OK, got it. Misunderstood. Do you have a list of what is *completely* painted to the standards you want it?

No I do not, mostly because outside of a couple of the dreadnoughts, all of the guys that are at the standard I want I have sent to other people via the marine swap. Even the a fore mention dreadnoughts could use a little more love. I think we should attack this assuming that there isn't a marine in my army up to the standards that I want or am capable of doing.

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

Next question, aside from the two dreads, are there any other figures you can get up to snuff with just a little bit of work?

Then that's where I would start. Do the dreads first 'cause they'r whiz-bang and impressive. Then move on to the rest. Finish squads if you can, then single figures. Then at least you'll have some that are "complete" & can build on that.

I feel like this is becoming the "Gitsplittas 10 Step Army Upgrade Process", but I took your advise and started with a unit that didn't need to much work. It wasn't one of my dreadnoughts but a unit of terminators. I did a bit of touch ups, drilled out some barrels that I had missed, then worked on their bases some.

Believe me Ice... I have so bloody much to paint that I've gotten pretty good at coming up with schemes to trick myself into staying motivated.

The termies look great. And you may have it figured out. Start by cleaning up what you have close, so you don't have that nagging "nothing I've got is really finished" thing going on in the back of your head. Also, do them in fieldable chunks if you can. Finish whole squads as opposed to a figure here or there. Use vehicles (like the dreads) to break up the monotony of the infantry. Lastly, have a specific army build in mind and try to work towards that first. Once that's done, you can add elements to it while still feeling like you've got something concrete completed.

My Adepticon army was my first "leg". My second leg will be complete when I finally get my two LS Storms done and the last couple of sternguard. Then I can just add bits (like the attack bikes, then vindies, etc.) as I feel like it with no pressure.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

I think your on a good track now with Gits pointers. One thing I use to help keep me going is an excel sheet I made that I can track my models painted, broken down by unit type and wargear. It also totals up my total points painted and total models painted. It really gives me a sense of movement in your army. I'd be happy to send you the file if you want. I think Gits uses it as well.

I'd also throw away the old Lemartes model and pick up the new one. Like a billion times better than the old one.

After the terminators I started to do some minor things to the Uttuakki, drilling out barrels! I also finally got around to basing all of my orks. Here is a pic of some of them with their lovely snow bases.

After the Uttuakki I think I am going to make up some 10 man assault squads and start working on updating them. They shouldn't need a lot of work but enough to keep me busy for awhile.

Here is also a couple pictures of my next targets. Here are all of my assault marines with jump packs. I have three full 10 man units and 15 other marines that have either special weapons or sergeant type weapons, I may make some of them into honor guard. I have a lot of work ahead of me with some of these guys but considering I use them fairly often it will be well worth it.

Unless you field a jump honor gaurd I wouldnt think they should be a priority at this time. Definatly complete your basic jump guys they are so close so they might as well be done.

Did you get your mail yet?

What I do is give my self a project to work with, currently I'm working on a 900 points World Eaters force for a doubles tournament in November.

I work out my list of what to include and then divide that list over how many months there are to the event.

I always work on 4 troop models and then something different like a character or vehicle and then another 4 troopers.

I'm a slow painter and find that doing it this way keeps my interest and gives me a goal to aim for by the end of each month.

As an old school GW player I've had the you cant play unless its painted rule driven into my head and stick by it no matter what.

Hope this helps in some way.

@bigfish - Thanks! I thought so too.

@GiraffeX - not a bad suggestion. I may try that. I plopped down all of my jump pack troops and it is already a bit intimidating, doing a 10 man unit will be my first goal.

@1-i - I'm glad you like 1-i.

@Briancj - You can battle on my table whenever you'd like! Just let me know if you're ever in the greater Indianapolis area, lol.

There's a very good chance, Ice, that I will attend GC in 2012!

Did you get a chance to play the Artemis Spaceship Bridge simulator while you were there?

For the base of board do you mean what kind of wood or how did I get the overall snowy look?

I did not play the Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator. I did play a ton of games but it is so hard to get everything in, even in 4 days! GenCon is so fantastic. I am already excited about next year. I didn't really see any 40k events this year though and that was a bit disappointing. Not that I would have played because they take so freaking long, but I do always like to stop by and get ideas from other peoples work.

Side note: Any one have any good battle damage tutorials for models that are in black?

GW and GenCon have a long, acrimonious history. Thus, you will never see an official GW presence at Gencon.

oh yeah, i was fully aware of that, but in previous years there had always been local gaming groups running their own 40k tournaments. Last year I played in two of them, the year before that I was in one of them, but this year there weren't any to partake in. I was a bit disappointed by the 40k gamers of greater Indianapolis.

oh I almost forgot. I did manage a small amount of work today on my assault marines. I worked on some bases. I broke off some old bits I didn't like and replaced them with newer ones. This also gave me another 5 man unit that I can field without having to use them as honor guard. I also did some serious cleaning on a couple of my really old models. I didn't realize that some of these old models were actually old death company models. Any one remember the old pewter death company? My original death company had one of every weapon in it and all sorts of junk. I had auto pistols, hand flamers, las pistols, they were a royal pain to use but a lot of fun to put together. They were almost like a necromunda gang more then a 40k unit, lol.

I do remember some old DC models, but not the loadout you're talking about...
The old plastic, assault weapons sprue came with those indeed : autopistol, plasma pistol, hand flamer, laspistol, and... maybe one that I can't recall, but I had always thought it was a generic, Imperium sprue : my Space Wolves also came with those sprues, yet they couldn't equip the auto&las pistols, only hand flamers & plasma pistols !

Are you sure you didn't go overboard when you built them

oh yeah! In second edition you could equip death company members with just about any weapon you wanted outside of heavy weapons and if you recall in second edition units were already prefilled sizes, so a tactical unit was 300 points for 10 men plus gear etc. I think that's why I always went over the top with my absurd combinations. My reasoning was that they used up their ammunition already and are now picking up whatever weapon they find on the battlefield. They are crazy enraged psycho astartes, why not?!

Despite my lack of posts as of late I have continued to work on my assault marines. I have 21 one of them complete which leaves me with 23 assault marines left to do. Nearly half way. The above picture is the latest one that I've completed. I also managed to toss in a couple of orks just to spice things up a bit. I hope you like!

Very nice work Ice... really like the tin bits kind of shade on the jump pack. Excellent work on the scroll too.
