Ah! No I wasn't. I don't tend to keep up with message board politics! Thanks for enlightening me!

I personally haven't played the game, (Haven't seen the LOTR Rules, but since LOTR Conquest comes out soon, i've been excited to build a Minas Tirith army, and a Mordor army)

Still, the game looks very fun, and I personally hope that it doesn't die. Then what do I do for that skirmish game? 450 point WFB Warbands? (not that LOTR is that small, but you know what I mean, WFB and 40k aren't the best skirmish games)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

A 500 point LoTR army is about medium sized (say 1000 -1500 for 40K)
so it is a LOT cheaper to get into .
Its funny, some stores no one seem to play it.
My local GW has a very strong LoTR base. It's a different style of rules and a LOT more tactical than 40K or Warhammer.
It's a good system, and nice to mix in with my other armies in 40K and Warhammer.

Who are all these people, and why aren't they dead?

The new rule set comeing out later this year will help speed things along, and allow much bigger games!!

I tend to buy LOTR plastics for D&D and other fantasy skrimish games.

24 plastics in good poses with normal sized heads and weapons with 8 bows, 8 hand weapon and shield and 8 two handed weapons for $20-$25 is a hard bargain to ignore.

I have Moria Goblins and Uruk Hai scouts(now hobgoblins) and plan to get more sets. I'll probably get nearly one of each set. (morranon orcs, mordor orcs, umbar corsairs, rangers of middle earth, soldiers of harad, darven rangers, soldiers of rohan, elves of rivendell, dwarven warriors, soldiers of gondor, easterling soldiers.)

I'm the same- you really can't beat the range for nice, realistically proportioned fantasy miniatures.
The large beasties are nice too- the balrog is a very nice miniature for the price.

I also enjoy the skirmish game though, a lot.

Given the massive interest in WotR I think its safe to say that there is plenty of life left in this game.

Jesus, I keep hearing about the "tremendous" following this game has, but I have never even seen anyone at my store play. Not like I need another system.

In my area there are about 4 deticated players that i know of, in including me. Maybe with the new rule set i can convince others to join in on the fun!!

How big of a following does D&D or Vampire have?

How many games of these do you see at your FLGS?

Right.

LotR is the same way, mostly because the bulk of 40k / WFB players heap scorn on them and they're socially savvy enough not to stay where they're unwanted.

Based on the last two Adepticons, about 75% of LotR players do not play 40k or WFB.

I'm going to go in search of LOTR groups in the next month or two, and I shall report back.

QFT.

If you move in GW circles, chances are you know none or very few historical waramers. Does this means no one plays Napoleonics?

Dakka, being primarily WFB and 40K based, of course doesn't have much LotR. But why would it when to only forum for it is "Other fantasy Games". Check out Last-Alliance, One-Ring or Palantir on the other hand and you will find thriving communities.

Its also my experience that if you check out historical wargaming communities you will find allot of respect for the LotR system. Its generally considered to be Gw's best set of Wargaming rules (along with Warmaster),s well as having the best miniatures. Historical gamers have very little time for 'Heroic' scale which they generally view as cartoonish.

Just becuase they dont move in the same circles as you, don't assume they don't exist.

I guess i must be a unique breed according to the above text. I play LOTR, WFB, 40K, Warmachine, and finally FoW. Although the above statement is true my FoW players dont play any of the other systems and all the 40k and WFB players dont play FoW or Lotr, unless i bring my armies with me.

nieto666: I'm not far off you, swap FOW for D'n'D minis and we're exactly the same.

Same here, man. take out FOW and swap Warmachine for Hordes.

He, he, back on topic.

I remember a conversation at my FLGS about LOTR. Went something like this

Guy 1: You know, you don't see many LOTR players around here

Manager: Yeah, I know

Guy 1: It's like, "wanna go play LOTR?" and seventy people look at you like your crazy

Manager: I noticed that, acutally. I was thinking about holding an LOTR event.

Guy 1: good luck getting that to happen.

Both start laughing.

it's kinda sad, but still, I love LOTR. But not like, love love. Only love.

Not unique but certainly rare! At least in my experience anyway.

I myself play WFB, LotR, Flames of War, Warmaster, a couple of Historical systems (Big Napoleonic's Fan, if only we could find a rules set my club all agreed on!) and I'm known to dabble in RPG's and 40K but to a much lesser extent.

Played a Demo of WOTR yesterday. If you are familiar with 40k or Fantasy then you can jump in pretty easily. The lack of army saves speeds the game up. Movement is fairly straight forward, combat is largely affected by the formation systems. Shooting en-masse is necessary, but effective.

I played an Orc Shaman and he managed to wipe out his own unit, but he also killed just as many enemy models.

Characters are a must and the way that you play with them in the companys makes them rock hard.

Since priority affects who goes first each turn the game is a little more random and exciting.

Overall the game looks good . The book is huge and encompasses every army and character. I already have a lot of LOTR minis and through a few trades I feel that we establish a good base of players. I hope that you all at least give it a shot.
