you lucky basterds in the USA and Europe pay... at the very least.

Wouldn't be surprised if this was a Brisbane GW. The one near me no longer stocks Witch Hunters, Daemonhunters and several fantasy armies (even blisters) because they have run out of shelf space. Honestly guys, get some more shelf space.

Buying from the UK gets you a 40% discount, when you buy from independent retailers its 45% off. Trust me, I've run the numbers.

It was Sydney Battle Bunker... Its funny hwo the enjoyable GW stores all closed down and the crap remains. Unfortunately, while the cream may rise to the top, the scum settles on top of it also.
I have never been into a GW store in Brisvegas... just couldnt locate any conveniently enough while in Brissy. But we are finally getting one in Cairns next month... I cant wait to go by and use their paints!

Yeh, 54% AUS RRP if you buy from Maelstrom... (sorry wasnt sure if I was allowed to drop the M-Bomb here)... Maelstrom is officially an expletive on Wargamer AU... because the sponsors run that site, not the users.

I was in my local GW the other day and basically had a dude his in my ear 'buy it' about a £50 VC battle force... lets see £50 for 4 core units only 1 of which is decent and I'd need to spent at last another £117.50 on minis and an army book....

As has been said, why are you buying locally?
There are so many Aussies at this site and none of us buy retail in this country. We buy from overseas, where the savings are extreme (even buying direct from GWUS and especially GWUK will net you a decent saving).

Hmm, worst experience = two teens whose dad uses the GW as day care and who never wear deodorant, at all, or possibly even shower.
To all of you gamers out there who practice poor odor-elimination hygiene ... you are horrible human beings. You might as well go around farting in peoples' faces, if you think it's ok. If you can't help it b/c you're allergic to every deodorizer known to man, and water, and shower soap ... carry a sign and apologize to people. If you practice long days of gaming and tournaments, carry a stick of backup d/o in your gaming tub.

For some reason, I've never encountered the problem of smelly gamers.
Don't you spend most of the time 4 feet (at a minimum) away from them, across a gaming table of some sort? (Even if they're not playing you, depending on the layout of the store, of course)

Indeed, that has stuck me as being a bit daft since the contents were confirmed, I'm sure it's possible to get a legal army out of that lot but you'd have to drop the Lord on the Griffon as he isn't legal for quite some time and you're limited to 4x the points cost of the Seaguard regiment as your total. I completely understand why GW felt they needed to include a wizard and regular character for each army though, both types are need to introduce new players effectively and the Griffon Lord makes an excellent centre piece for the set. If I remember correctly the set does come with it's own special scenario so I guess they can call it a one off exemption to the rules but that would just confuse new players. I won't complain about the set as a whole though as I got the Skaven half and the mini rule book for £30 yesterday and given the number of models in the Skaven army that is a real bargain IMO.

Wow, I have loved all 20 pages of this today!
Has made my day in work far brighter reading some of these amazing stories!
Thought I would share my worst two, although they are not about the staff but the clients, who by and far are a WHOLE lot worse than the guys behind the counter!!
1) Went into the LGS in cardiff one day while out with my GF, went to buy some new Black Templar bits and some Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts army books!
So while im over one end of the store looking through some stuff, my GF is reading the backs of boxes etc. just killing time while I nerd out over Ushbati *nerd-gasm* and I hear her scream, swear and the unmistakeable sound of someone hitting the floor.
I turn to see my GF red and flustered and some Chewbacca looking fool on the floor, after we left and she calmed down she told me what happened, now she is erm..rather..Large in the chest?...And she will always get stared at etc. but we cope!
So as it turns out she was stood looking at somethings and the chewbacca guy came up behind her, put his hands under her top and essentially groped her!..She spun round and smacked him knocking him unconscious! >.<
(on reflection...This would be her story not mine...Although it took all her convincing for me not to go back there and stamp on his stomach till he gaks Green Stuff!!)
2)I was at a tournament at my NEW FLGS and I severly tabled my Nid playing opponent with my 3k of Black templars he got a bit annoyed, started shouting about how are smoke launchers are cheating and the vows shouldn't be allowed etc. I offered to shake his hand and just tried to be the bigger man, he told me to Feth off, so I went and stood with some friends and talked for a while since I was waiting for one of them to finish!
I was stood infront of this big glass display full of all the pro-paintined miniatures from the various commissions the shop owner commissioned, and this kid wanting to get revenge tried to shove me into it. Although i hadn't seen him come up to push me, a friend did and yanked me out of the way, the kid stumbled and crashed into it broke EVERYTHING and destroyed every single model! Needless to say he was banned and made to pay the considerable price for breaking them all (Parents were NOT happy!!)

She didn't know!..She only enjoys the painting and only then at home with me with some music on in the background and stuff, she NEVER accompanies me to Gaming stores or tournies now, she is literally terrified of it happeneing again!
Which is a bit upsetting cause she was my best cheerleader!
But yeah, it was just some random who put his hands up her top and grabbed her!...If i had found out who he was, i'd be in prison for GBH im sure! =D hahaha

To be honest, after she knocked the guy out cold (!!) she just wanted to get out of there, seeing as she was upset as she was I agreed!...It was only about 30 or so minutes later she let me knew what happened!

Although I feel a little weird admitting this, I was SO proud of her for reacting like that and not just standing there and taking it.

Damn... I just got on this to see what kinds of other experiences people had. I haven't really had a bad experience at the local stores at all, except for all the models I want being "direct only" and the redshirts being decent at painting and not *really* knowing how the models were done in the reference pics of a certain 40K codex. Not really a big thing, just nit-picking.
But that effin' sucks, Helbrecht. I'm with you on that one. If anyone had the nerve to grope my wife, that d-bag would be spitting his bloody Chiclets all over the floor.. and then I'd definitely be in jail. Good on her for reacting, though!

Kudos to your gf, Helbrecht. It's unfortunate things like that that have probably turned my wife away from the world of gaming in general. A pity really, since I thought she would've enjoyed it at a point, but horror stories like your's are what makes the whole stigma of being a "gamer" something unapproachable, at least for her.
And Kudos to you for being the better guy in your game against the Douchebag you beat. I would've done the same, although I don't think any of my friends would've been keen enough to pull me aside from his ignorant attack. Would've loved to see the look on his face after he went face first into the display.

It was in another store, not a GW.
The people in their normally behave, the place shut down a year or so after that!
I can't even remeber what the place was called, i just remeber it having some awful lime green carpets, massive tomb king section and no windows!

The people in their normally behave, the place shut down a year or so after that!
I can't even remeber what the place was called, i just remeber it having some awful lime green carpets, massive tomb king section and no windows!
I'm not familiar with it then. I know of GW, and Cardiff Games, formerly the Trading Post which is in the arcade near Forbidden Planet. There's also Antics which is opposite GW but they don't do GW. The only other I can think of is Encounter Games which closed a looooooong time ago.
