I was just thinking about how many games are ruined by the people that play them, other than league of legends, which most people know has a community that isn't very good. I know sometimes you meet good people, but I'm met by slightly more distasteful people when I play. I'm sure many people have faced this in a game that they really want to enjoy and just can't because of the other people.

My example is the battlegrounds 2 mod for half-life 2. For my story to make sense I'll need to give a background on the mod. It's a revolutionary war mod that actually has long reload times coupled with single shot guns and it's pretty tense and enjoyable. The most fun are the linebattle servers, where people actually line up and follow an admin as they lead the group, ordering when to fire and move and also when to skirmish or go in for the final charge with bayonets. It's really tense when the enemy fires at you from a distance as you reload, since being in a line makes you an easy target, and the feeling of surviving what's usually a 10 man firing line when the guy next to you bit the bullet is awesome.

I played a while ago and decided to pick it up again a few weeks ago. However, to my dismay there are only two servers I can find that are up on a good day and usually just one. I joined one of these line battle servers and started playing. Now I recently moved into an area with time warner cable, and that coupled with the rather low quality servers gave me a high ping. I clicked the mouse button on the fire command like everyone else, but it took a second or two longer due to the lag. This short delay made the admin at the back of the group who watches everyone shout at me, and I quote, "Inferno! What the hell is wrong with you, fire on the command like everyone else!" (He proceeded to slay me in the console almost immediately) He does this to anyone who slips up even a little, as I'd played on the server when I played it more frequently.

This guy and some others really ruin the game with this behavior, as newcomers can't feel welcome at all (probably explains the only one or two servers thing, as well as the small community) and even people who play frequently like I used to are treated like garbage. I didn't even bother trying to explain the ping issue to him as he likely would've kicked me from the server, like those kind of people tend to when I try to reason with them.

I don't know about ruined per se, but the DOTA 2 community is a little, erm, abrupt on occasion. It's not such a bad thing, but as its very much a team game and working together means getting results, if one or two of the five man team are a little off the boil, it can lead to some one sided games. And let's face it, ain't nobody likes to get spanked when they have played to their very best.
I've been cursed and virtually spat at before during the chat afterwards. But then I wasn't really at my best, and playing as a hard carry means you have to be at your best. So I deserved it on that occasion.

Really, the only game I can think of off-hand was the multiplayer for Red Dead Redemption. What usually happened was that someone who was higher level, with all the weapons unlocked, would hang around spawn areas and just murder all the lower level players. Since I never played the online a lot, that happened to me every time I played.

It was fun, but extremely frustrating, and I eventually stopped trying.

Guys playing games like they're MilSims.

I have no problem with guys organising themselves as a military-esque unit with a command structure and so on, but when they get super serious about it, that's when you get problems. When people forget its a game.

I've seen this happen with Space Marine. I used to a member of the Dark Angels. These days there's two groups of them, and neither are exactly paragons of virtue. In fact, they're both pretty much entirely made of (not nice people), run by (not nice people) that probably honestly believe they are Space Marines.

The Night Lords, on the other hand...

Edit: In case it wasn't clear, Space Marine. Only a few groups, but God do they make it unbearable. Calling out the Crimson Fists, Dern Angels, xDAx. Yeah, those guys.

The more you know.

I actually have that issue with airsoft in real life lol.

Bro, you're not in the military, and you're shooting plastic bb's at people. Take it down a notch.

I agree on Space Marines. The game being ruined by the community is not probably out of malice but when one team consists of an organised group of ''''''''''''''''''''pro'''''''''''''''''''' players and the other is just random people who wanted a nice match of Space Marine this evening the game quickly becomes unenjoyable to play.

I have noticed this primarily with 'Grey Knights' and some other group I can't remember the name of.

This is the reason I never bothered to even get a subscription to Legend of Mir.

Basically, it was free to get to level 7, then you needed a subscription to get any higher, you started out with a wooden sword, a few roast chickens and some health potions. but due to PvP, high level players would spawn-camp and level grind on new players

My play experience consisted of:
1. 'Welcome adventurer!' (level 1)
2. *get's insta-PK'ed by some level 40 guy with a sword of badassery*
3. go to 1.

Off the top of my head (without looking through my massive game library to try to stir up bad memories)...

World of Warcraft (and the 'craft series as a whole)
Combat Arms

Combat Arms
And also Combat Arms.

Surprisingly, NOT Call of Duty. It may be because I play on the PC, but CoD players tend not to be any worse than shooters in most other games, aside from a slightly higher prevalence for hackers.

Yeah, being on the receiving end is never fun, it wasn't great for us either. A few randoms against an organised team just don't provide a challenge (not to be patronising, but that's the way the game went down. A coordinated team vs a disparate group... never ends well, doesn't give us a proper challenge either, not until the meltaguns came out. Those matches were never great either :/ )

Bad news is that most of these groups are aiming at going over to Eternal Crusade. So, that'll be.... interesting. If the EC team can keep it balanced it'll be ok. However, I don't see this happening.

You know, I never had an issue with people in Space Marine. But, I also played on PS3. Different crowd, perhaps?

Last time i played any Call of Duty on a console I was shouted at for not using a sniper rifle on what must have been the smallest map in the game...

Pretty much any online multiplayer game, only games I didnt have issues with the community were Killzone 3, Bad Company 2, Medal of Honor (2010), and Battlefield 3 all on the PS3. Any other game I touched on PS3, XBOX 360 or PC all had too many annoying children or dickheads to find enjoyable.

Thats not to say that there weren't dickheads or annoying children on the games I listed, just that they were more limited... I think though, to this day, the worst offender for me was Halo 2.

I've never had a problem with Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. Everyone seems to work together and though there's the occasional person who would kill steal, that same person would heal you if you were down.

Any game that requiers interaction with other people to win, mainly MMO and most RTS games online, one always seems to end up with a horde of slobering oafs for team mates. A great exampel of this is CoH1 & 2, alongside DoW 2 + expansions

It does get a bit stupid when it is a melta/launcherfest.

Try to shoot them? Nope, Launcher'd.

Try to close in? Nope, melta'd.

It feels like every weapon in that game is either nooby or just bad.

And even then I have seen ASMs wreck face and getting most of their kills with pistols.

I have to say, Bolt Pistol headshot kills are some of the most satisfying. But it's a difficult game because of those weapons anyway. When you get whole teams whose strategy is to spam those weapons on Capture points games (seriously, 8 guys with melta/ rapid redeploy on Seize isn't a fun matchup.), then yeah. You get problems.

My brothers play it, and have never complained about the community. But they've got their own little group for it, and so don't have to mix as much with the rest of the community. I would imagine that helps quite a bit.

Well my quick experience was playing a normal online match with a buddy (unranked, or whatever its called) and being new, I was fairly bad. Not like paste-eating bad, but didn't get any of the game specific tactics/strategies.

I was reported for being bad. Never have I ever played a game where I was reported for being bad.

I played World of Tanks fairly seriously for a while, and I've never seen that level of absurdity that you can report someone for not playing well enough.

I never played again, because feth playing a game with people like that.
