No good reason, just the RoB board is a really gakky product. I wonder if it's going up in price come June. LOL!
I'm intrigued.
Why do you say it's a "gakky" product?
I game on one regularly with my group, and I think it's an excellent product.
Expensive? Yes... but that doesn't make for a bad product... only a bad PRICE.

Crap! Here I am trying to save money to buy a house and GW releases more terrain (and I'm with HBMC in that the single best thing GW does is terrain)!
Damn you GW, you don't want me to own my own home!

Well with the number of Cityfight tiles I have I could probably make a small hut to sleep in when the wife kicks me out...

Anyone else find it odd that the release date is July 4th. Most shops in the US are closed that day for the holiday. Is this just because they always release on sat and this was where the day happened to fall?

All of the terrain pieces are most welcome. I like the idea of the RoB board but not the actual pieces so seeing some new sections could make that more interesting.
The Defense Line has a quad mounted something. Too bad they didn't make it the Hydra so you could take it and also mount in on a Chimera.
The Landing Pad will make a nice objective and will make a really nice display stand for the Valkyrie when you are not playing.
The Bastion is slightly less interesting but I bet you'll be able to build it in different ways so it probably will be a good kit to have.
I think the past year has been GW's best in a looong time. It's too bad that price hikes keep forcing folks out of the hobby.

Man... I gotta start saving now. I was thinking I might expand my RoB board to be 3x4 tiles for giant Apoc games, and now with all this terrain, how can I refuse? Especially if there are city themed tiles, hopefully with streets that are not paved with English faces (or skulls).

Defense line has a quad mounted autocannon. You can just make out the ammo drums on the side facing the camera on the box.
It looks more like it's the Anphelion Project styled auto turrets that were mounted on the lab roofs.

If I had to guess?
I'd put the Bastion and the Defense Line at the same pricepoint as a Land Raider or Chimera. The Landing Pad at the price point of a Baneblade, Cathedral at that same pricepoint.

GW scenery kits are rather reasonably priced, I would halve that.

Oh God no, that's just my wild speculation. I'm comparing them to existing GW terrain kits rather than to Land Raiders or Baneblades or whatever. Makes more sense to me.
And if the Landing Pad is priced like a Baneblade, I'll be skipping it. It's not that great a model, seems to have no stairs or ladder up to it (just a circle on legs really), and just isn't worth the cost of a Baneblade, especially if the massive Dark Angel Aquila Fortress Cathedral thingy is the same cost, 'cause that thing is total awesomesauce.

Well I didn't use the word 'gakky', that's for sure. The enforced polite filter made me say that.
But to answer your question, it's actually less about price and more about personal preference. I hate what I call 'Moulded Boards', that is to say boards with the details moulded onto them. The GWOZ City store had this great canyon board that looked amazing, but there wasn't a single square inch of flat surface. Dice fell into cracks, landed on their sides, models couldn't always stand up straight, and generally you had a board that look fantastic but was utterly useless for a game. The other problem with that board is that that was all it could do. It was a canyon and could never stop being a canyon. It would always be a canyon.
I love terrain and GW terrain in particular. I'm a GW terrain junkie and I still have hundreds of dollars of unbuilt CoD stuff waiting to be finished, each building I make getting bigger and more elaborate each time. I have 5 sets of Necromunda terrain. I've bought everything they've made and am saving up for two GW Hills and two Modular Hills because I think they're great. I will buy this Planetstrike stuff like a crack-starved addict, but I won't buy the Realm of Battle because it is a moulded board - the hills will always be there, and while there maybe a whopping 6 or so configs, it's still the same hill, with the same approaches, levels and so on. As someone who is into 40K for the aesthetics and the narrative scope (rather than, the rules), boards like the RoB board go against what I do. Whenever we hold an event I'm always asked to do the terrain, and I love doing themed terrain. The last board was a hastily constructed ring of bunkers surrounding an ancient shrine. The time before that was the aftermath of a battle at an Imperial Defensive line, with shattered bunkers, craters, and destroyed tanks (including 2 Baneblades) everywhere. City scapes. Rolling hills. Defensive actions, supply depots - you name it, I've done it.
But I can't do any of that with a board that always has the hills in the same spot, that always has a pit of skulls in the same spot. I need to be able to justify things in the fluff for my boards - I want there to be a reason for the terrain to be there, not just random - and I don't want to have to justify a skull-pit in every game.
Now I'm sure the board itself, as a product, has its uses for some people. I don't feel its necessary, as at a cool AUD$400 I could buy a cheap piece of MDF (like I have) and spend the remaining $300+ on an order to Maelstrom and get loads of CoD stuff and extra terrain. And I'd have a better table for it that wouldn't always have the same pits, the same hills, and an uneven surface which is bad for dice rolling (I like perfectly flat non-scenic surfaces).
As I said, this is personal preference, so I'm no more 'right' than I am 'wrong', I just hate the RoB board because it limits what you can do with a game from both a practical and a narrative perspective (in my opinion) and is insanely overpriced even by GW standards.
Ozymandias wrote:Crap! Here I am trying to save money to buy a house and GW releases more terrain (and I'm with HBMC in that the single best thing GW does is terrain)!
I just bought an apartment, so I can't buy these yet either. No fair GW!

Probably not I'd say.
The really cool one though was this 8X4 industrial complex. The whole board was the industrial complex, with ramps and buildings and bridges and all sorts of things. Again, I don't think playing on it would have been the most practical thing in the world, but it did look cool.
[EDIT]: Oh, wait, you mean the boards I've made? No, not really. Only a few from our massive 3 day weekend Apoc game from the start of '07 (they're in my gallery, but they mostly show models, not terrain). And I use the word 'board' loosely. It's always the same table, or one of the two tables I have, just I try to use the terrain I own in the best way possible.
