Too bad Roland Emmerich is involved.

Big day for reboots. First it was Cliffhanger, and now MGM and Warner Bros. announced they are teaming with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to create a re-imagined trilogy based on the sci-fi hit Stargate, one of the biggest titles in the MGM library. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original 1994 film with Devlin, is on board to direct this one, with Devlin producing. Those two are already hard at work on a new version of Independence Day at Fox.

Related: Climb Toward ‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot Moving Forward; Joe Gazzam Set To Write

MGM’s Gary Barber called Emmerich and Devlin “world-class creators of the original Stargate,” and said they will “bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.”

Said Emmerich and Devlin: “The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.” MGM’s Jonathan Glickman will oversee it with Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman. Warners will distribute with MGM handling some international territories. Back in its day, Stargate set the record for highest October gross and did near $200 million in global ticket sales. It went on to have a very successful run as a syndicated TV series.

While I understand Emmerich was behind the original film, I don't think the movie was very good and Sir Emmerich hardly has the best track record with films. Still. Star Gate is Star Gate and it is a project Emmerich is surely passionate about. So maybe there's some hope XD

Could be good, I liked SG-1 but wasn't a fan of Atlantis or Universe. Any word if this is going to be entirely new or a reboot with the same characters ect?

More to the point, why the feth are they remaking Independence Day?

I really don't see the point,

It's hardly any time since it was on anyway, unless they do something very different with it which I don't expect

If it wasn't for the TV series, there wouldn't be any interest in this.

As ridiculous as it sounds, a third season of SGU would have been awesome, it was starting to mature in a good way as opposed to whatever the hell it was suppsoed to be in its first season (grimdark teen soap opera BSG sequel?).

Yeah. Honestly, I'd rather have a new TV series than a new movie. The struggle I think is what to do with the story at that point. Earth has defeated most of its enemies and is becoming a galactic power. There's some cool things that could be done with a series about the Star Gate becoming public, and the struggles of humanity coming to terms with its new role in the universe (kind of an inverse Star Trek?)

With the exception of Independence Day and The Patriot, I'm not too impressed with ANYTHING else in his body of work. Stargate, like Men in Black, is a movie that is SO awesome in the first forty-five minutes that you can ignore the second forty-five minutes stapled awkwardly to it's rear like a human centipede experiment gone wrong. The television show was pretty dope, though. Not terribly cerebral or anything, but good brain bubblegum.

I'll definitely give the first one a look. But the Underworld series finished what the Matrix trilogy started, and I'm no longer a completionist. If it sucks, I'll give up after one.

I liked the series better then the movies, and SGU was actually quite good, I was dissapointed when it got canceled.

I feel a real void for TV sci fi series right now... the only thing out there seems to be "the 100" which is pretty good, but doesnt really deal with space exploration which I miss.

I'm in the same boat. If I look up and to my left I see all 10 seasons of SG-1 on DVD, as well as both SG-1 movies and all five seasons of Atlantis. SG-1 is and always will be my fav television show of all time.

But at the same time, y'know, I'm kinda interested to see where they take it. Stargate is a big deal for MGM, being one of their longest running properties and it has bought them in scads of money, so they should do something with it. I'm generally against rebooting things, even if I understand the core arguments for remakes, but as a fan I'm intrigued.

They'd better not screw it up though.

Loved SG1 (apartf rom the crappy last episode and a few early ones)

Liked some of Atlantis anda few characters - disliked just as much......

Universe was just poor.

Interested to see what they do with it to retrieve it after Universe killed the franchise

Slightly off-topic, but what is The 100 and is it any good? We're getting it in the UK in the slot Agents of Shield has now vacated, as a fan of sci-fi, fantasy and adventure stuff, is it worth watching?

Check out Almost Human. Was recently canceled by Fox after having its first season aired out of order, but it's a really good show IMHO.

It's alright. Post apocalyptic future, humanity lives in a space station over of the unlivable surface. Space station is dieing, let's send 100 kid criminals down to earth to see just how unlivable it is. Teen drama ensues on the planet. Political drama ensues on space station.

Grate, all the SG-1 universe is about to be kicked in the teeth, shot in the stomach, dumped over a bridge while wraped up in an old rug and wearing quick dry cement shoes.

Its the whole Star Trek movie reboot again, it will not end well...

Hmm, might give it a couple of episodes, if the characters and writing is decent I'll stick with it, if not then it's no great loss.

I'm in the same boat. SG-1 is my favorite show of all time and I don't see it getting replaced anytime soon. Atlantis is in my top 10 and maybe top 5. I love the Stargate franchise but the movie was the lowest point for me out of all of it.

I think I'll be ok with a reboot (not like they can come steal my SG-1's and Atlantis DVD's) but man I hope they do it well.

Galactic power isn't really true, their ships are powerful but they only have 5 ships and there is a lack of will to build more because economy.
Also they lost the Antarctic Chair, so Earth is somewhat vulnerable to a massed attack.

Although the recent peace treaty with the Wraith will help.

They also managed to lose the Sun Tzu entirely off-screen, the SG teams can when needed to overwhelm forces on the ground but they really are outclassed in space fights despite having superior individual ships

Yeah, It seems the damage the Super Hive Ship caused was deemed to great to be repaired.
So they only have 4 ships left. How many does the Lucian Alliance has?

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Eh, that's that franchise dead for me then. I've read a few interviews done with the creators of the movie that discuss their opinion of the shows and made some vague mentions of what direction they wanted to take the films in if they'd had the chance, and I'm beyond glad they never got the opportunity to try until after we'd already got SG-1 and Atlantis.

The film wasn't terribad, I'd rank it along with the first season of Universe - watchable enough at the time, but rarely something I get the urge to watch again. SG-1 and Atlantis were both amazing shows, I tend to favour Atlantis on balance because it had McKay and lost a lot of the "yo militaries are totez awsum brah!" mutual masturbation SG-1 had going on with the US Airforce, which was a bit offputting in those episodes where Jack was joining in rather than sarcastically taking the piss. It still annoys me a little that the studio dumped Atlantis and shoehorned in that awful finale episode, only to turn around and essentially remake Atlantis, only on a space ship, devoid of the sense of fun, the action, or the pacing, and with less lighting rigs. The second season of Universe was just starting to regain some of the Stargate mojo when they cancelled that as well.

I suppose this is how you know you're getting old in this modern world of ours, when out-of-ideas hasbeens and corporate scumbags begin to wholesale plunder all the things you enjoyed when you were young. Star Wars(no, I don't mean the prequels, they were pretty awful, but I suspect we'll look back on them fondly after JJ "talentless hack-a-tron 5000 now with added lensflare" Abrams gets done with it), Star Trek, now Stargate; once they remake and ruin Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Farscape that'll be my entire childhood and teens done for.

SG-1 used to be on Channel 4 for a while.

But yeah, Sky-One has kept a pretty darn firm grip on SG-1 and Atlantis, 310 episodes (I think?) does a great job at schedule filling before the Simpsons, another great schedule filler, comes on.
