I was at my local GW Philly (back when it was in Franklin Mills) and my gf was with, as we share a car. She buys me a Land Raider, Drop pod, and some paint for my birthday, then sits in the corner and quietly reads a book while I start to get my Apoc on. Not 5 minutes after she dropped almost $100, I hear the redshirt kicking my girl out because she wasnt doing anything "related to the hobby". I almost swung at him. Haven't been back since, looking for a closer FLGS

My worst experience? Hmmmm, probably when I stopped in at the GW Potomac Mills to pick up a special order. A brand new employee that I had had some rather over-the-top discussions (yes, that means hellacious arguments) with before he was hired walks over to me (after I paid, of course) and told me I had been banned from the store due to my attitude last time I was there (months previous, and coinciding with one of those discussions). He even went so far as to say that the regional manbager was the one who banned me.
So, I just walked out, pulled out my cell phone, called the regional manager (yes, his number was in my phone) and asked him WTF?! He said it wasn't true, so yeah, I made another trip later on and both the manager and employee were quite apologetic.
Now to give that same store kudos. When the store closed, I dropped by on the last day, figured I'd 'recruit' for our local club at the FLGS right across the street. And lo and behold, the manager had posted a flyer about the FLGS.

I've never had a truely bad experience at a hobby store. I did once show up at a GW store for a "make and take" event, only to find that it meant buy something there, paint it, wait all day to be judged. It seemed to me that "make and take" had been formerly the term for showup, build something from a pile of bits in a limited amount of time, and we'll judge it right there, but I guess times must be tough for GW.

Still that's only a minor annoyance.

MajorTom11 wrote:MyAm I a closeted nerd hypocrite? Maybe. In my old age I have become more tolerant of that kind of thing, but hey, I always think that this hobby could actually be kind of cool or at least 'normal' if it wasnt for a few prize specimens like the screaming fat oreo kid ruining it for the rest of us who wanted otherwise normal lives lol.

I very much relate to this. My wife hates 40k, and her main objection is that having seen the crowd at the Chicago Battle Bunker, she doesn't like to think of me as being "one of those". Intellectually, she will admit that it's the oddities that attract the attention and most of the customers (and most of the people I game with) are regular folk, but I can't deny that our hobby does tend to attract a disproprtionate number of folks who are undeniably "different".

Wow, lots of flak at Potomac Mills. Although I must admit my one bad experince was there also. Sam Ross practially chased me out trying to up sell me while I was just running in real quick to see what was going on while the family cruised the mall. That store was moved to Fair Oaks Mall, although Don(the manager) has taken a job in Memphis, Sean is the manager of the Sugerland store, and Sam has left the company. It's just Dav running the store in Fair Oaks(although I'm not sure if he was there during the days the store was in Potomac).

The store in Springfield Plaza, VA is awesome though. Great community and excellent staff.

two things not too bad I think.

A friend of mine a huge ork player was playing a game on a different table at 'ard boyz and when he calls his Waagh, he calls it for real. My opponent who was all of about 14, must been frightened so bad that when he was rolling his ld test the two big apoc dice flew across the board knockin a shield drone about 5 foot away, and the other knocking my coffee off the table as well, it was almost empty.

Same ork player, this past friday. I took my small daemon army out for the first time. And while the 9th/10th painted unit of bloodletters were slaughtering the weak down the right flank. My teammate the ork player's gut smacked Skulltaker to the floor, breaking into 5 parts(magnets included) Guilt trip is ongoing.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car

My worst experience was also my last (of 3 visits total). I went in to pick up Snikrot and the new Nobz, since they were very cool kits and all. I see some people painting by the table, and wander by to see if I can learn any new techniques or ideas (although I saw nothing I could not surpass, even at that point). I end up talking about my orkz, and how I planned to make a fairly limited force of 100 orkz (I stopped at 35...). Immediatly, one of the people at the table with thick-rimmed glasses held together with masking tape, unkempt hair, a dirty shirt, and a voice that only the most stereotypical of nerd archetypes could pull off, turns to me, and scoffs "ONLY 100? THAT'S NOTHING?" as he begins to laugh at my supposed ineptitude.

Now, I wasn't so much offended by his actions. There are dicks abound the entire planet. What strikes me is that he, and his small group of friends painting at the gamesworkshop table (worth noting that this was a tuesday that I had off from school, a working day, and these people were well into their twenties) were pretty much the exact kind of people that epitomized everything I hate about hobbies: The complete obssession with them. Wanting to dissassociate myself with those kind of people as much as possible (and it doesn't just include nerdy hobbies either, any small facet of life that people take up as their identity annoys me), I decided never to return to that place again, rather choosing the greener pastures of the hobbyshop downtown.

