A new book has been written by Dick Swaab (no joke, this is the guys name) claiming that pregnant women who stress/take drugs/drink heavily will alter their babies developing brain and thus their baby will be born gay.

Women who suffer stress during pregnancy increase the chance of their child being gay, according to a controversial new book.

The lifestyle of pregnant mothers affects the sexuality of their unborn child, altering their hormones and the formation of their brains, it claims.

Smoking or taking drugs can also result in a child who grows up to be gay, according to the book by Dutch neuroscientist Dick Swaab, which is yet another chapter in the debate about the origins and causes of homosexuality.

Some homosexual people are blaming this guy as fear mongering and stating how being gay proves your mother was a bad mother while others are saying this is good as it proves you are born gay an it is not a choice like some people believe

The daily mail is a british newspaper that often spouts hatred towards certain minoritys in britain, an example being how "immigrants are ruining the country" and that "they are living in million pound mansions while the white native man is begging on the street and dying daily"

Just wondering what Dakkas thoughts were on this

Slaanesh: "Hey guys we're back! We brought presents. And yes, they ARE sexually suggestive"
Tzeentch: "So did we miss anything while we were away"
Khorne and Nurgle trade a shifty glance
Tzeentch: "Hey! Whos been touching my stuff! Where did my Old World go?!"
Khorne and Nurgle wander off whistling.

My thoughts? You're misrepresenting the DailyMail on this.

There are several other media outlets out there reporting about the book. Are they "claiming" it as well?

I'm not going to google the guys name at work but it would be interesting to see if he has any peer reviewed articles. Or failing that, It would be interesting to see his sources.

Though given how many people used to smoke and drink while pregnant and how stress is ever present, I am shocked there are not more gay people given the short extract above...

"By Dr. Dick Swaab" Lol

"Daily Mail" Lol

That is all.

Edit: Actually, one more thing:

"However, Dr Swaab recognised lifestyle factors were a small influence and added that genetics play the most important role in child development." A line curiously left out of the Daily Mail article, but of course, that's why the Daily Mail gets a LOL generally.

That also sounds about right for the daily mail. Taking things out of context to "prove" something

My thoughts?

1) I think it is important research. If it can be shown that homosexuality is (majority) physical rather than a psychological then it gives more leverage for demands for equality, and takes away claims about "corruption of young people" and that "Gay propaganda" makes people gay, or that you can stop being gay.

2) This doesn't sound much like the DM to me. Gay immigrants cause housing bubble sounds more like the DM.

I checked him out, he's a pretty well known neuroscientist. The only "controversy" he's sparked is in trying to find out what in the brain makes people homosexual. His H-Index is a 70, which I guess makes him rather special. *shrugs*

Its the taking it from "Prenatal stress may affect sexuality" to "Smoking and drinking mother makes you gay" that makes the difference with the Daily Mail...

I wouldn't say i was misrepresenting the daily mail on this, they are known in the country for not accurately representing data and statistical evidence, often skewing things to make it a "better" article. There are other media outlets reporting upon this yes, but those ones are not focusing the smoking or drinking aspect, they are focusing upon the stress the parent faces.

Had a look at the Professor and he has produced some good papers and had everything pier reviewed too so that vouches his reliability, I would like to see his reseaarch that was conducted on this though as it would be interesting

Your not? Your thread title says that the Daily Mail claims it. When in fact it is the book itself, as they clearly say in the story. So yes, you are misrepresenting them.

Well, like anything, the devil is in the detail - whether the science and research behind the story stands up to scrutiny. The medium in which the findings are reported are neither here nor there. The Daily Mail are wont to put their own spin on things as are any other national newspaper; they all have their own bias and agendas. This is why you need to read between the lines when digesting newspaper articles.

Then so is every other media source out there that is reporting on the story. Personally I find your line of thinking flawed. A media source does not need to support/claim/whatever something just because they are reporting on it.

Where's the statistical analysis from large sample data?

Doesn't really mention, means either the conclusion is speculative, or the data is flawed.

Also, he's released a book rather than a peer reviewed journal? Looks like an anecdotal money-spinner.

Ah, I see where you're coming from now, sorry , want to go back and change the title so instead of it saying claims it says "writes article on a book that claims" as you're evidently rather annoyed by my use of the english language?

honestly, none of Britains newspapers are high in quality or un-baised, they're all majorly influenced by politics and each represent a party which is why not many people take the articles as 100%, those that do are often fools.

Its more likely that the child will have 'learning difficulties'. I don't think alcohol consumption during pregnancy will cause noticable physical deformities.
