Ronald Macragge, for sure. He was released within a couple of months of Rogue Trader. Leman Russ was late 1st edition (Jes Goodwin's drawing was in the Yellow Book), when the Space Wolves got their Viking face-lift. The daemon primarchs for Epic were probably a bit later than that.

As far as the Crimson Fists go, I say it's about time they made a Pedro Cantor model!

This is almost as good as watching WoW meets South Park!

Of course the most badarse character in 40k would have to mforking miffs. Double bitchslaps?

Wasn't the first Marine character actually the Ultramarine's Primarch, Guilliman?
Also, the Mentors would also be an interesting chapter to revisit.

What do you think his oversized hands are for? Very loud sign language.

Who needs to take time with the painstaking process of writing stuff down when you have massive hands that can speak to a nation in a fraction of the time!!!

The model was simply called 'Lord Macragge'. Now, given that the Ultra-Marines (as they were called) were Successor Chapter back in the day, and how originally there was no Horus Heresy, I think it's safe to say that quite a bit has been retconned. As 'Lord Macragge' was never named as either Calgar of Guilliman, they can say whatever they want about who he was. I'm happy to stick to the story that it's always been Calgar, and that my Half Brother was and always will be 40K's first special character.

I thought I read in WD back when the Armageddon codex came out that the first 41st Millennium special characters were Yarrick & Ghazghkull (or however it's spelled) and that they started over in Epic and transplanted over to 40K later.

And in at least the 2nd Ed Codex Ultras, Calgar was listed as being "Lord Macragge"

The original miniature was called "Lord Macragge;" it was clearly based on the (awesome) painting from WD97 (reprinted in the Red Book) which was captioned "Imperial Commander Marneus Calgar, Lord Macragge" or somesuch. The same White Dwarf article (the very first Index Astartes article) included background and stats for Calgar (along with many other Ultra-Marines officers).

Yarrick and Ghazkull came years later, no matter what some article says.

So, was he the actual first Special Character?

Any idea who the other characters were, or what Pimp Master Calgar's rules were?

I'm pretty sure I ditched my WD stash years ago, although it might still be boxed somewhere. But yes, Calgar or 'Lord Macragge' was unveiled in WD97 as Ultramarines were the first chapter to receive the Index Astartes treatment in WD. The term special character didn't exist then, but in essence, yes he was the first.

I don't think he had much in the way of special rules, having two power fists was considered pretty impressive enough at that time. Mainly because codex creep* had yet to be invented.

* Of course, only because codices hadn't come out yet either. WD105 had a complete army list for all Space Marine chapters, ever.

"Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Slayer of worlds! Felt the power throb in his weapon. He clutched it tightly in his hand and turned towards his foe letting it build in the twin energy spheres and then finally! RELEASE! Calgar also had a back story where he was the last surviving member of a tyranid attack. Apparently he was so badly cut up that they replaced his arms and legs with bionics. With my favorite qute "He's more machine now than man" the article explained how Calgar is pretty much useless in a strait up fight but still goes onto the battlefield to give his guideance to his fellow Ultra-Marines.

"Calgar hates Tyranids." I think that'll be my .sig for a while...

Captain) Keorn Asata (oh, those Rogue Trader names!), Master of the Household Fimor Dour, Master of Sanctity Tow Takka-chow, and (human) Reclusiarch Leo Caberra.

It's a requirement on 40K entrance exams to choose a hate for either group, both preferably if you ask the Emperor.

We should start a pool on what Logan ends up looking like. I'm betting a rerollable invulnerable save and a daemon weapon (the Fang of Morkai is one, isn't it?) and each unsaved wound causes D6 wounds. I mean, inflicting Instant Death is passe these days...

HEH HEH HEH....this would be light for the Imperium's Greatest Warrior!

I'm Thinking the Axe Morkai acts like a ThunderHammer that goes at init 8 and confers +4 attacks and a 2+ invulnerable save.

I say nay to you sir, because that was quite broken the first time around. But it would probably fit in just fit in well with the new space marine stuff now so why not.

Not while Abaddon possesses the mighty BiC-Drach'nyen!

The ink from BiC-Drach'nyen is so powerful that it allows Abaddon to wield the political powers of Chaos like no other. The pen is so powerful that it never runs out of ink, for BiC-Drach'nyen cares not where the ink comes from, only that it flows freely onto the ever changing parchments of Chaos!

Eternal Warrior. AP2 Storm Bolter. A Power Klaw that swings at Initative. +D6 attacks from his Bale Eye. 3+ Invul Save due to his energy shield. WS5 BS5 W4. He'll be in every Guard army, all the time, across the galaxy, simultaneously.

Honestly, for Yarrick, T4 will do. The current Yarrick is Yarrick-Lite.