When I occasionally visit the GW in Milton Keynes, which is usually at weekends, they have vast numbers of 10-13 year olds that have been dumped there while their parents go out shopping.

I am only 16, and even so I am usually almost the oldest there other than the staff.

I mainly just stand around and chat with Neil, who transferred to Milton Keynes from my local GW (Bedford), this is because I dare not venture near the back of the store, not only because I will be crushed to death due to the lack of space, but because of the "Participation Games".

I have mentioned that the store is mainly populated by 10-14 year olds, they scream, but they are actively encouraged to shout in these participation games by one of the staff members, who tells them to shout "Waaagh!!!" and "Boooom!!" whenever the kiddies shoot, he then tells them to do it louder, akin to a stage performer.

That is why I do not like GW Milton Keynes particularly, because I will lose my hearing there, one of these days.

Disgusting bathrooms. Why do so many store owners never clean very well?

How come so many gamers have such poor bathroom etiquette.

The FLGS that is about 10 minutes down the road has this problem but only two days a week. On Friday and Saturday when we have FNM and the Yu-Gi-OH! tournaments the kids that play (youngest being maybe 10) have horrendous bathroom etiquette. The store always has a clean bathroom though before then, they clean it every night before closing. Ohh and one of the Yu-Ggi-Oh! judges likes the idea of bringing in his children (7, 5 and 3) to go to the bathroom before or after their dance class and the girls piss all over the floor.

I've usually had nothing but good experiences in game stores. The worst I'd ever run into was some guy who hadn't showered in a few too many days. This past week was awful though.

My buddies and I were playing our 40k game, when halfway through about 8 people came in. They were there to play the Naruto CCG. They unplugged the store owner's iPod to plug in their own mp3 player, which was full of pop-punk and really bad J-rock. A few of them had headphones on too, which were loud enough to be heard from across the room. On top of this, all of them were whooping and hollering and making as much noise as humanly possible. Naturally, they were sharing the gaming area with us, which is about as big as the average airplane bathroom. It was pretty hard to maintain composure after an hour of that.

Waaagh isn't so bad when it's done right. At least the first time. At Adepticon there was a nasally perfect stereotype nerd who tried it every time, and every time I came out sounding like something from Alvin and the Chipmunks. It demeans us all as gamers.

At my LFGS every beginner battle one of the guys used to make each side shout Waaagh to figure out who would go first.

Then we had a guy who sounded like he was commenting on horse racing when the Waaagh guy left to be a manager, now he's left and all we have is an amazing painter, another guy and the manager to my knowledge.... O_o

worst expienrence.... FLGS runs a good mix of anything game related. including yugio...or whatever it is. was playing a game with a buddy, a rule question came up so we had to locate one of our rulebooks, wich we had both forgotten in our cases (located in other room) we both went to grab em, when we returned the yugio kids had removed all our models, dumped them onto a side table and had begun playing a game of thier cards or whatever. when we confronted them they reacted like a 5 year old kid who had his candy taken away. it wasent worth the headache and inevitable face punching so we just collected and left to grab lunch. to this day the yugio kids are not allowed in that area, and whfb/409k gamers are advised not to show up on yugio day. its sorta like a science vrs religion restraining order thing.

Wife went to local GW to pick up a gift for me. I made sure to give a list of things I needed. She was confronted by a rather pushy redshirt who told her I didn't really need what was on my list, but rather several alternatives (which were all more expensive of course). In the end I got some stuff I didn't really want and my wife won't step foot in the store again.

Thanks to the operater of my FLGS (not a GW store actaully) My wife now goes with me when i do friday night game nights.

She stopped by to drop me off some dinner on her way home from dinner with the parents. I was playing warhammer with someone just finishing up the game (think we had 2 turns left).

She was about to leave and he was like we are breaking out some board games (which we do after warhammer time) and asked her to join us. She gave it a shot and loved it. So now she goes with me, i play a game of warhammer or two and she watches (and rolls the dice, she likes doing that till she miscasts or something lol). She rolls , goes "is that good" then either cheers or pouts.

Then we have board game time, which is really why she comes.

Luckily most of us are already married and there isnt the inherent OMG A GIRL danger of going into this shop.

My worst. Had to be this time I went to Kamloops a town like 6 hours from me to see my mom. I travel light so I figured I could bring my 40k army.

Anyways I had a game with a very nice fellow and his Tau. I fired a Demolisher shell at a squadron of tau speeder bikes. And when we were discussing how it would damage them. Some asshat grabed the model and said.

"ITS DEAD!!! AND THE OTHERS ARE PENETRATED" I then smacked his hand and told him to piss off.

Got me kicked out, but then me and the guy i played hung out at the Mcdonalds at the other side of the street.

OT, but I find it ironic your icon is wearing a gas mask while you discuss bathrooms.
